@ozbking: I could not read the first article but i do remember to watch his speech at National Press Club. I did not remember he was talking about re-education of taiwan.
i could not understand what they were talking about in the second link.
Even two diplomats speak does not make it a policy and to make a link of re-education camp is the work of western media at its best.

                • @jowu15: I guess they won't be able to send them all to Xinjiang.

        • +3

totally agree. Taiwan passport is shown Republic of China. Not Country Taiwan

          As you said:
If you think ROC should represent China instead PRC then fine, we can talk about that, but saying Taiwan is not part of China is just plain stupid

If people dont like Xi is fine, if people want another Party or person in charge of PRC or ROC is also fine.

BUT, Taiwan and main land are both part of CHINA

          • @formatc:

            if people want another Party

Is there another? Or is there only just the one?

          • -1

@formatc: @formatc That is NOT true. Taiwan has original Taiwanese inhabitants (similar to our Aborigines).

The ruling Chinese party migrated there (after their defeat in mainland). Saying Taiwan is part of "CHINA" is like saying Australia is part of the UK (coz people were from Britain) or NZ is part of Australia (just coz we are close)?

        • +3

Taiwan is as much a part of China, as Australia is a part of England.

          • -2

@Xianese: No. Australia was only a colony of England. Taiwan is part of China.

            • @jowu15: How can they be one country when they're run completely separately? With different currencies, leaders, trade agreements, diplomatic relations, and so on?

              • +1

@Xianese: West German and East German had separate currencies, leaders, etc. Thats not the reason for them to unified.

                • @jowu15: Vastly different situation but y'know, whatever. Don't hurt your back with all the reaching you're doing.

          • +2

@Xianese: Australia is in eurovision. So theres that.

    • +1

      Two buttons meme:
      a) No not included as Hong Kong isn’t part of China
      b) Hong Kong is definitely part of China

    • +18

      Taiwan is not China

      • +20

        china is taiwan

      • +2

I bet you $100 that China absorbs Taiwan one way or another within 300 years.

        • +6

I think 20 years is enough

          • @jowu15: You're probably right, but I think China plays the long game more than any other country.

          • -1

@jowu15: so you are saying its not part of china yet at this moment.

            • +1

@nonoannie: Taiwan is part of China, but because of historical reasonable, they are governed separately. Its like West and East German before they united. I never heard West German and East German were not German.

              • +1

@jowu15: It's more like North and South Vietnam. If the Vietnam war wasn't decisive then South Vietnam could still exist as a small independent country today.

        • +1

Will China really risk it and invade Taiwan?

          • -7

@shkippy: First Taiwan is part of China, so please do not use invade.
Why you think you can threaten China!!! China in 2023 is not China in 1847. You threaten China because of USA military power, but USA did not win over China in Korean war, when China just finish its civil war and China was war torn country. What give you confidence, that USA can win over China now!!!

            • @jowu15: Just watch the video, there are a lot more complexities than just the US military.

              • @shkippy: I watched the video, there is no new information in that video for me. China said Taiwan is part of China long before TSMC even establish. In fact some information is bit out of date now. USA forced TSMC to build factories in USA to produce its latest chips, its not just moved production line, but also over 600 engineers.
In the video there is one line caught my interest: Taiwan is part of first island chain to keep China at bay. If this is not imperialist, I do not know what it is.

            • -1

              @jowu15: lol
So how about South Korea and North Korea? They are both Korea, but everyone know they are different countries.

              • @nonoannie: The gov don't really want to be united.

              • +1

@nonoannie: I heard South Korea parliament has one section reserved for North Korea.

            • +2

@jowu15: Invasion isn’t about whether Taiwan is part of China or not. The term invasion means for “ an armed force to enter (a country or region) so as to subjugate or occupy it.”
Sure Taiwan is a region, just like Victoria, , or Donbas, or Australia.

The problem with your thinking is that you are wanting strict borders everywhere. Why can’t it be more like the EU with freedom of movement, and preferably the same currency in a stable economy?

The Chinese government is missing out on its opportunity to become a soft power leader, and develop a trading union that other countries actually look towards. Instead it is stuck in the imperialistic mindset, especially with the talks of invading Taiwan and the south China seas.

