I wish I waited longer, I got it for $249. It's a great phone for the price, good performance no lag compared to my previous G7.

    The disadvantages are:
    - Motorola seems to only do 2 os updates and this one has already had 2 so most likely will stay on Android 12.
    - Camera has lag although I think the picture quality is fine.
    - Speakers aren't stereo

    • +14

You may able to do a price match/guarantee and get the difference back in a gift card, if bought your one recently (14 days for most case)

      • Cheers, going to give this a go on live chat. I picked one up on Saturday for $249.

        • Please post how you go, I got mine 20 days ago so probably too late.

          • +27

@Rafski: They issued a partial refund of $50. Legends!

          • @Rafski: I missed out on the price match in case anyone is following, they said that they only do it for 14 days. Still a great phone for the price.

      • +9

Thanks sinosaur. I punched myself in the face on reading this post because I also bought a week ago for $249. Spoke to JB via chat and the $50 voucher is on its way. This is why I'm on Ozbargain.

        • No luck for me, was told to try in-store or call support…

          • +1

@Tink: Have another go with a different agent

          • +2

@Tink: Most guys in store are friendly. Otherwise, just told them you can literally buy a new one with $199, then return it directly with the $249 invoice which only one week old

            • @sinosoar: @GJT Thanks guys! Managed to get a partial refund via chat.

            • @sinosoar: Don't the receipts for phones have the IMEI/serial number, so the phones items don't match?

              • @kururii: good point :-), not sure for that. Been received price difference for other things, not mobile phone

    • -6

My Moto Edge Fusion didn't get 12 so I ditched it. (No dualsense compatibility without 12).

      • -2

Rafski, please stop with the fanboyism.

        • Sorry I miss read your comment (that's why I deleted my comment an hour ago). I thought you asked if the G51 has Android 12.

    • Better than the Motorola Edge 20 Fusion still on Android 11

  • +2

Specs look promising but 30 hours of battery life? Sounds like you need a plug in by breakfast time.

    • +25

Harsh comment, all the JB reviews rave about how good the battery life is. Wish I could say the same about my $1400 samsung phone…

    • +4

I can confirm the battery lasts longer than my S10.

    • +8

30 hrs battery life is good nowadays lol.

    • +10

      how long are your days!?

      • +14

lgacb08 has a holiday house on Mercury.

    • Normal use people plug their phone in to charge every night.

Even iphones last that long… I don't see their earnings forecast impacted by this…

      • -3

Best not to charge your phone overnight, apparently it reduces the battery life.

        • +1

It's nothing to do with charging overnight. It's bad for a Lithium battery to sit at >75% or <25% charge for long periods. It will cause battery degradation.

    • +1

I got this a month ago, battery life is a strength.

Two light days or a bit more than one day of heavy use off a full charge easy.

    • I can go 2 days without charging.

  • +6

Picked up a G50 5G for the same price a few months back and thought it was a steal.

But then the bugs came. Worst experience with bugs on a phone I've had in years. Streaming apps often glitch (normally after turning the phone sideways) normally requiring a restart to fix. The phone locks up and restarts once or twice a week. And it doesn't play nice with moving between mesh points on my Google Wifi, with wifi seeming to lock up once or twice a day at a minimum.

Wife has exactly the same issues.

    • So I guess their Edge series will be much better? As I havent heard my son complaining about this Edge20 Fusion about streaming issue …

      • my daughter has edge fusion 20, less then 2 months the finger print scanner is gone…but too hard to backup the phone to bring it in for warranty. Not a good experience.

        • What backing up do you need to do? Isn't pretty much everything in Google?

      • I have the 20 and it only does this when using foxtel app.

Happy with the phone in general, camera is meh even though it has 1.21 gigapixels

For the price, I can't complain

    • Is your G50 5G different to this G51 5G? Or would they have the same issues?

      • Different phone, but don't know if the software would be better on the G51.

I used to be a big fan of Motorola G series as being great bang for buck, and they really don't have much competition now. But not sure if I want to risk it again after my last experience.

Prior to the G50 I had a Pixel 3a XL, and I had a bad experience with bugs on that handset as well (particularly with Bluetooth). Again my wife had the same phone and the exact same issues so it wasn't just me.

    • I got my G50 5G from JB just prior to a trip, used it for a month or two and then traded into with the JB deal for the S22. I expected it to decent but it was buggy and i didn't want to use it for a couple of years.

