Bloody Brits & their Botched Broadcast Bower 😂

    • +13

Agreed, NEVER get UK specs router, they're cr@p with their power limit.

      • Merlin fixes that doesn't it?

        • +4

No it doesn't. Hardcoded from the factory.

          • +3

@Twix: So.. even if I set this to AU country
it’s not going to happen? will be stuck with the low power limit dbi uk mode :( lame

            • +3

@TerryPlus: That's right. There are also some missing 5GHz Wi-Fi channels.

              • @Twix: Cfe flash?

      • Is this where UK routers limit their wireless signal strength to 15db only?

    • +3

So I should avoid this? Looking for a good wifi router for a medium sized home. My current one downs even make it past half the house.

      • +1

You just missed rt-ax56 deal yesterday

        • Yeah I did, I was pretty upset haha

          • @mrtee: Have a look at AX73 (AX5400) - normally around $230. When on sale, drops to around $190.

        • -2

          Ax56 is not that amazing!

        • the rt- ax56 arrived ….set it up and better coverage than my tplink which is also wifi AX ….very impresssed with the asus coverage and features compared to my tplink

I wonder if officeworks would price match if we just show the amazon item?

    • +1

OW won't price beat if they notice it's from Amazon UK.

    • -1

Yes, they do. I did that few months ago for my iPad

      • +2

OW price beat items sold by Amazon AU. If OW price beat Amazon UK/US iPad stock you got lucky.

        • -1

I have also got a pricebeat at officeworks from Amazon US for an item, like this one, that was listed on Amazon AU.

I don't think of is luck. They just factor in the extra shipping cost

          • @ohyesss: No true and I work for Officeworks haha

            • +1

@azzaisawesome: Good for you mate but I have had them match it. Seems others have too.

Edit- Someone has already got it pricematched at officeworks haha well done guys. Very valid statements and down votes.

          • @ohyesss: It's luck. OW staff are not meant to price beat overseas items.

            • @Twix: yes would be luck …. wouldn’t be identical for finer model number but your average sales person isn’t going to extract down to that level, heck our pro current people at work work with our IT kit. also the power packs are universal and come with multiple plugs so no au power pack is less of an issue …..
anyway no stock in inner melbourne so can’t buy what isn’t stocked …

    • Any reason you want to load Merlin over official firmware?

      • +2

        More features basically.

      • i tend to stick with factory firmware ….the asus has lots of features and i haven’t run out of any ….has multiple dns options but none for an add blocker, only thing missing is ad blocker and can’t be bothered using pi hole …

    • +3

Note that there’s a V2 of this modem that you’re likely to receive, and that is not merlin supported and the dev has confirmed that they’re not going to support it.

      • Thanks for giving this information about the unsupported v2 model.

  • I have a question for anyone having used AiMesh.

If I get 2x of these routers, eg. AX58U ,
and I use the wired backhaul,
then will 1 of the routers becomes the 'master controller' ?
or do both behave like 1 unit with a "virtual IP" address, etc.

    PS:
I have been using a GT-AX11000 for the last 3-4 years already,
and this has been a fantastic unit,
but just curious about splitting the WiFi coverage,
in 2 different locations, using 2 or 3 Asus routers.

    • They don't behave as 1 unit, the device used to setup Ai mesh acts as the master and all the settings between nodes will be the same so devices should automatically switch between them on wifi.

    • Not sure what you are getting at, but if you are using the AX11000 as the principal then if you set up the AiMesh adding more routers such as the AX58U will act as a node.

      • Sorry for not being specific.

I want to remove the GT-AX11000
and go for 2 x smaller AX units (with wired backhaul).

So, instead of 1x expensive unit,
and sitting in "middle" of the house,
I want to have 2x 'cheaper' units,
at either ends of the house.

I guess the others have answered the AiMesh question for me, ie. if there are 2x units , I will be configuring 1 unit as "master" and rest is as follows.

        • just use same ssid and key …. your device will connect to strongest signal initially ….if you walk to other end it will connect to other end if signal too weak ….being able to walk from one end of a floor to another is what we have at work because people walk with their laptops and don’t want teams connections to drop …. we drop them between floors WTF you want to get in a lift and have connection not drop ?
at home only reason i’d be worried about drop between APs is if my phone was on wireless and i’m walking from one of the house to the other talking and the IP protocol recovers so quick my call doesn’t drop , just loose a word or 2 in talking …..mesh is good as it’s an easy way to get coverage and not have to set up lots of ssid and keys ….

    • I have 3 routers setup, 1 main and 2 secondaries, covering about 250m2
DHCP only from main and others have DHCP turned off but same wifi names as main router.
All routers are connected via ethernet cables.
Your devices in this setup will automatically switch to closest/strongest wifi signal, nothing else to worry about.