              • +1

@ozbking: It's all about semiconductors… Nothing really to do with their imperialistic mindset.

                • @shkippy: Its all about USA imperialism thats why its want to keep China in the first island chain that Taiwan is part. Semiconductors is only a tool to repress China and lock China inside of first island chain that USA developed.

              • +1

@ozbking: Most countries don't even recognize Taiwan as an independent country. The Commies moving their military from the mainland to Taiwan is just like the American army units moving units from Texas to Alabama. I love watching Chinese military parades, all the weaponry and the disciplined troops.

If countries want to show support for Taiwan, recognize it as a separate country. But all our cowardly government cares about is trade deals with the Communist Party.

                • @Thaal Sinestro: Actually its more like the yanks going to hawaii and claiming that as their 52nd state and building a military port there…

              • +1

@ozbking: Chinese have imperialistic mindset ? Read a few books (or watch documentaries) on what was happening in China in the 19th century. They just learnt that lesson too well.
PS I don't support dictatorship (whatever definition of that word is) and I like democracy (again whatever definition of that word is) but we cannot ignore events that took place in the past.

              • @ozbking: I would say mainland and Taiwan civil war has not formally stop.
America will never allow China to grow unchecked, they will always find reasons to repress China to keep China in its place.
Famous Singapore diplomat Kishore Mahbunani said China behaved much better than USA when its at similar stage of development. China has not had a war which any country for more than 40 years but USA never stop invalid other contries.
Imperialist: did not watch the video Shkippy linked video that USA want to lock China inside first island chain. thats imperialist.

            • @jowu15: So the Wu Mao's are even on OZB now.

            • @jowu15: 'but USA did not win over China in Korean war'

Your history def learned from Chinese school in mainland, weren't you? lol

              • @Kvs: I have lived in Australia for over 30 years I have never heard USA won Korean war. If USA won there wont be North/South Korea

                • @jowu15: I'm so sad u live in AU for 30 yrs but still affected by Chinese propaganda. You get all your daily news and information from CCTV, Wechat friend circle, redbook etc, don't you? lmao. Read more so u will never say it is the US who is the opponent of China in the Korean war.

                  • @Kvs: I do not know where you get confidence to describe me but you imagination about me is totally wrong. I arrived in AU in 1990 and stayed in Geelong for a year before went to Monash University in Melbourne. When I was in Geelong I had months had no one to speak Chinese to except when I rang my family in China, but I could not do it often because calls to China cost about $2.8 a minutes.

I have very few Chinese friend because there were very few Chinese students in Monash in early 1990s. My working environment had very few Chinese. I was quite custommed to not speak Chinese till these days, my family here not speak Chinese.

I was quite against PRChina till 2008 when I no longer believe western freedom of speech. I see many dark side in politics and business in western countries during my years in business. I see little difference between western politics and Chinese politics these days. China was not as bad as I thought and western is not as good as i thought in my youth.

I use wechat with my family in China i have few then 15 friends on wechat. I do not watch CCTV, I heard about redbook but I never even looked redbook, it that a website or app?

                    • @jowu15:

China was not as bad as I thought and western is not as good as i thought in my youth.

And here we finally get to the crux of the matter. It has nothing really to do with if China has the right or not to invade Taiwan, but which system you think is the lesser evil. In the era of Trumpism/far right populist leaders & weaponised misinformation it seems like the beginning of the end for democracy and I admit I have recently gone through a similar thought process, but my conclusion is entirely different.

As an example, in the US one infamous example is the torture used in Guantanamo bay in the name of freedom. A key difference between the US and China is the US have since passed laws to prevent the same thing happening again. If China was the one in charge of Guantanamo, I don't think we would hear about it (like Uyghurs in Xinjiang). So while it is not perfect I would prefer the US system of being held to some accountability as opposed to "out of sight, out of mind".

I will admit I am in awe of China's policies lifting 770 million of its citizens out of poverty in just four decades. But what if a leader with sociopathic tendencies and disregard for the people they govern makes their way to power? In a true democracy, deposing a leader is somewhat easier than an authoritarian regime.

