Big air coolers look freakin sexy

I use this. It's BIG. Just check case specs for CPU cooler max height and ram clearance. I use Corsair LPX and it's a tight fit.

    • It's big, may be a tight fit. Gotcha.

    • Same here. You will be restricted by RAM choice if you go with this cooler.

    Says $109.99 on amazon

Oh wait, just saw the "apply $20 coupon"!

Sinister heatpipe technology? No wonder it's on sale.

Not very stealthy for an assassin

  • Unlike last time when it was this price they don't mention it includes the LGA1700 bracket this time? So we'd have to buy it separately?
    Edit: Was actually $2 cheaper.

  • Are these better than budget liquid coolers?

Mine cools better than the corsair AIO that it replaced.

      • Noise wise, how do they compare?

        • +1

I've currently got a 5600x under, which doesn't really get hot so it's very quiet. But previously it had a 3900x to keep cool and that would ramp up the fans a little. Still not a problem when I was wearing my headset.

    • I'd go aio all the way. Keep the CPU heat out of your case. I've a 12400, and it doesn't heat up that much no matter what I put on it. But getting the heat out with the aio meant my gpu (and case/mb in general) ran a fair bit cooler. That in turn means the case fans run slower, and pc is quieter.

Too big for me, won't fit.

Waiting to see what the Assassin IV brings after it's announcement at CES. Looks really clean too.

  • this or thermalright PA 120SE (which is slightly cheaper)?

    • Edit: Wrong cooler name I remembered, this is one of the best air coolers on the market so if you want max cooling.

Noise level 34.2 dB vs max 24.6 for Noctua NH-D15? Thanks, I'll pass.

Because noise output is something that's measured differently between manufacturers, comparing the spec between different manufacturers is a fool's errand. In one of many independent reviews we see 42 for the D15 vs 46 for the A3 at 100% fan speed. Gamers Nexus has the D15 at 43.9 vs the A3 at 46. If you look at other reviews you'll find other, different figures, but I doubt many of them will be showing a 10 dB difference.

Yet even if the the listed difference did accurately convey their noise at max RPM, how important is that really? Basically nobody is out there running their high-end air cooler at 100% all the time, and it tells you nothing about how well it's cooling. If I stick a really slow fan on a small heat sink, it can easily go sub 20 db — and also cool like crap. Not a very helpful metric for normal usage.

What's more useful to compare is noise vs cooling performance (in reviews), where both the D15 and and the A3 do well. If you freeze frame on the chart here you'll notice that both coolers are performing the same (within 0.3 degrees) at a 198W load when noise-normalized at 35dbA in their setup.

  • Anyone have an old decent AM4 cooler they want to sell cheap? Doing a ryzen ghetto spec build. 😛

    • Do tell?

  • I just saw this and was going to buy it as I remembered it reviewing as an equal to the NH-D15 but much better looking and cheaper, however after seeing that AK620 review, the Assassin III does not seem like a worthwhile purchase anymore.

The Deepcool AK620 has surpassed both the Assassin III and NH-D15, and is available normally for $100. It uses 2x120mm and has a 160mm height, giving it much better case compatibility, notably being able to fit in the ITX NR200. It is also a newer design and comes with LGA1700 compatible mounting.

The performance is slightly better too: the AK620's noise normalised performance at 200W is 1.5-2deg C better than both the Assassin III and NH-D15. Its 100% fan speed at 200W is ~4dBA quieter than the Assassin III for the same temperature, and 2dBA quieter than the NH-D15 for 1deg C cooler. At a more modest load of 123W, the AK620 and Assassin III perform the same, both about 1 deg C better than the NH-D15.

I think the incredible case compatibility (since I'm interested in the NR200), newer mounting hardware, earlier shipping date (this deal is March 9 ETA) and ~1deg C better performance of the AK620 is easily worth $10 extra.
