*Price Update on Amazon - $23.84

Just ordered one through JB HiFi Price match.
Note: JB HiFi can only price match Amazon products that are sold and shipped by Amazon AU.

  • Used $10 perks (Welcome coupon with 22 Dec 2022 expiry but still worked)
  • Got a $5 JB HiFi gift card from Shopback Gift cards for New Users with 50% cashback offer and paid it using the cashback accumulated overtime
  • Bought another $10 JB HiFi Gift card from Shopback with 2.5% cashback offer.
  • Applied both gift cards on the payment screen.
  • Used click and collect.
  • Got it for free without having to pay anything from my bank.

The least you may get it for is $14.04 if you still have JB Perks.

Hope this helps.

    Perks not expired yet?

    • I used JB Perks Welcome coupon which was supposed to expire on 22 Dec 2022, I tried it anyways and it worked.

      P.S. Post updated.

  • How did you use $10 JB perks, mine says expiry was 22-Jan ? Which is strange because I only got it on 18-Jan. Surely only having 4 days to use it can't be correct…..

Thanks, might try to use mine as well.

        • I had the same voucher and tried mine with no success, it said expired unfortunately. In this case I'd rather buy from Amazon and have it delivered for free lol.

          • @Tythefly86: Yep, just tried mine from 18-Jan, says expired :(
Giving us only 4 days to use it is rubbish, I don't even check my emails that often, it was expired by the time I saw the email.

  • How did you order one through JB HiFi Price match? Online (can't see how did you do it) or in-store (print the 'Goto Deal' page from Amazon)?

You'll have to call them up (13 52 44) or use the live chat and they will provide you a direct link to purchase online.

I did through Live Chat, easy and quick. They give you a direct docket link which expires at midnight on same day.

  • I picked up the solid metal / silver one of these from Amazon the other week to restore a Surface Pro laptop with only USB-C ports.
Firstly, it worked on both USB A and C and the restore went well.
Sadly, it has two major flaws and one minor issue, and these may only be for the metal version.
1/ The USB C connector is insanely tight / hard to seat. I managed to slide the swivel cover off mine part way before the USB C had seated fully. I removed the cover until I'd finished using the device.
2/ It gets impossible to hold hot when plugged into the USB A socket. If I had to guess, it would have been greater than 60c (the temp I usually run on my 3D printer bed).
3/ It gets quite warm plugged into the USB C socket, but not dangerously so.

All that happened when copying a few GB file onto the drive for a system restore.

This version may be different, and may not have the same issues. I'm still concerned about the lifespan of the device, especially when plugged into a USB A socket.

The metal version is meant to do exactly that - act as a heatsink so that it throttles less when reading/writing large quantities of data. So it's actually an advantage, if it isn't going to be touching you. All USBs generate heat, and the smaller they are the more concentrated that heat is gonna be.

      • +2

Sure, that I understand. It gets warm, all electronics do. The USB C side gets warm. The USB A gets dangerously hot. There's a big difference between 25-30c warm and 60-70c hot.

I've gotten myself curious as to how hot it gets. I might throw it back in the computer for a while and just copy over a few large files and measure the temp.

I'm tempted to buy one just out of curiosity, to see how unacceptably hot it can get with the metal housing.

    • I can confirm its a plastic one. Haven't used it yet to comment on the heat issues.

I got a price match from JB but I'm not using it since my welcome voucher is not working. Anyone wants the link, send me a dm. Saves you the time.

These are handy but agree with that they heat up when doing their transfers off the phone.

I have the plastic one but still have noticeable heat. For the sake of an odd backup for the boyfriend from his phone it does the job.

( but would always copy instead of "cutting" incase of corruption in the middle of it as he seems to always stuff up the charging ports with dust etc)

  • How is this a deal when you can pricematch for $19.95 at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/742427? Or pcbyte for $21? https://www.pcbyte.com.au/p/sandisk-128gb-ultra-dual-drive-g…
