Acer Nitro 5 2022 15.6" QHD 165hz Laptop with i7-12700H, 16GB RAM, RTX 3060 140w, 512GB SSD $1599 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Scorptec

570

Thanks for @RogueWolf for the heads up on this deal.

The 2022 Nitro 5 fixes all of the issues that were present in the previous gen. Comes with a max powered 140w 3060 mobile with the mux switch that everyone loves, very decent cooling solution for the specs that its packing as well. The 12700H is better all round than any 6000 series rembrandt chips, with the exception of battery life, igpu and of course performance on battery/low wattages. Combine that with the small 3 cell 57wh battery, this means its basically packing a UPS and you shouldn't treat it anymore than that.

The machine is not particularly lacking in other areas neither, you get a decent-I would assume 100% srgb-QHD 165hz panel, along with a plethora of ports including a thunderbolt 4 port and HDMI 2.1. 2 SSD slots and a 2.5' inch drive bay for those that still prefers a sata drive-the downside is of course the small battery as previously mentioned.

The only and the major issue here is the single 16gb sodimm, so you need another ~70$ purchase to make it dual channel. With that said, a 12700H plus full powered 3060 & mux switch at this price is still unrivalled in the immediate future. As 40 gen laptop pricing looks worse than desktop cards-and remember those prices are US ones, so you need to factor in addition anz tax on top of conversion- we likely aren't going to see any decent 4060 laptop at the 2k AUD mark anytime soon.

Also available at centrecom. Jarrod's tech's review here, note his sku comes with a shoddy 144hz screen and dual 2*8gb ram, I say this config here is better as ram is easily upgradable, not so much the screen.

Not saying thats not a good price-ive also upvoted on that deal. But there's quite the performance differences here, not to mention that deal is long gone:

      • 12700H have quite the performance overhead over a 5800H, both single & multicore wise, and 50% larger l3 cache

      • a lower powered 3060 without mux switch vs the opposite, full powered variant with mux switch

      • both are budget rigs, but victus have a very bad and noticable screen wobble when typing - see this review

      • a QHD 165hz screen versus a 1080p 144hz one is also a big upgrade in itself.

  • This is a good buy and you'll be gaming solidly, I went a different way OP 2mins after you posted this, more runtime, smaller and lighter (from the red corner) being the attraction. I'll game just not as good as this Nitro.

edit: dual channel won't affect it much (gaming wise) so it really doesn't matter adding another sodimm, unless you need more ram for your use case

      What did you pick up?

      • +1

A new Asus ROG Flow X13 GV301RA $1500 (ebay harris technology store)

13.4" WUXGA (1920x1200) 120Hz IPS-level touchscreen with an included stylus
        Ryzen 7 6800HS with 680M gfx
        16GB (2x 8GB) 4600Mhz LPDDR5 Memory
        512GB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage
        Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.2
        2Yr warranty

It has been above $2K for some time, and I've been watching all items since Nov and the best I could get was $1800, HT and mobilecity haven't been participating in any deal codes, just today HT dropped it to $1500. So I jumped at it.

        • Thanks for sharing, I'll check it out. Looks like you got the last one! What made you pick this one?

          • +2

@chrisandrew: sorry just realised the typo mistake, the ram is DDR5 6400 not 4600.

Yean the first one sold early'ish 2022 and the last one I had my eye on since November but even at $1800 it was overpriced (imo) with only integrated GFX, it is a 6000 series though, and they're thin on the ground. I would have liked the 6800U but this is fine. I was watching all 6000 series laptops at one stage, so I had a feel for the pricing.

The other backup was the HP Elitebook 845 G9, but the dull screen didn't excite me and it hasn't got any gaming cred, it's a business laptop after all. Ebays 20% off had it and others down to $1600. Mobileciti has just dropped theirs to $1599 from $1800, like HT they don't participate in eBay deals. My budget was $2K, and I hoped a deal was coming considering it's withing Nov-Jan festive season. Besides that Kracken there haven't been bugger all decent deals. I see their revision summary for Mobileciti have a change of 'relisting fee' but that's BS it's a price change, nice to know that exists.

I've been up and down the scales small 11.6", large 17.2", business and gaming, over my laptop ownership history and small light portable is my thing currently. I'm retiring my 12.5" Toshiba Protege Z20t-b laptop with Linux mint on it for this X13 so more grunt in cpu and gpu is welcomed. I had MSI Katana, Asus TUF and aboves 2022 Acer Nitro on the heavyweight list. It was simply the price drop that secured the deal.

