Nice price, $20 cheaper than humble even with the “choice” discount

    • +14

Humble bundle is terrible these days, remember when they just used to get whatever money they could from us in return for a bunch of games we would never play just to add to our steam library.

Now it's selling us retail priced games for no reason.

  • +7

Whats with the controversy around this game?

      • +23

Did you actually read all of her "trsnsohobic" comments?
I looked it up for the first time yesterday, given the media backlash I assumed they were going to be horrific, and I don't see anything that could be truly deemed "transphobic".
She even actively says she supports and empathises with trans people.
That phobic word gets thrown around a lot and the media are riding that wave and JK got crucified.

And I don't even like the Harry Potter franchise, so I've no reason to defend it.

          • +10

@Jec: So it's transphobic to make a distinction between biological women and trans-women? Are they not materially different?

        • +8

Agree with this take. Being a latte sipping lefty snowflake myself, I was ready to be outraged so did some research about what she actual said. I can't be bothered looking it up again so I can't recall exactly what it was she said, but I did think "Is that it?".

Perhaps I'm not as progressive as I think I am lol

        • +4

so it wasnt just me thats confused about why she's getting bashed for posting something so obvious and not even offensive

people on twitter are just morons

    • +39

From what I've read it's something like:
JK Rowling said transwomen aren't women. Warner Bros says JK Rowling has nothing to do with the game. They put a trans character into the game and the character creation restrictions are fairly loose.

So you have people that hate JK Rowling for what she said, and then you have people that hate warner Bros for what they put in the game.

      Result of algorithm = DRAMAAAAA

      • +3

I think it's mostly that people who disagree with transphobes don't want to assist in bankrolling them.
Whether or not she had anything to do with it, it's her IP and she's no doubt seen (Or will see) a payday because of the game.

        • +28

it's a strange hill to die on though. influential woman doesn't like trans people. you don't want $2 of your purchase to go to her, I get that.

but do these people do the same for the clothes they buy that contribute to sweat shops? do they refuse to buy iPhones because of labour conditions? where do you draw the line? this one is just easy to get angry at people for because it's social justice related.

I actually only bought this cos of /r/gamingcirclejerk saying ANYONE buying it is a transphobe (I didn't even have any interest in buying it lol), game is great though.

            • +5

@Sleeqb7: the majority of people aren't buying it cos they don't care about Harry Potter. 1-2% of those that aren't buying it are because they are plugged into the Twittersphere enough to care about this sort of drama.

              • @[Deactivated]: Sorry, should have been clearer.

The overwhelming majority of people not buying it *because of JK** are doing so simply to not financially support a transphobe

            • -1

@Sleeqb7: I agree that the majority of people don’t really care about what others do, but you cannot deny there is a lot of bullying, harassment to people streaming it online.

One can make their own choices for their own ethical reasons but shouldn’t be forcing others to make the same decision.

And all she said (to my knowledge) was she doesn’t want to share bathrooms with transgender women.
That doesn’t automatically make her a transphobe if she feels unsafe.

            • +4

@Sleeqb7: dw mate i'll buy 2 to compensate for yours

          • +3

            @[Deactivated]:

            • Don't want to bankroll transphobe by purchasing their IP = strange hill to die on
            • Purchasing a $70-80 game I don't want to own the libs = lol
            • +10

@thatnewtechsmell: yes be so afraid of bankrolling one of the most successful and rich authors of the century who donates most her money anyway. how much of this $75 do you think really even lands in her account?

this is like saying that playing Bloodborne was also damaging because it had Lovecraftian themes and Lovecraft was a racist.

