          • @Muzeeb: All fasteners and materials differ.
Wood screws and sheet metal screws are either self piloting or tipped or libricated to not require drilling pilot holes.
Just like for a nail gun, you can find them coated in glue.

,… "Personally I've always used Reisser R2 wood screws which come pre-lubricated and I've VERY rarely had problems with the screws breaking or being hard to drive in, even without pre-drilling. I work at a joinery and we make thousands of hardwood windows each year. We've tried other screws as there's always somebody trying to sell their fancy new wood screws with Torx drive and cutting tips, self-countersinking heads etc. but nothing is a patch on the Reisser screws."…

Pilot holes aren't the choice for most professionals with the right tools and materials. Only when very necessary.
            Your choice I suppose.

@PlaunsJanus: Huh I had no idea screws can come "pre-lubricated"

I grab the leftover cake of soap (last 10%) thats always sitting in the shower caddy after the wife has opened a new cake of soap, rub the screw threads over the soap, then screw into the timber.

Works a treat - Im sure people have been using that trick for hundreds of years..

              • @systmworks: Absolutely one of the best methods.
Can you remember where you learned it?

@PlaunsJanus: From my Dad when I was maybe 6 or 7 years old (about 40 years ago)

  • Looks like a good gadget to screw!

  • I have one of these things and it is really handy for when you just need a Philips head/screwdriver quickly. Even putting furniture together with it is fine. I think I even installed a few door frame locks with it no issue.

Mine from this 2013 deal is still chugging along

  • Am curious to know if somebody can recommend me a case or something for this? No shoeboxes etc as I want something slightly more sturdy and can hold the bits as well.

  • USB Charging Cordless Screwdriver? Will be effective more or less on balsa timber.

I bought this in true ozbargain spirit buy now think later.

It's pretty nice size and all that but not sure when I'd use it over an 18v impact driver or drill though. Maybe when I'm dealing with a tight space.

Was disappointed it only has one speed, ie. you can't control the speed with how much you press the trigger. For this reason, with things like flat pack furniture I think I'd rather use my 18v Cordless drill set to a low torque setting

Been using it for nearly 3 years now for odd jobs around the house without any issues. Still goes the same as it did on day 1.