Routers dont need to be same brand, same model.

      • -1

Devices don't automatically switch to stronger unless it's mesh….

        • True. You are correct. The devices won't switch to others automatically unless its Mesh.
          Sorry for my misunderstanding.

          • @Dalgona456: when it looses signal due to too many drops it will look for strongest AP …you might be on lower signal in transition …when we do heat maps we adjust the AP overlap and power so that users between APs don’t flip between APs unless they leave their desks …..

      • With Asus they need to be Asus Aimesh compatible.

        • if you want mesh yes need same brand ….if you have ethernet backhaul just use same ssid and keys you can mix vendors and you can walk from one end of the house to the other with a tiny drop on voip when it switches between APs …with a browser you wouldn’t know, watching you tube you wouldn’t know …..

  • Thought this is a dual band router, what's missing?

  • +17

Routers from the UK should stop being posted as deals. Sure, some people know the power is reduced, but these posts are probably doing more harm than good.

    • +6

On the contrary, I didn't know that before this post.

      • +3

I think that's the point, I didn't know either and would have bought one if not for the comments.

      • +1

I've said it in many, and so have many others on deals.

    • Agreed, I've said it many times. Nfi why people keep doing it.

    • Couldn't custom firmware be used to increase the power?

      • +1

        Comments here suggest no

    • didnt know uk was lower power ….just haven’t bought due to hassle of power pack and getting au power pack vs savings ….

    • I'd love to hear more about the power being reduced.

  • But no local ASUS warranty?

    • Asus AU won't cover you. You have to ship it back to Amazon UK.

  • +1

Man I wish for dsl-ax86u but that's never on sale again is it. I'd just rather not have to deal with two device since it seems like a waste of space and electricity unless someone can convince me otherwise

  • Super happy with the one I bought couple of years ago.
No issues with wifi performance and maxes out my 100Mb plan.

  • Would this cover around 20-25m going through three walls?

    • Depends what's in the walls. I've seen unit walls and floors that are unintended faraday cages.

    • In my experiences with similar, doubt it.

    • I got the ax 53U to upgrade my free router from awhile back as I couldn't get WiFi everywhere. The 53U manages to cover my 700m2 block and I still get wifi on the street.

    • the rt -ax56 is covering my 120m2 home and goes through 4 brick walls …very impressed, thought i’d need mesh but works fine for netflix and prime tv at far end of the house

  • Have to say, purchased the AU version of this and am having trouble getting any 5ghz 2x2 clients connecting at the full 1.2gbps rate. I get a random 907/830 or crap like that. The RT-AX86U and Telstra Smart Gen 3 both did this flawlessly. For this reason, I’m returning mine.

    • 5ghz doesn’t go through walls as well as2.4ghz …..i see it from signal strength and go 2.4ghz except when in room next to router. often the numbers are for the router, not many clients get these sorts of speeds ….i have pcie card and external antenna in my PC for high speed, not sure how a phone with internal antenna would try to achieve this through brick walls ….
the big numbers on router are for marketing …aggregated total throughput like 3 devices connecting and each grabbing some channels and frequencies in close proximity to router.

  • +4

Dont touch this, half the power output of an Aus spec router.

  • +3

OfficeWorks did a price beat for me. $167.42. The assistant wasn't convinced at first given this was shipping from the UK and needed a little push (nicely, of course) and she went for it.

So you get the AU version instead of the low powered UK version

    • +1

      Sneaky

    • I like your work James. $167.42 is a great deal considering the RT-AX58U is $299 at OW.

    • Well played. None in stock at Officeworks close to me otherwise I'd be doing the same. :(

    • What store? I can’t find any in sydney 🤪

      • Sorry, this was VIC

  • Genuine question, how is this one compare with Asus RT-AX56U router that was on sale earlier?

    • more antennas …. both are 2x2 this one has more aggregated bandwidth but that is just how many end points it can feed at high bandwidth ….the ax56 is 1800, this is 3000, so juggles more bands to more devices … might be issue in an office with 20 users, not sure about perceived performance at home unless sharehouse with 20 people …. gets to a point when numbers change but perceived performance doesn’t, like ssd in PCs ….

  • Waiting for wifi 7 then upgrade to premium wifi 6 lol, ac68u handles nearly everything perfectly, only thing its lacking is 2.5 or 10gb ethernet.

    • 2.5g ethernet …1G iis what we use on our office floor but we have 120 users across 4 APs and meeting rooms … cable ethernet is full duplex with very little overhead ….wireless has lots of overhead and is 1/2 duplex so 3G of wireless is about the same as 1G of cabled if moving data. between 2 devices …