While both systems are far from perfect, until a better option presents itself, I will try and be content with our current system in Australia.

                    • @jowu15: Sounds so true. Typical propaganda langrage like I used to hate China but after I live oversea for long time and find there are no difference. Then you tell me what make you feel like that? You against AU gov and then you disappeared? You didn't support PM and ask he down then the gov put you into the jail?

I'm not saying so called west countries are heaven, China also not hell since you got your parents and friends here at least. But funny thing is, you still choose live in AU instead of China. That's a smart choice since you know it's safe to stay AU to like China.

Sorry but you seems lost our topic, we are talking about where you got your information and news from if you stay oversea but not watch so called western media like CNN, BBC and ABC etc. Also you said you information source not from China propaganda, so I am pretty curious about your daily news and information source.

            • @jowu15: Some people don't understand when you lose a civil war you don't go create a new country on an island. Imagine that happened in America it just doesn't happen.

What happen in Vietnam you lose the civil war there is only one country.

      • Technically Taiwan is China. There are two Chinas. PRC and POC.

The funny thing is no booking link is provided, and this post is now on the front page…wtf?

    • the funny thing is that you can click on the "GO TO DEAL" button and it takes you to Google Flights.

    • The word 'Melbourne' links to Google flights showing these flights and you can book directly from there, as does the word 'Sydney' in the post

  • +2

All flights are via Guangzhou on China Southern

Why not have this in title instead of on Full Service Airline

    • +2

Certain demographics are attracted to certain words. I know why I clicked.

      • +1

        Ozbargain demographics love chinese full

Hasn't covid exploded there? I'm going to wait for it to normalise a bit - they're all going through their first true covid experiences.

    • March dates, 2 more months, 2~3 more waves possible. Should be right, unless some other super bug pops up around the world. I herd the Indian variant just got detected in China -_-… (BA.2.75)

Edit, then again BA.2.75 is here as well so we're covered :D

    • you never had covid before? well, hope you like staying home then.

      • +2

        I've had it.

I've also had a common cold before, doesn't mean I want to hang around people sniffling and coughing. I got shit to do.

  • +1

is this one way or return?

    • +39

Depends on what you've said about the CCP.

      • +3

        Touche!

      • -100

      • +7

Isn't it funny that covid and Ukraine war made us all forget about those innocent civilians that China is torturing in Xinjiang?

Oh well, one battle at a time.

        • -7

          Coz it's all BS

        • it's not like no other country doesn't have their own domestic issues eh? How's the mass shooting every day going?

    • Depends on whether or not you involve yourself in any protests while you are there.

  • +9

Is the kidnapping by the CCP included? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detention_of_Michael_Spavor_an…

Happy to be downvoted… but please explain why you do so.

This seems like an awfully expensive way to get covid…

    • +5

      Covid is everywhere already

      • Depends which strain want

        • +2

Pretty sure that's not the way it works… You walk into a 420 shop in the EU and point to the strain you want

    • Just catch covid in Australia and you'll be fine in China

  • +10

my mum went in nov and had to lockdown 3 times, eventually got covid, couldnt board her flight back, then tickets were 3grand to fly back cause of cny..

    a great place to visit

    • -3

      Those lockdowns are over

      • +1

        Lol, no they aren't.

  • +3

I heard they do covid butt test

    • +2

      Costs extra. Not a bargain.

  • +6

The plane returns but you may not.

  • +15

When my friend went there he was shadowed by a pair of government goons the whole time. They would 'bump into' him wherever he went in the city, be eating food in the cafe across the street glancing over, and probing about his opinions of the government whenever they reappeared from thin air around a corner.

I would not risk my life in that place even if the tickets were free. One wrong word and you're in the gulag for life.

    • +18

Reportedly there are millions of foreigners to visit China each year, apparently China cannot cover everyone of them.
So here is my question, why your friend?

    • I'm pretty sure loan sharks follow bad debt into other countries as well ;P

  • +16

20 years ago, China was an amazing place to visit…now, forget it

    • +10

That's because 20 years ago you went as part of poverty tourism.

      • +2

And China puts on a good poverty show. Like actors performing traditional and extremely inefficient farming methods for tourists.