99.9% of people don't even know what a TERF is but it is really, REALLY stupid to explicitly state that anyone who plays a videogame based on a story from their childhood is a fully responsible contributor to issues faced by a marginalised group. This was actually my original point on GCJ which I got banned for for not explicitly waving the hard-left flag. I am probably further left than everyone in these comments, that doesn't stop me calling out dumb and damaging behaviour.
I am a great example, if idiotic lefties like GCJ were able to stfu for 5 minutes without demonizing everyone who doesn't pledge public, unfettered support for whatever their current cause is, then that's at least one less purchase this game would have had.

tl;dr you people are literally achieving the opposite of what you want by being so annoying about it. learn. grow. improve.

            • +3

@nope: but in this case we are directly comparing 2 cases of 'the way your convenience inadvertently contributes to the marginalisation of specific demographics'. we are literally being told we are bad people for doing a certain thing for our own enjoyment, so your meme is oh so funny and i feel very very owned but it's pretty disingenuous, no? nice contribution to the discussion though :)

shit, the iPhone comparison is about literally funding the exact action you're decrying, while this is playing a videogame where the original author has expressed controversial opinions? get some perspective, man

                • +3

                  @nope:

yes, whereas funding an open bigot is cool and fine.

you got me - I bought something for myself, and as a result a person who has expressed questionable views on Twitter will grow richer.

you just don't get to pretend to yourself that it's morally good or even neutral!

don't I? watch me. we clearly have different moral stances, but I want to thank you anyway for being the sort of screechy voice that made me pre order in the first place - because it's a really good game, and I'm having a great time! does it make you feel better if i tell you my wizard is genderfluid, with blue hair? because they are.

would you mind letting me know what exactly Rowling has said that is so bad that my measly amount of funding towards it is so morally affronting?

I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you…. And in my opinion, nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.”

It's not like this is a new work by Rowling, post-controversy. this is people wanting to revere in a digital reproduction of a fantasy world from their childhood, completely irrespective of whoever is mad at whom.

did you actually read the article you linked? I agree that trans women are women, but for the amount of hate Rowling is getting her stance is VERY common. I would say that literally everyone I can think of 40+ probably thinks exactly the same as Rowling does, so emphasising the need to cancel her for it and saying it's a black mark on the morality of anyone who disagrees with you is really dumb.

                      • -1

A lot of old people are racist therefore it's fine. This isn't true anyway. The oldest millennials are in their forties, ffs. You can't tell me that they're going to be transphobes on average, at least outside of nonce island. Even if you just want to talk about boomers, a lot of them actually aren't proud bigots, surprisingly.

this is people wanting to revere in a digital reproduction of a fantasy world from their childhood, completely irrespective of whoever is mad at whom.

Yeah, I too enjoy putting down slave rebellions. The lead designer of this game until 2021 was this guy, so even if you just want to have some apolitical fun or whatever, that's not what you're going to get here. Putting aside that that concept makes no sense, of course.

They're not. What they are is exactly as "transphobic" as J K Rowling: they are happy for people to live their lives how they like, but don't support insane stuff like ending women's sports, letting very manly men convicted of rape into women's prisons just for saying they are women now, and other obviously silly things.

Go have a read of her actual tweets. They're not even a little bit transphobic.

        • Personally, I don’t understand it.

If I was a twitch streamer I’d be all over this stuff, I’d be playing it and donating any profits to pro trans charities. If I had any sort of influence I’d be organising “wizard” themed transgender events. Id turn up to Mardi Gras wearing wizard robes and being as fabulously transgender as you can possibly be.

It’s easy to boycott something, but in the end it’s not going to bother her in the slightest. But turning her money making Harry Potter series into a giant pro transgender event would hurt her far more than a handful of people boycotting a game that they probably wouldn’t have purchased in the first place.

      • +17

JK Rowling said transwomen aren't women

        Except she never said that

        • +7

Dont let facts get in the way of the LGBTQXWRT+ crew. Its either you support 100% or you are fully against them.

        • she basically did though? that's like her whole thing. she doesn't consider trans women to be women and has illustrated this quite a bit.

