      • +1

Not according to my kids…not into online games, prefer single player games such as city building games.

    • +1

How do you make the ginger beer? I've tried now and then different receipes for years and it always spoils. The alcoholic stuff I mean.

      • +1

never really worried too much about a recipe - boil the ginger (I have used fresh and crushed store bought ginger) and sugar (enough for around 8% alcohol), add lemon juice, add yeast (I just used basic yeast), wait, bottle and prime…like I said very poorly skilled but never had one burst yet….believe it or not but my favorite batch was my first…fermented in a 2L coke bottle with a balloon with pin hole in it on top…never tested strength or anything so seems I will be chasing that perfect combination for the rest of my life…there are worse habits I suppose

    *Cooking
    *Magic the Gathering
*Playing PC games (mainly BoI and other rogue likes)
    *Reading
    *Whistling
    *Leatherworking
    *Woodworking

The last 2 I'm not properly in to yet as I'm space-poor and also don't have many tools

Other hobbies I'd like to get in to are:
*Setting up/using my dodgy 3D printer
*Sport or martial art of some kind
    *Ice skating
    *Gardening
    *Shooting
*Riding dirt bikes or quad bikes
    *Juggling more than 3 balls
    *Rock climbing
    *Camping
    *Learning an instrument

Of these hobbies I would not recommend PC gaming or Magic the Gathering as they will waste your time (Hasbro also seems to have a gripe with the people that give them money not giving them enough money for DnD and MtG)

I do not support Hasbro making so many iterations of Monopoly and I'm impressed they seem so willing to burn through any good will they have with their player base

Thank you for coming to my soapbox

      *Leatherworking
      *Woodworking

Out of these two, leatherworking is WAY cheaper and WAY more space efficient. You can make lots of cool little items with very few tools. In saying that, I recently got well into woodworking and absolutely love it.

      • Where do you find wood source?

        • I usually get pine at Bunnings. It is fine for making things around the house (laptop holder, a few headphone holders, a few monitor stands, watch holder, a few PC cases, some shelves to hide things behind TVs). For some tables/benches, I used the acacia wood panels from Bunnings too. I also from time to time get wood from the street, old furniture people are throwing out.

From a few 3$ off cuts from Bunnings I made myself a bench, add a vice and you have a not-so-bad place to work.

Happy to hear where other get their wood… maybe I am sourcing it wrong.

        • Finding wood is actually tough - particularly if you don't own a jointer and planer to deal with undressed timber. I have used construction pine from Bunnings (which was fine for a Workbench I was making, but was mega shit to work with due to warping, loads of resinous bits etc). I have also used the Tassie Oak DAR boards from Bunnings which are expensive and require some hunting around between stores to find matching grain/colour and to generally get not shit ones. I have also bought full plywood sheets from a local supplier and had them delivered. Plywood from Bunnings looks to be pretty rubbish - so I wouldn't recommend. But I have struggled to find dressed hardwood from local suppliers online, as most places just seem to be selling to the construction industry.

      • Any tips on how to get into leatherworking? I am actually interested but I have no idea where to buy anything. What would be a good source of leather that you can recommend?

        • +1

I can't really speak for Sydney, but I went to a local-ish leather shop in Brisbane and just bought some of their veg-tanned offcuts. These were awesome value because they can't be used to make big items (bags etc) but they are the perfect size for smaller projects like wallets and stuff (I.e the ones you'll actually be starting out with). I originally bought some very thin chrome tanned kangaroo leather offcuts from Birsdsall leather for $11/kg, but I found this much harder/less satisfying to work with than the veg tanned cow leather I got later. The tools themselves are pretty easy to find online - and you don't need much to get started!

This was the first video I watched, it shows you how to hand stitch without needing a pony: https://youtu.be/EIGT_RXi8ZM

    • Magic the Gathering as they will waste your time

Time is the thing I'm worried about losing the least when it comes to Magic the Gathering, let's not talk about cEDH/Legacy format decks and how many of them I shamefully own.

    I’m sure there are others…

    • +2

What do people without hobbies do?

I used to wonder this too, until I realised one of my mates was like this during lockdowns. Absolutely no hobbies at all.

Works, drinks copious amounts of alcohol and smokes cigarettes. Sometimes ambles down to the local and plays pokies to pass time. Travels to Bali sometimes to drink. Activities usually centred around drinking. Makes decent coin for work but would be spending $300/week easily on smokes and alcohol.

      • This is true! Non smoker, not work the health implications or cost. I gave up drinking a few years ago, wasnt much of a drinker anyway. I've had family members with alcohol and gambling addictions so I rarely ever punt unless I'm on a holiday and go to a casino or similar. Spend my money on hobbies I guess haha

  • +1

3D printing. I've got a Prusa atm. Might sell it to upgrade to a Bambu P1P, not sure yet.

PC gaming. I'll admit I'm a bit of a tightarse and pirate a lot. I did recently buy Rimworld though and I can't put it down.

    Board gaming with friends.

Reading novels, especially sci-fi. I usually read a bit before bed every night.

Gym? I dunno if this is a hobby. Just something I somewhat enjoy doing because it makes me look better and feel stronger. If I could take a magic pill that gives me all the benefits of going to the gym I'd take it in a heartbeat.

And lastly cause it's Ozbargain: saving money. I love seeing that number going up, fighting against interest rate rises.

  • Lego , gym, swimming and gaming.

  • Propagating plants atm, it's a lot of fun to watch the roots form and duplicating the mother/father plant. If that's too physical, you can try Garden In! instead.