    • I have the G50 too and have had no issues, touch wood

    • I didnt have bugs for mine, but I found out the hard way the g50 isnt waterproof or water resistant at all. Just a quick rinse under the sink as I spilt some drink on it (excluding the usb c charging port) knocked it out for a few days. As in it wouldnt charge or turn on. Put the phone under rice for a week, turned it on and it finally turned on but it took another week for the sound to actually work again. I was literally watching videos without sound 💀

      • My main complaint would be that its not very bright in bright light and i sometimes struggle to read stuff on the screen properly outdoors

      • +1

Lol sheel be right just rise it under the tap mate.

        • +4

Instructions unclear. My water damaged phone is now wrapped in seaweed sheet with some salmon and avocado.

          • @xoom: Nooooo, you're meant to wrap yourself in seaweed with salmon and avocado.

            • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Instructions unclear. Now im smoking weed while downing an avocado smoothie.

  • +1

Great specs but not sure if I can go back to an IPS LCD.

  • Okay, what's the catch here? Seems to be great specs but lukewarm response.

    • +4

Catch is it isn't a flagship phone for $199.

      • It isnt the 4k 240Hz screen with 64GB RAM, 2TB storage for $199? No deal.

        /s

      Motorola

      • -1

Exactly. +1 for the deal because you can't go wrong on that price range.

I used two Motorola G series phones from Motorola AU deals posted here, both died almost immediately after 12 months - one with display issues (faulty board?) and the second one with intermittent lags. Strangely enough Motorola doesn't care to repair it after 12 months of warranty. May be they never heard of ACCC or ACL. Anyway, it was our secondary phone kept at home so didn't bother much to chase the Motorola support team other than sending a few emails. I mean its not worth the hassle if you plan to use it as your main phone. I'd stay away

        • My 2 G series mobiles from Deals here years ago - are in daily use.

Motorola does repair beyond 12 months. They did it for me. Posted about it in another deal. Just needed to upload photos / video as proof of issue.

        • Motorola doesn't care to repair it after 12 months of warranty

          Checked my emails:
          Bought G7+ in Deal 2/07/19

Just before end of warranty, had charging problems - was sent free charger & cable.

Almost 2 years after purchase (April 2021), complained a few times battery was failing.

          Received (20/4/21):
I'm sorry to know that you haven't heard any updates regarding your case. As per checking with our higher support, they approved for one time repair using the approved code: LA#######B. I'm done also booking the phone for assessment.

          Repaired free - battery replaced.

both died almost immediately after 12 months

Still used as main phone. Looks & works as new. Battery holds charge well. But after over 3 years constant use - considering upgrade.

          • -1

@INFIDEL: Good onya mate if you are getting a better support from Motorola now. Things might have changed since bad old days.

But again, I don't know if you are a Motorola bot or agent Tbh. So, here is the transcript of my G5 plus saga. I have removed my name/mobile numbers from it. I am still looking for the transcript of my second Motorola case. Will post it as soon as I get it.

From below response from Motorola support team, it's made very clear that Motorola wouldn't do any free repair, support or refund past 12 months of purchase.

            Hi Jess,

Could you please clarify your statement: “ we only have a 12-month manufacturer's warranty”

Does that mean Motorola provides only 12 months warranty for all mobile phones in Australia and hence refusing to repair my mobile phone?

            Kind regards,
            [My Name]

            Hi Team,

Please find the attached proof of purchase.

Australian consumers are entitled to remedies such as a refund, replacement or repair, at no cost to the consumer .
            https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

Australian Consumer Law is applicable to all online stores including that of Motorola , which sells products and services in Australia .

As per Australian government’s independent authority ACCC (Australian Competition and
Consumer Commission), “ the handset must do what it is supposed to do and meet a level of quality and performance appropriate to the phone's price ”.
            https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/consumer-rights-and-mo…

In my case, it is not expected that a smartphone like Motorola G5 plus which was sold at RRP $449 will be dead
            ……

            • +3

@DAT: As I said - needed to make a few requests before they agreed. Backed up with photos of issue. Motorola's response acknowledges their delay - requiring approval from superiors.

That was last year, 2 years after your issue. Support likely have improved.

And like anything - a different approach, to a different person can make all the difference!

Importantly, depends on problem requiring repair. Mine was most likely a manufacturing fault. I stressed that point. Motorola agreed, after viewing the photos. So covered under ACL. Not all faults are covered!

We had different faults & different experiences with support.