Rowling was quickly accused of being transphobic, initially by activists, although she argued it “isn’t hate to speak the truth”. She considers contemporary mores to be the most misogynistic she has experienced, she has said, lamenting: “It isn’t enough for women to be trans allies. Women must accept and admit there is no material difference between trans women and themselves.”

          lol

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: @noodlesfordaddy: Are you straight? If so would you marry a trans woman? Are they really the same?

            • +1

@consoles4fun: i'm literally just stating what her stance is - and that's that trans women aren't the same as cis women. that's it.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Nothing in that quote says she doesn't think trans women are women. She just doesn't consider trans women to be biological women and any sensible person should think the same.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Because they aren't woman. Even the most convincing ones have their tells. This stuff is just insane. Im all people being whobthey want to be but if it looks like a bloke in a dress, its a bloke in a dress

      • +2

ok fk so is it a good game or what? lol

      • +36

If the trans community needs so much reassurance from the rest of the world and everyone needs to have the exact same opinions about the topic then good luck.

      • +13

Please provide a source for 'self admitted transophobe'. In fact, what has JK Rowling actually said that's so offensive?

        • +28

She is actually self admitted not transphobic.

She has been vehement in her opinion that CIS women and trans women differ biologically, and the issues they're faced with, this is why she is labelled as transphobic.

          • +7

@filmer: I must have been living under a rock but there are biologically difference right? I am sure she probably did more to be labelled transphobic.

            • +23

@Sunman: Careful, you'll be labelled transphobic.. I've even seen people attack someone for saying trans women will never have babies. Apparently that's forbidden too, sometimes each side goes a little too far. This time it's the left.

              • +16

@SubNoize: that's the problem..they dont want to have a discussion and want you to accept it blindly .. just like a lot of comments here have blindly accepted it without even understanding all the issues

            • +12

@Sunman: Nope, she didn't. That's the entirety of her "crimes". Some people just make things up on the internet for attention. Shocking, I know!

            • +1

@Sunman: Yeah she did do more - she said it on Twitter.

She just said she felt unsafe sharing bathrooms.

It hurt their pride, which is why all this backlash is so strong.

          • +2

@filmer: This is my understanding too.

          • -6

@filmer: That's extremely reductionist, she is very much a transphobe.

But ultimately, who cares. She is just one person, her opinions are pretty irrelevant to anything. She isn't even top 100 in the worst billionaires you can give money to

            • @Pacify: I don't think believing there is a difference between cis women and trans women, and that their issues and struggles differ makes you transphobic.

I don't think having a concern that some men will pretend to be trans to prey on women is unjustified - this has surely already happened. I don't think worrying that certain parents will convince their children they are actually a man/boy because they have masculine traits as a female (or vice versa), and prompting hormone therapy is unjustified. This has already happened.

She supports their choice and their struggles.

      • +8

ahh yes the most important issue in the world

      • +10

how well would you like to be lumped with Scott Morrison, Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Matt Gaetz, MTG etc etc? I bet shoehorning you into that community would make it very easy to pick you apart too

      • +12

don't forget the massive storm they are pulling on Reddit. I literally got banned for querying a post that said that JK Rowling's transphobia is present in the game so you can't ignore it. it's lunacy.

        • +3

Easier to just view reddit as a shithole of an echo chamber, moderated by children without critical thinking.

It's no surprise when outsiders come in and ask questions and get banned, because they assume it's a rhetorical question and not a genuine question from someone trying to be better informed.

        • Reddit is just a leftist shithole, you get banned for anything and everything.

      • +39

Dagmar, it's misinformation like this that further enflames the Rowling/trans debate.

