My hobby at the moment is menu planning and budgeting. I don’t know why but it absolutely fascinates me.

My meal planning at the moment is to get the most out of the ingredients I buy, so if we have a stew one night with celery in it, something over the next couple of days has to use the rest of the celery.. I’m getting angry seeing how much food gets wasted at my house on a weekly basis.

    • That drives me crazy too, and the celery mention struck a chord, as I can see a yellowing limp bunch in our fridge. I bought a big tray of mince yesterday to combat this.

  • Cars
    Motorbikes
    E-Mountain Biking
    Kayaking
    Hiking with the dog

    • Cycling (I have 8 bikes, two of which I just dropped $25k on, it's a hobby out of control)
    • Music (piano, guitar)
    • Travelling (been to 39 countries, of which 4 I've lived in >= 5 years)
    • Languages (I speak English, Mandarin and Dutch fluently, intermediate French, basic Spanish, Afrikaans and German). Part of this is from travelling and you can guess where I've lived in from the list
    • Cooking (I think I can cook quite well, but my opinion)

Don't have time to sleep but I also really enjoy sleeping :P

    • $25k!? What did you get?

      • Canyon Aeroad and Lux WC, both top specs.

I moved to The Netherlands a couple of years ago and I get a bike allowance (similar to FBT), as well as get paid to ride it to/from work (semi pro now 😉), so I will eventually reclaim the cost back. Can you call this a "high yield investment vehicle"?

Yes I still browse Ozbargain regularly 😁 the Dutch/European equivalent is https://nl.pepper.com/

        • Epic!!! I've got a Canyon Ultimate, love the Aeroads though.

Very cool about the bike allowance - if only that existed in Aus!

          • +1

@Tgb: My head says Ultimate but my heart says Aeroad. I just love the shape and the colour (fenix alpecin white/blue). The Ultimate is in every way a better bike though - cheaper, lighter and slightly better handling (wheel depth), but I'm a form over function guy 🙈

Super awesome to hear you've got a Canyon too! Great minds think alike 😁

still getting video games hoping to enjoy it like before.

Aiming to pay for our 6-week Europe holiday with it. On track so far!

  • Home automation. When at home, my phone controls so much of my house it feels like I have magic powers. I especially notice this when we stay at places away from my house and I dont have that level of control or data (what is the temperature in my son's rooms) etc.

  • My hobby is procrastinating whatever I have to do

Using my sling to knock drones out of the sky then replacing the memory card with an album of my best seagulls photos then taking the drone to the police and say I found it in a tree

  • Gaming with the kids and wife, building Lego, also grow and sell cactus and succulents, and Diamond Dotz for a bit of sorta art therapy.

  • Playing with Blender - the open source 3D software.
There's always more to learn - modelling, rendering, animation, rigging, simulations etc.
And then if I'm keen I can submit bugfixes or enhancements.

  • Working on maintaining/modifying "older" cars (mostly JDM) - but like everything else, spare parts, mods etc cost a fair bit more than pre covid.

  • Mechanical keyboards.

Protip: Dont get into mechanical keyboards.

    • How is this a hobby?.

      • +2

Like many of the other things in this thread, keyboards can be built and modified. There are a number of types you can get into and then once you have one, you can then swap out switches, stablisers, keycaps and get very VERY custom with it all to change up the look and feel.

        Also it gets very expensive.

  • +3

Discovering a new hobby, buying all the required tools and material and then never actually start doing the hobby itself before moving onto discovering a new hobby etc…

  • Sim racing. Started in covid when I built my first PC, it's gotten a lot more serious since (and expensive)

  • surprised there's no beer brewing mentioned, as it can (arguably) save you money…and get you pissed at the same time!

so I'll add - (all grain) beer brewing. fkn ace fun. fair bit of work tho.

mountain biking for the win tho, just upgraded to a Nukeproof Mega Ally Pro and it's siiiiiiiick…

I’m planning on picking up DnD again.

Fly radio control planes. It is moderately expensive, but not crazy.

  • MTBs but recently 4x4 and shooting

  • Learning to fly.

Not the cheapest hobby (but not crazy expensive either) but super fun. Challenging but rewarding.

The next phase is to build a plane - now that will be expensive.

    • That would be awesome. What are you going to build?

      • I'm leaning towards an ICP Ventura:
        https://www.icpaviazione.it/flotta/ventura/?lang=en

They are developing a model of the Ventura that will be rated for the new RA Aus higher 760kg weight limit. It will cruise at 110knts+ for 5 hours. It's going to be a beast. It's realistically a 4-5 year project and is a massive commitment because once you start, you can't really stop - and it won't be cheap! There's method in this though because, as with a lot of things, light aircraft are in very short supply and what is for sale is usually rubbish/knackered and/or expensive. By building, I'd get a new aircraft exactly as I want it (engine/colour/avionics etc).

Just got to get my licence now!

    Only Fans.

astrophotography and flying (general aviation) both cost a fair bit

At the moment, I am composting.
I just love seeing my plants thrive.

    Other than that, photography.

    • +1

I thought you said composing like a musical piece. Then I read it again. Haha

  • I recently started creating slip cases for books…also started buying a lot more books so there's that too. I've always been a big fan of fantasy. However, I could only afford cheap MMPBs for the most part. I've been spending the last few months updating my library with hard backs and collectors editions. Been expensive, but I am finally in a good spot career/lifestyle wise!

  • One thing that surprised me reading through this thread…

Nobody mentioned "learning a new language".

Is there some kind of underlying reason for this? Makes me wonder.