But past experiences don't necessarily prove anything as you claim, or indicate future problems for those buying this phone.

don't know if you are a Motorola bot or agent

If you had checked how long I have been a member here, you might not make such an allegation!
11 years is a long time to wait just to post a different view about Motorola support…
Mods take a dim view of unfounded accusations!

If that was your approach to Motorola Support… No wonder they weren't supportive😉
Getting angry rarely achieves what you want.

I used to love Motorola phones. Then they went downhill fast. Got buggy and while they were useable, just found myself regretting my decisions. See comment above from @kapone. Both he (or she) and his (or her) wife having the same issues is not a good sign.

      • +1

Because they've never grown out of their Razr just like Blackberry. Luckily the Chinese bought them out but who knows how long Lenovo gonna pump money in for.

Not AMOLED screen and single speaker. Gee.. Got negged for telling the negatives. I own one and happy with it

    • Screen is too big for me. If it were an inch less I'd probably buy it for a backup.

      • +11

And some people wish they have an inch or two bigger

        • Screen, not your manhood…joke getting old

      • I'm used to it by now but I must admit when I first got mine I felt it was too big.

Don't know why there are no 5.5" mid range options it seems. They're all aspiring to 7 inches it seems.

  • Hmmm… Would this be better overall than my Samsung a51…?

  • +7

One thing to be aware of, is that people (me included) have found that their G51 no longer works with Boost sim cards after upgrading the G51 to Android 12. There is some discussion about it on Whirlpool.

The phones worked fine with Boost on Android 11, but as soon as it is updated to Android 12 the boost sim no longer works. Motorola says that the phone is fine and Boost says there is nothing wrong with the sim. This has happened to the thee G51s in my family. Have tried reflashing firmware, trying new Boost sims, usual fault finding, etc, but Boost still won't work after Android 12 update. Other sims, including Telstra and Telstra reseller (Woolies) work fine, its only Boost sim that causes the issue.

    • Been a looooooong time since I’ve messed with android, but that sounds like a radio issue. Maybe have a look on the XDA forums.

      • what doesn't work? you tell me!

        • +2

I am only taking a guess here trying to help out. But with firmware updates, the radio or frequency of the phones can be updated too. Possibly with the update something changed that Boost needs to run well… I had a similar issue back in the day when I use to always root my android phone and mess around with it. Just a wild guess, hoping it points those having issues in the right direction. I would look at the XDA forums for help. Someone much smarter than me might be able to sort it out.

Some light reading on frequency bands below.

          https://www.deviceranks.com/en/phone/bands/17974/motorola-mo…

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for that link…
            …nice chart on Deviceranks.com
but also wish that data was available for Australia

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: haha my bad dude, was a reference to the old threads on XDA for custom ROMs which would have stuff along the lines of "what works: radio, maaybe wifi", "what doesnt work: you tell me!!"

            • @harro112: Hahah oh shit, my bad lol. I do remember some of the threads starting off good, then the devs cracking it with silly questions haha. Great times, though. Nowadays so risky to even think of rooting your phone. How times have changed.

    • +1

Read the comments about this on Whirlpool as well. Seems like a persistent issue with only 1 other user (?) having luck. Boost is such a go to for many of us. Breaks the deal unfroutantely if there isn't a resolution for this, for those of us that use Boost.

    • +1

here is the Whirlpool thread — https://whrl.pl/Rgt81z
which describes issues with Boost 5G after automatic Android 12 upgrades.

So, to play it safe with Boost 5G (trial),
turn off automatic / 'smart' updates.

Worth it for the karate-chop action torch function. Seriously, every phone should have this.

I legit don't know if I can go back to non-motorola phones now without this feature which I use daily.

    • also known as the Chuck-Norris-kick torch function

My last Motorola has pretty bad connectivity issues with wifi and network. A similar low budget Samsung sitting beside me on the same network or wifi connection has no issues.

Check the bands of your network, but for 199 you can't really complain too much

    • my G8 pretty much goes one month on and one month off with my home network. but visit places and it works on wifi every time.

      • Mines a G9 plus, I tried Nokia last time, was an issue with the compass and google maps, took a year to fix. Both nice phones, but will be sticking to Samsung for updates and connectivity, saving a few hundred isn't worth the issues I'm having with other manufacturers.

  • +2

Tempted to get one as a 5G hotspot.

    • Be aware that if you plan to use this phone like that for an extended period of time you may experience decreased battery performance and (in my case) battery expansion after approximately 5-6 months. I bought a cheap Motorola Edge 5G for this purpose and learned out the hard way.