"it helps fund JK Rowling who is a self-admitted transphobe"
Totally wrong. Rowling supports most facets of trans rights. She simply wants women-only spaces to remain women only, for the sake of vulnerable women and girls. In her Scotland home a recent law means ANY male can self-identify as female, without any medical assessment required, and then have legal access to women's bathrooms, changerooms, refuges, even jails. This is an obvious avenue for abusers to gain access to vulnerable women. In Rowling's own words:

"I want trans women to be safe. At the same time, I do not want to make natal girls and women less safe. When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman – and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth."
        https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/j-k-rowling-writes-about-…

"Late last year, JK Rowling stated her royalty cheques will get donated to anti-trans groups"

        That's absolutely false, never happened.

        • +12

Thank you for speaking the truth.

You don't need to look far to find examples of convicted male rapists identifying as women and being housed in women's prison. Or transwomen turning up to women's domestic abuse shelters and getting physically aroused when hearing other's stories of being violently raped. Biological males and biological females are not the same, and they require their own spaces.

            • +16

              @BeauKilla: From the UK:

Comparisons of official MOJ statistics from March / April 2019 (most recent
              official count of transgender prisoners):
              76 sex offenders out of 129 transwomen = 58.9%
125 sex offenders out of 3812 women in prison = 3.3%
13234 sex offenders out of 78781 men in prison =
              16.8%

Would you want your mother housed with the 58.9% group?

              • +2

@[Deactivated]: Would only want other sex offenders boxed together, then they can offend each other.

              • @[Deactivated]: Maybe your mother shouldn't do the crime if she doesn’t want to do the time.

        • +15

@ayoole thank god we have some sane people here.
I've no interest in the Harry Potter franchise, so I've been drip fed the JK hate indirectly via the media for the last couple of years.

I finally did my own research yesterday out of curiosity to see what she had said and I was amazed (well, not entirely amazed given the woke culture) to find she's probably got the same beliefs as 90% of the people in the world and doesn't seem at all transphobic.

          • +13

@Deviner: Same. I'm left of centre and assumed the nonsense about JKR being a TERF must be true, you hear it so often online.

I was horrified when I actually read a few of her "controversial" tweets and it's all common sense stuff like "stop sending death threats to battered wives because they admitted feeling uncomfortable their case worker was born a man" and "maybe we should think carefully about whether a convicted serial rapist bloke should be allowed in a women's prison for just saying he's decided he's a girl now" and other obviously sensible stuff.

The way she's been treated is pretty vile.

            • +9

@GandalfTheCheap: @Deviner @GandalfTheCheap. What's really sad is that Rowling, who is quite pro-trans rights in most ways, would have been a fantastic ally of the trans community. Imagine having the support of her profile and presence in their fight. But the militant trans activists only accept all or nothing, so her nuanced views on women's spaces made her their enemy instead.

Trans people have real enemies in the community - politicians who will ban them from schools, military and government positions, businesses who won't employ them, etc etc. But trans activists have chosen the creator of a major gay character in one of the most successful franchises of all times, and one of the greatest philanthropists of our era, having given more than a billion dollars to charities supporting vulnerable children, orphans, women, MS research, injured war veterans and more … to be their villain.

It won't do them any favours in the long run, as the general populace gets more and more confronted by their militancy and threats.

      • +7

@dagmar Have you got a source for any of these points?
Sounds like you've been brainwashed by the media, or trans activist groups.

I've looked up the royalty cheque thing and there's literally no references to it at all, other than her saying "my royalty cheques help me sleep at night".

She's also not a self-admitted transphobe - she's even said she would happily protest and march alongside trans people if they were ever discriminated against purely for being trans.

If there is anything, her current axe to grind is with the now super radicalised trans activists, rather than trans people.
The activists have being sending her all sorts of death threats for ages now, which seems to be glossed over because the media have made her public enemy #1.

      • +3

Watching some streams….this game actually looks pretty decent

Played 3 hours on the PS5 so far and it's an amazing game. Combat is actually quite hard and takes some getting used to all the spells and how to chain them together etc

You will get lost and spend lots of time explorting the castle and opening chests and doing quests.

    Great fun!

Thank you for the review, I just wanted to know if the game was good and fun to play without references to the books or films.
