Motorola G51 5G 128GB $244 (Was $349) + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

370

First time poster, so go easy

Jb's done it again, not really, not as good as the last deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/754093, but still seems like a good phone for the price. This time in Indigo Blue or Bright Silver.

I'm waiting for G82 to return to $200. I missed that bargain

    • +5

      Tis the benchmark.

      • T"was a Price error.

I had mine in cart, pulled the trigger and JB website said too bad sucker.

    • +2

Was a great buy. My son reckons his G82 is better for gaming than his mate's S20+. Big call

    • +3

I would have been ecstatic with this phone at $299 like it should have been. For $200 it is, pound-for-pound, the best phone I've ever owned.

    • I love mine. It is a great phone, so glad I got it for the $200.

  • Previous post "Was Price" on 31/01/2023 says $249.00 & now it's $349.00, go figure.

    • Still a bargain for 5g.

    • go figure.

Read the second comment on that post.

      The regular price is $399.

JB shows 'was' as the the previous ticketed price rather than the RRP.

    • Actually said it was a typo, was meant to be “Was Price” $319, still somehow the RRP price keeps going up :(. But for 244 not going to complain

    • Inflation??

  • +1

Damn, the day I get a Galaxy a73 for $499….

  • Is this a good buy that I can hold onto for a few years? Anything outstanding or worth mentioning for someone that’s got little knowledge on what makes a phone good? Cheers

    • +5

No more security updates from Nov 2023 so your phone may be at risk of being hacked (depends on what you are using the phone for)
      Also no more software updates

      From Motorola https://en-au.support.motorola.com/app/software-security-upd…

      Currently receiving regular security updates.
      Device launched on November, 2021
Security updates will stop on November, 2023

Motorola Moto G51 5G Android update status
      Currently: Android 12

When Motorola Moto G51 5G launched, it shipped with Android 11, but has since been updated to Android 12 (4 Jul 2022).

      • Is it normal for updates to stop just 2 years after release?

Should that stop me from buying it if that’s all there is to mention about it?

Don’t think I’m much of a target for hacks and I think I know enough to cover my own ass

        • It's normal for Motorola with its cheaper phone range

It's a good buy if you are after a cheapish phone that would still be useable for a few years

          • @trixieb: Good shit. Last question, I’ve been thinking of getting a Pixel 3 or 4, do you think I should stick to that or would this one do me better long term?
            Thanks for the help mate

            • +1

@maegajang: I don't know about Pixels but the price of this Motorola phone may drop to $199 as it was $199 in Jan and last year

              • @trixieb: Fairo, I’ll spend some time seeing what I can find and I’ll get this if I don’t find anything better, current phones going to shit so not planning to hold for sales.

    • Good for 5 years.

  • 10W isn't considered rapid charging.

  • +1

Typing on a G51 5G phone atm, lovely phone, long battery run time, nice 120Hz screen, good camera. On sale August 2022 for $199 used perks$10 to drop it to $189.

Sure it's not a S23 ultra but it serves me well.

Just wish it had a notification led. I use my laptop 100W USB-C charger for turbocharging and it's fast to charge up.

    • Specs in OP say it's got a notification LED?

      • Yes, but only operates when is phone off and charging, not when booted/running. Same for other Moto's I've owned. Strange, but true!

        • I wonder if a custom ROM would fix that. Seems like an insane oversight given its not an OLED panel.

  • The OPPO A54 with a 10W charger https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/oppo-a54-5g-64gb-fantasti… is $244 as well.
    Which one is better?

    • I choose Motorola for its near-stock Android experience
Edit: and the Karate chop flashlight

      • +5

I swear that karate chop action should be baked on android.

      • Yeah I'd prefer Motorola Android (which from when I last looked they make minimal/no changes to stock Android - remembering Motorola is owned by Google, no?)

I've got an OPPO and some of the things they've done to Android for their ColorOS I just don't like. Overly-aggressive app/battery management is probably the main one. Basically can't switch between apps and maintain the background app's state. >50% of the time when I switch back it's a fresh open of the app.

$314 for the Motorola Edge 20 Fusion 5G 128GB (Electric Graphite) with a 30W charger.
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/motorola-edge-20-fusion-5…

    • Is it worth the extra?

    • But MediaTek processor!
      Isn't that considered a no-go?

      EDIT
Has been $249 at JB Hifi previously.

      • Yeah bought my edge 20 fusion for $249

  • Can anyone comment on whether Boost plays nice with Motorola? I recall someone mentioning difficulties on another post, don't know whether this is just an isolated case.

    • +1

yeah I got the g82 and it never worked with my boost Sim. dunno if it's fixed yet. I've since sold the phone and left boost

    • +1

Doesn't sound like issue has been fixed
Affects some Boost SIMs and some Motorola G51, after the Android updates

    • +1

Not sure about the G82 but I have run Boost on my E20F and it went like a blur

    • +1

I'm on Boost as of Jan '23, it plays nice, i get 5g, VoIP works well, internet seems faster but this is my first 5G phone so nothing to compare against really. Notifications come in essentially instantly.

  • +1

Can confirm the I have not had any problems with my Moto G6 using a Boost SIM card

  • +2

How does this compare to the Redmi phones such as Note 10 Pro and Note 11 Pro. Thanks everyone.

  • +1

Should be the normal price IMO. Deals on phones in the 250-350 dollar range seem few and far between these days, even if you're willing to stretch to 400.