            Attractions (aside from $1500):
            13" size
Ryzen 6800HS (HS variant offers a 10 W reduced TDP and a lower sustained performance than the H version, which I'm fine with)
2in1 with pen (just like the Protege)
            Runtime (to be disclosed)
XG Mobile is nice but I'm not interested in purchasing one. 680M is fine for my needs

I can still play some games, but runtime is up there, if I didn't care so much about it, I'd have gone to a gaming laptop. I'm just not that into it as much as I was.

            • +1

@Sheep Whisperer: Good info, thanks. It looks like a great laptop, albeit a bit niche, but real world reviews are a bit off-putting.

            • +1

              @Sheep Whisperer: I too got a x13 with 3050 recently for $1900.
Won't be playing any intensive, but occasion online games like dota will run just fine. I enjoy the fact that its actually portable at around 1.5kg.

Just be aware of the sleep mode problem, it's real annoying until you disable it

              • @deneb: thanks for the tip, I'll look into it. I want to install Linux mint on it at some stage and have found a group that's making it possible. If not then I don't mind Win11. Will be nice to do some esport games too. Keen to see what kind of runtime I'll get on the 6800HS doing the light stuff. I too love the portability of it and will enjoy 1.5kg, always have from my last two ultraportable laptops. Quite excited. I'm not sure if I should just get a 1tb ssd or wait till it's needed, if needed.

    • I'm the same, my daily driver is the win max 2 with a 680m igpu. To me, that's more than enough, and I often only use it at 11 watt tdp anyways to maximise battery life.

I never really use any of my other devices anymore. It's just more convenient.

      • wow, you actually have one, that is very cool. Would love to hear about it in the forums.

I did go through those eccentric gaming devices, to see if they'd fit the brief, and at one stage the Ayaneo Geek and the Onexplayer2 were on my list, I just wasn't sure it'd cut it as my on the move PC. That with pricing, too new and the risk of quality, support, they're quite expensive.

        10/10 for coolness though.

        • +1

Take a look at the upcoming ayo neo air plus. It's finally being marketed now, and should be available in March. It's a smaller device (6 inch screen), and will cost 400AUD, so it's cheap enough to consider, and will come with entry mencidino chip, which is battery efficient for indie games and gta 5 era AAA, or the i3-1215u, which is just enough for horizon zero dawn.

Of course, if steam deck ever do arrive in Australia officially, it's the better choice.

Feel free to ask any questions. I only ever really get to talk about it in the retro handheld discord lol. It's still cool enough to me to want to talk about it lol.

x16 single channel vs x8 dual channel, only about 25% increase in FPS according to JarrodsTech reviews.
So yes there is big difference.

      • my mistake, I thought this had DDR5, dual channel doesn't matter as much.

  • FYI, It was 1499 last month. The fan is really loud. And it does come with 2 PCIE NVME slot

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up! Should have posted by then, didnt do my homework enough :)

As for fans thats really a gaming laptop problem in general-they all run in the range of 53-55 db on performance profiles. And yes as per review there are two m.2 slot, just be noted the second slot have trouble fitting in a double sided ssd but the one that stock drive takes in have no clearance issues.

  • +1

Nice! They added Thunderbolt for multi monitor goodness!

Nitro's are always fantastic bang for buck laptops.

    • If something goes wrong, their support is not as good as Asus or MSI.

        • +1

Goodluck with that. Still dealing with harvey norman dicking me around after 2 Nitro 5's overheated like crazy.

Acer admit the entire nitro 5 range have overheating issues that aren't fixable and come down to luck as they dont know how to fix them.

Harvey norman want to handball it to acer, acer stop replying to you and ignore you.

          S*** customer service all directions

          • @typhoonadventure: Had the same experience.
HN held my laptop for a week. I had to keep following up and by the time I went to pick it up, he said the overheating problems had been fixed as he "updated the laptop".
Ended up selling it on fb marketplace.

If Acer have fixed the overheating issues then this laptop sounds like a good grab. Just don't get it from HN.

          • @typhoonadventure: Yeah. You have to be assertive with them. Ask for manager when the floor staff aren't budging.

Unfortunately you have to know the process. If you really want to get them you can get them fined by escalating to ACCC

            https://youtu.be/uE8BB-ioNRw

    • Old Nitro 5's have Thunderbolt. Well, my 2021 model does. With 11th gen i7.

  • Have been looking for a laptop and have been surprised that so many of them with 30x0 graphic cards in different configs (ryzen 7/ i7) and different models Dell g15, Asus rog , Asus tuf etc. come with only ~56wh batteries ! :-(

  • +1

Very decent specs though I still hold reserved opinion of the Nitro 5 lineup as I bought the 2021 variants and it heats up like hell.

140W RTX3060 is a really solid one but wished they could bump it to 3070 and bump down the RAM specs (2*8GB or a single 8GB would also make sense as you can usually find a good 8GB for sub $30 and 16GB for $60 easy). Or even downgrade the i7 with an i5 as the performance gain is not too huge: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-12700-vs….

