Microsoft Office (Windows XP or OSX) for NSW TAFE students

OK this deal would've been perfect:
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66910

The cheapest that I can find MS Office appears to be either $189 ( http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/cat/category… ) or $120 ( http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/pd/Office-… ) or ~$80 from ebay (from rather questionable sources)

Soooo…how would I go about acquiring it for less?

Other specifics:
- Digital download OK
- Employer does not have any deals.
(Additional specifications)
- Runs on either OS X Lion or Windows XP
- Costs ~$30

Purchasing directly from Microsoft Store is your best bet. You could also try the Office 14 Customer Preview here which I think should be unrestricted use until the release date.

Office (University edition) costs $99 from MS. This of course, requires university verification.

    • Ah yes, I saw that $99 edition. That would be tempting but TAFE != University, so I'm not sure I'd even qualify.

"Windows 7 or 8 required" for the Customer preview. I am using OSX and Windows XP so I couldn't run that anyway — but it'd be worth trying out!

  • Could you get away with open source? (openoffice, is google docs one? etc - dont know any more =D)
I haven't checked out the packages but in my final year eng at uni and haven't really needed more than just basic word and excel functions. If you really need to, there are computer labs you can use? Guessing .docx files compatible between these programs.

    • It's really more of a usability issue. For those of us who grew up with Office since 97 and then stuck with it until Office 2007, using Open Office felt like a downgrade and a slap in the face.

At least that's how I felt using OO 3.2. I don't know if their development team is going to work on a new interface and solve the various usability issues— it'd convince me to switch otherwise.

    • Yes you can get away with openoffice etc. However (as scrimshaw mentioned) it is a usability issue. It'd be much easier to open MS Word documents in MS Word, and MS Excel is actually pretty nice.

  • Would you be interested in buying a copy of microsoft office home and student 2010 for 70$ ish that I redeemed from this deal http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/72059 after buying my zenbook? =)

Its was shipped on the 20th so I should be getting it soon. Got all receipts for the zenbook

    • That is a nice offer. It is worth $189 new, so $70 is a good price. However MS Office doesn't mean much to me — I currently use open-source substitutes, however the convenience of having Office is worth about $30 to me :)
