So worth revising your OP from:

What’s your hobby? We are living in busy times so what do you enjoy doing with your time apart from Ozbargain?

        • -1

I'm also pretty sure that his first reply was that his hobby was chess. I saw it immediately when posted. Strange edit.

Woke-Poking, though it's getting a bit too crowded ATM. :)

Is that code for having sex with easily offended people?

It's code for running interference so the world gets distracted from the equity divide.

That's called trolling. It's indicative of psychological problems. Get help.

Read that as “wife-poking” and thought the too crowded comment was about kids but then the reply comments made me re-read…

Nah, that's more of an art than mere hobby.. :)

I usually find people who use words such as woke are the ones actually fit the description rather than their targets.

      • -1

        How so?

        • The people using the word are typically peopel who think that the 'woke group' is some dumb trendy group that is pushing socialist ideas, and so by calling them or trolling them they're getting the upper hand/making them upset.

But it's usually those same people who are getting upset because they're uncomfortable with the changes that are coming and are unable to let go of their old ideas.

          • +1

@DingoBilly: So how does that make them 'woke'?
And what 'changes' are you referring to that we should accept without challenging?
And are you saying that woke doesn't refer to "some dumb trendy group that is pushing socialist ideas"?

I asked the last poster what he meant when he said "people who use words such as woke are the ones actually fit the description rather than their targets." So if your opinion is correct then people who use the word 'woke' are actually "some dumb trendy group that is pushing socialist ideas". Which is clearly not the case.

      • No, it should be yelling.

Been really into board games recently. It can be expensive but you don't need to buy any. I just turn up at one of the RSL clubs (like Castle Hill RSL, Club Parramatta or Chatswood RSL) that host weekly events and play with everyone else's games.

Also into reading, walking and computer games.

    • +1

Same here. We have a decent collection of board and card games we love playing over and over again. Most others we borrow from our local toy library or books library.

    • -4

Gosh, you're prepared to travel. I live in the North Shore and can walk to Chatswood but wouldn't drive much further than the Northern Beaches radius.

      • Pretty easy to get to Castle Hill and Chatswood with the metro line and Parramatta via bus

    • Do you mind sharing the board game event info? Can anyone rock up?

      • +2

Assuming you're also in Sydney here's some info:
Anyone can show up. You don't need to bring your own board games, there'll be plenty brought by others.

Club Parramatta: Monday 6pm+, Thursday 6pm+, Sunday (Once a month) 1pm+
        Chatswood RSL: Tuesday 7pm+, Saturday 11am - 5pm
        Castle Hill RSL: Saturday 3pm+

There are others you can find on this meetup page.

Metal detecting. Very good for mental health and you find a lot of interesting stuff.

    • Is it expensive to get into?

      • +15

You will need to spend about 1-1.5k to get setup properly with a decent detector such as Minelab Equinox 600 or 800, a stainless steel beach scoop, finds bag, digging knife and a good pinpointer. If you hunt the beaches seriously you will make that money back quite easily. However, I prefer park hunting and just like finding old pre-decimal coins, relics and the odd bit of jewellery. It didn't take me long to find enough goldies to pay off the cost of my detector, now I just enjoy getting out and about and the thrill of the hunt.

        • What are the laws regarding digging in parks?

          • +1

@Slunk78: It’s fine unless it explicitly states no metal detecting. You need to learn how to cut a clean plug. Remove all rubbish. I dig in front of council workers and police, never had any issue as I’m neat and tidy about it. Don’t use a shovel/dig big holes. Probe for target, then use either a screwdriver or hand digger to retrieve.

            • +2

@nubzy: What's your biggest find? Has anybody ever got angry at you while you're searching?

              • +1

@RolandWaites: Nothing fantastic to note. A few bits and pieces of jewelry, WW2 era army buttons, rising sun badge, some silver spoons, fishing lures.. all sorts of stuff. But most of my finds are coins. Oldest coin i've found so far is a 1910 threepence. I'm not in the ideal area for metal detecting, but still plenty of things to find. I would like to get more into beach detecting and go for a roadtrip to hit some rural sites.

            • @nubzy: Maybe I should get back into, I did it a few years ago but got frustrated because all I got was ringpulls and bottle caps. I only did beaches though.

              • @Slunk78: Once you learn your machine properly, you can avoid digging a lot of the junk. Although on beaches best practice is to dig everything. You have to learn the movement of the sand, tide lines etc to do well there as targets can be few and far between and plenty of bottle caps/ring pulls in the dry sand.

          • @Slunk78: Just make sure you don't dig up the graves.

    • +7

      Aaaaaahhhhh, a detectorist…

    • +11

Maybe you should post an AMA - I am a metal detector enthusiast for the rest of Ozbargain.

      • +1

I second that idea, have always been fascinated by metal detecting but never thought about it as a hobby

      • +1

Seconded also, I have a metal detector gathering dust and would love some pointers about getting started in the hobby.

    • If I lived in Europe I would love this as a hobby but I personally feel like the history aspect isn't there for Australia (in terms of ancient coins and such)

      • Yes we've only got just over 200 years of history here but it doesn't need to be ancient to be fun. The grail find in terms of coins in Australia is a gold sovereign. But even uncovering old silver threepence, sixpence, florins, shillings and pennys is exciting. Some of these coins can be worth money (most are only worth very little/melt value) but it's nice. You can find lots of relics and beach hunting has plenty of potential, some people do extremely well if they know how to read the beach.

If anyone is interested I suggest watching some youtube channels such as Coffeebushkid, Dirtfishmish and Dig It Detecting if you want to learn more about what you can find. Heaps of interesting stuff out there.

It's the kind of hobby you really have to try first. I never really gave it much thought until I bought my detector, learnt it properly and started connecting with other detectorists. It's very addictive once you get into it. It's not all ring pulls and tinfoil that's for sure..

        • Thank you for your reply. Will check those out

    • Love the Detectorists TV show 😁

I had a Minelab 800 and recently sold it.

It was fun to use and good exercise, but I never found anywhere near enough to even pay for the fuel to go to and from beaches. Obviously you're relying on people losing expensive items, and people do everything possible to avoid that. Found a small gold ring and a few silver necklaces. Even some old predecimal currency still on the beach. Prepare to dig up 20 ring pulls for every coin, and even those are becoming scarcer as people move away from physical currency.

Another thing is you need to hand all items that could be identified by an owner to police. Obviously not coins, but rings, necklaces, etc. Police keep them for two months and try to match lost property reports. You'll probably get the items back, unless police decide to keep the rings for their own auctions. Had that happen once. There is no such thing as 'finders keepers': it's theft.

Well marked gold fields on maps have been picked over for many decades. You won't find anything. Prepare to go really far off track if you want to find nuggets, otherwise you'll be scanning areas a hundred people have already walked over.

Obviously you can't detect on private property unless you have permission. That greatly limits many areas.