Best value for money was still that Kraken laptop from last year but this is also really solid.

    • +2

Can confirm it was a kraken deal - that i7 smashes my desktop by a long shot and is about the same in gaming performance as a desktop from 2020.

  • +1

What was the issues in previous nitro 5 gens?

    • +1

      Keyboard was crap.

    • +1

Overheating randomly, running like a jet engine when it felt like it. Not handling heavy loads (for a gaming laptop? lol) and my favorite, the random crashes.

  • Phwoar, killer. I bloody love my $900 i5/3060/nitro from last year, this would be brilliant for not much more dollarbucks

    • +2

You'd consider $700 and a whole year later for similar specs not much more? The 1k 3060 Nitro deals were much better $ per frame than this config is likely to deliver.

  • Honestly curious, is the 12700h version worth $300 more than the 12500h version?
    https://www.centrecom.com.au/acer-nitro-5-156-fhd-i5-12500h-…

From what I can tell, the only changes between those is the CPU (12700h vs 12500h), Screen size (1440p vs 1080p), and RAM (16GB vs 8GB) though RAM is more easily upgradable.

    • $300 questionable. But when it was only $200 certainly worth it.

    • +1

By itself, not really no. But considering the screen upgrade its worth it. These 144hz panels on acer have really bad colour reproduction in the range of 45% ntsc/62.5% srgb.

  • +1

What are people’s thoughts on the Gigabyte G7 i5-12500 3060 laptop? I’ve been close to pulling the trigger on this one. Not sure if I should get the Gigsbyte or spend and extra $100 and get the Nitro 5.

    https://www.centrecom.com.au/gigabyte-g7-ke-173-fhd-i5-12500…

    • -1

Acer nitro 5's are known for overheating.

      • -1

Please check the review I linked in the post body mate. These new nitro 5s have very good thermals for the specs they packs. On the other hand, these non-aorus gigabyte models arent gigabyte's own designs, but old Clevo (Metabox being their main oz reseller) chasis from a few years back and only will give you worse thermals. That's not to mention you lose out on the screen and cpu here.

        • I'm going off what what acer told me which makes me question why they're not doing a recall.

I asked them outright after they admitted my 2021 nitro kept overheating.

Had it replaced with a 2022 nitro as a "gesture of goodwill", where it kept overheating.

Before warranty was up outright told them I was done I wanted a refund where they tried to fob me off and offered to have it sent away AGAIN.

They told me they'd offer a repair or trade for another model, I asked if the replacement model would suffer from any known overheating issues.

Explanation I got out of them in november was stating that they had known issues with overheating in all current and recent Nitro 5's and that there were multiple possible points of origin causing the issues which they have not been able to isolate.

          Which is just disturbing.

Asked for a refund and got told to go back to harveys….. harveys to acer and its been ages.

          • @typhoonadventure: Sorry to hear that mate, I agree that 2021 model was bad unsalvagable. But I am not sure whats the issue with your replacement 2022 machine, I would say the problem more lies with acer australia's CS being imcompetent asses more than the actual design of the machine. Jarrod stress tested the machine and it ran just fine - the temps are actually better than my higher end rigs out of box.

Im not saying that I think you are lying or your experiences wont be replicated by another user, but I am pretty confident it only occurs to a small subset of users, much like all models from other brands, just that in this case the CS doesnt seem to know what they are talking about. With bad thermals on new machines its almost always a case of badly applied thermal paste out of the production line and easily fixed with a proper repaste.

            • @Brrrrt: from what we can figure out from their statements, they have zero quality control or care and it comes down to dumb luck what works and what doesn't.

              • @typhoonadventure: Are you certain acer did actually replace your nitro with a 2022 model, or just say they did?

                • @Sinnerator: The 2022 version still has overheating issues despite what some people here are claiming

                  • +1

@MuddyClear: That's good to know. Wouldn't surprise me if Acer delberately sent thei reviewers like Jarrod a 'quality controlled' model so they get good reviews, assuming he didn't buy his from a store.

  • -8

12700H and 140w 3060 will require really good cooling design to run smoothly. Previous gen cooling was enough for the i5 configs and some people found the i7's would throttle.
Also would need to confirm if they've specced an appropriate power supply and management for the new laptops.

    • +1

new Nitro is nowhere near old one, lol. reviews have been out for a month or two now, it handles 140w 3060 just fine (~10c under throttle point in stock or Performance mode) with the caveat that cpu power budget is around 25w when gpu is maxed out. that's shown to not matter much at 1440p, but more so at 1080p.

it's in the same calibre as rembrandt machines and a good performance uplift over 11th gen + RTX nitro, without the 90+c CPU thermals

      • The 2020 and 2021 models had reasonable reviews as well that did not cover the many hardly normal issues that many of us experienced in the last few years if nitro deals. Harvey Norman even admitted when I returned mine that they’d had many returns for the nitro models in 2022

    • Please see the review I attached in the post description. The thermals are more than fine on the 2022 sku.

