Do You Use Fabric Softener?

I’m interested to know the OzB consensus on fabric softener after reading the comments on this deal.

  • Used to use it in sheets and towels. A couple of years ago I developed dermatitis where cleaning products stronger than bath soap trigger it so I stopped using it.

I really can’t say I notice any difference without it

Nope - not needed & leaves awful scent + coating on fabric

    • coating on fabric

Isnt that the idea, thats why you shouldn't use them on towels.

      leaves awful

There are tons of different scent, which one you been using? Fabric Softener Spice Allure so good.

Why do you want a stinky, synthetic coating on your clothes after washing them?

        • Lol stinky? Look like everything smell bad for you ? hyposmia? Same thing with perfumes too?

          synthetic coating

That's whats actually the bit that protects and soften the cloths.

            @boomramada: Synthetic scents reek!

If you need a scent, water-based essential oils can be mixed in with white vinegar for the rinse cycle.

@[Deactivated]: I dont know , I just like the smell of the fabric softener, specially in winter , even house smell good lol
But perfume smell goes away on strong direct sunlight tho.

Nope, use white vinegar instead, works a treat and does what the fabric softener is supposed to do in the first place, soften fabrics. No the clothes do not smell like vinegar. /Thread

Damn it, did the laundry today and just realized I forgot to put in the laundry liquid.

I never use regular softener though, occasionally use antibacterial stuff in the softener tray if I get animal muck on my clothes.

  • No. My wife does.

In every wash except when I'm doing a microfiber rag load.

Would not recommend. Does destroy washing machines. Plenty of YouTube videos on this. Use white vinegar instead.

    • +1

Yeah i seen few ppl complaining about destroying the washing machine but my electrolux still going stong for 15 years with fabric softener.

  • +1

I use liquid that has softener built in for clothes. For underwear and sheets/towels I use liquid without softener built in. I use the BioZet Attack or whatever it's called because apparently it has what neutralises cat urine.

  • +2

I like the way it makes my clothes smell.

  • +1

No. I just put cheap white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment instead. The vinegar unsticks soap residue from my clothes to make them cleaner, and cleans my washing machine to make it last longer too. No vinegar smell is left on clothing.

If your kids clothes have flame resistant chemicals in them Fabric softener can affect how well they resist flames.

Choice magazine says fabric softener is a waste of money:
    https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/laundry-and-cleani…

    • Choice magazine! BAH.

  • Only on our towels

    • +3

You are doing the opposite of what its intend to do, you shouldn't use it on towels/microfiber etc. This makes the towels less absorbent.
Looking at this tread, most doesn't even know what fabric softener does.

      • +1

We know it makes them less absorbent, however, it does makes them softer! I just do what the boss tells me. If it was up to me I'd be using a squeegee and absorbent sandpaper.

      • My towels don't have treads.

      • Apparently a spin through the tumble dryer is meant to soften them.

  • Remember the TV commercial: Your wife is cuddly…….

    • Or was it. Your wife's cuddly?

    • +1

Don't remember it. Just watch it

  • +2

Never. I just throw towels in the dryer. Sheridan actually recommends against fabric softener. "Fabric softeners are not recommended as they can produce a waxy build that leads to reduced absorbency and softness"

  • +1

I use it because dog hairs don't seem to attach/stay on the clothing as much as not using it

  • Never. I put towels in the dryer for a few minutes with dryer balls or use vinegar in the rinse cycle to soften towels up.

  • I recently discovered white vinegar too. It's great. Also cheap. I smell like chips.