      • The 2020 and 2021 models had reasonable reviews as well that did not cover the many hardly normal issues that many of us experienced in the last few years if nitro deals. Harvey Norman even admitted when I returned mine that they’d had many returns for the nitro models in 2022

  • Bit of a noob here. What's the best 16GB RAM card I should buy for the second slot on this laptop?

  • Would it run well with Adobe Lightroom classic with a large catalog like 50k+ photos?
I found my Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio with 16GB and a 3050 Ti runs very sluggish.

    • Yeah, though I'm not sure the screen is the best for image processing.

    • Yes, especially if you get the extra ram upgrade as I mentioned. Thin n lights like the Surface will have problems sustaining the performing in long duration workloads.

  • Really dumb question. Is it possible to do triple (1080p) monitor gaming (Assetto Corsa Competizione) using TB4 port?

    • I believe so.

It's the refresh rates that come down with more monitors from memory

    • +1

Hi mate, TB4 only have two DP channels, which means if you want to run all three monitors off the TB4 port alone, you need at least two of the monitors supporting DP daisy chaining with a hub that supports MST. Or you can run two screens off a TB hub and have the main screen running off the HDMI.

      • Thank you, so 2 DP off TB4 and 1 HDMI - I think that should work.

  • Just letting you know the 12900h nitro 2022 from Harvey Norman advertised with DDR4 ram ended up being DDR5 ram.

Its shown as 4800mhz ram in resource manager

    CPU-Z say its DDR5 ram.

So i guess it must be DDR5 ram.

DDR5 ram doesn't need to dual channel for best performance. So I can sit on 16gb 4800mhz ram for a few years then upgrade to 2 set of ~6000mhz later on.

Maybe they used DDR5 ram on for the fastest CPU of the the Nitro 2022? or only the i7s?

    • Can confirm via the Acer support site that the i9-12900H sku has the DDR5 RAM while the 12700H sku has the DDR4 RAM.

Side note; the 144HZ 1080p display on the 12900h based model has G-SYNC while the 12700H sku has the 165hz QHD panel but without official G-SYNC.

  • How does this compare against the BPC Kraken NUC 3060 latops? This may have a tiny bit more grunt but the kraken would be better build quality correct?

    • Yes, although 12700h is more than a tiny bit more grunt compared to 11800h, thats if the power limit is high enough. Kraken also has much bigger battery and is way lighter, depends what you're after. Kraken is completely sold out anyways.

  • Whats the difference between this and
    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/laptops-&-notebooks/gami…

    Both 3060

    • Processer is way more powerful (and power hungry) and nicer display,

      • so amazing value for 300$ less?

        • +1

Yes, if you're only/mainly using it for gaming/non portable work. Gigabyte is a chonky Boi. I personally would prefer the nitro, but for fps/$ gigabyte wins.

          • @zachhambo: Nicer display? QHD 165Hz (potentially but unconfirmed 100% sRGB) vs FHD 144Hz and unknown colour gamut?

            And 12700H >> 5600H

Unless what you meant was they're both better on the Nitro.

I like how the Gigabyte can do 1+3 displays (laptop screen + 3 external via HDMI/USB C DP but ofc not TB4/mini DP) though. And 130w 3060 is just under full power too. So yeah agree that the Gigabyte is quite good value at $1249. Deserves its own post imo.

            • +1

@CVonC: Oops Sorry I was referring to the nitro as better. Although the review of the gigabyte shows full srgb which is surprising. For the people that don't know, a full power 12700h is stupidly (50%) more powerful than 6800h chips and 11th gen…at 120w, although gaming it's too overkill to make much of a difference.

  • Still no Thunderbolt port?
Last gen couldn't do display-out via Type-C port

    • Hi mate, please refer to the specifications at the bottom of the post - there is indeed a Tb4 port on this sku.

    • Last gen couldn't do display-out via Type-C port

Not true. It just depended on which SKU you got.

    • +1

Ah yeah I saw that earlier on ebay as well, but a mux less 100w 3070 isnt really that ideal for the price - please refer to this review. I would recommend you go for this over that one mate.

      • +2

not buying it, just put here incase it's any good,my computer knowledge is really 0 lol

        • +1

Ah gotcha :) And yeah these acer ones (and 2021 tufs, and low end msi's) are known to be noob traps where its seemly a good spec for less than competitors but due to other factors they really arent what it seems.
