  • The older moto G phones had speakers that had contact attachments that would bend over time and detach. Either an expensive repair or a DIY job to open it up and bend them back till the next time it happened. My wife's phone was a nightmare. That was maybe 4 or 5 years ago now so I can't remember the exact model but I was so glad when we ditched it.

    • You would think (hope) that they've fixed design flaws like that.

      • Was present in 3 generations that I know of. Stopped looking at Motos.

  • How is the camera on this thing? Its 50mp, but does it take decent photos?

  • Done. Just ordered to replace my sister's Nokia 7 Thanks OP

What's a good case for this as she likes a case for her phones. Looked at a few on eBay but just thought I would ask before buying. Thanks

Great deal. $189 if you use JB Perks (free to sign up)

Typing this on the new phone. Got this as a secondary device and this is a great value for money device.

If you are on the fence grab this bargain while you can.

The phone comes with a transparent case on our off the box. Can't say if a screen protector is on or not. Ordered one on eBay anyway. Got the blue colour and it is nice.

The only problem is that AdGuard is not working in Chrome due to Google's policy

    • +1

Use Vivaldi. No problem with Adguard.

      • Firefox should be ok to block ads too.

  • How to install gcam on this phone?

    • +1

Here's the version of gcam that works, apparently. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12745336/redir

I haven't tried it yet, and don't know how to install it either (yet). When I get the phone I'll find out - unless someone here is good enough link instructions.

      • +1

It's a .apk file which is an Android installer. You just need to get the file onto the device (eg download it using the phone) and open it, and it will install. Android will complain about security but you just need to allow "install unknown apps" in the main settings. Once installed it will appear in your app drawer like any other app.

        • Thanks for that, much appreciated.

  • Just got it for effectively $173.80 with JB Hi-Fi Perks plus the 8% gift card bonus on Shopback for JB-Hi Fi. Have $11 left over on the gift card to use on something else.

    • Is it.mandatory to do mobile number verification for perks?

    • Shopback cashback is 2.5% now. Did the 8% expire yesterday?

      • +2

        Username doesn't check out😉

Gone, but better $50 bonus + normal cashback with $350 gift cards @SB is about to start for some!
Buying swap gift cards with 2% cashback = $57 saved = 16.3% cashback!!

        So $199 - $10 perks - $30.80 cashback = $158.20!!

      • Yes, it was from 6pm until they ran out or midnight as I recall.

Thanks OP. My friend needed new inexpensive phone so I suggested him this last night and he picked it up in morning. He’s really happy with it. I was tempted too so i picked one for me too and with perks it comes to 189.99.

Got one to replace Pixel 3XL for $189 thanks op

  • Any regrets on buying g51 over edge 30?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/727895

    • +1

I would have gone for the Edge 30, but I'm happy with the G51. Edge 30 is a level above, I would think the camera is better and the CPU benchmarks are better too, more RAM.

    • Edge 30's screen size is smaller.

      • Edge 30 is more robust with Gorilla Glass
        But no 3.5mm socket…

Checked both instore, ready to buy.

        Using gift cards G51 $158.20

Couldn't decide, so sticking with my trusty G7+ for a while longer. Motorola replaced the battery free. Performing & looks like new.

Better, lighter build. Not a plastic feel. Fits pockets.
Robust with aluminium frame, with Gorilla Glass front & back. True Dual SIM + Micro SD. But only 64GB vs 128GB.
Smaller screen (6.2"), but slightly higher screen pixel density. Processor speed is ok for my use. (And don't need 5G, yet)
Battery lasts me a day. With fast charging (unlike G51), quickly topped up from powerbank.

Use it as stereo speaker on travels. Sounds good, unlike reviews of G51 mono speaker as "tiny & tinny" - suited only to notifications. Don't want to carry extra Bluetooth speaker.

2 things i found really cool with this phone.
Someone pointed out earlier before, the flick gesture to turn on/off flash light is useful, but another one is the ability to control Spotify Prev/Next track with Vol up/down (holding), whilst screen is off is so useful. I've always hated having to turn on my phone screen whenever I wanted to play next track. I'm sure it's possible to get an app todo this, but the native integration is pretty neat.

Also it has inbuilt Dolby Atmos integration. I had a wireless Bose Soundsport lying around, tested it and can genuinely say it sounds maybe 10-15% better. Slightly increased bass/clarify.
It's also quite snappy. Very happy with this phone. The price is a steal. Only negative is probably the lack of updates.

Was comparing my good old LG v50 still beats this one except battery

That Quad DAC, dual screen, and SD 855+ still solid to this day

  • Snap this up as I believe it's a good value phone (Coming from a redmagic6 pro16gb ram snapdragon 888 - cracked screen) Man it was the best decision for me as I find the interface of the g51 is so much more streamline and smoother….I would never ever get a redmagic phone cos it's software updates are shocking and the os is buggy.

G51 speaker is not stereo but the headphones jack is handy. I saw the edge 30 deal but thought if Its not worth the extra $150 for lower battery duration as I rather have it last longer in the long run and if this was to be damage I could just buy another/upgrade one without hurting my pocket later on.

Happy with the purchase here. ;)

  • Deal ends tonight?

  • Went to JB, had a look a very big phone very long slab….

Been told by jbhifi staff deal ends 10 October.

Earlier comments, some were having issues with Boost. Took the risk, and bought one. Inserted SIM, did all the updates and no issues. My partner bought one as well, same process (inserted SIM and updated) and no issues as well. Both on Boost. So far, no complaints.

    • Thanks bought this phone for my sister and also porting her to Boost, so that's good to know

  • Anyone ever used this? Wonder if it would be worth it as the cost is almost the phone itself.

"Mobile Extras 12 month plan $49

    What’s included:

Swap out your phone any time for any reason for a like-for-like brand new replacement subject to a service fee.*

    New Phone Service fee $129.00"

You answered your own question. If this phone break just use a backup phone until a similarly good deal come around.

Phone tech are only ever getting better every year so getting the same phone in 12 months would be a downgrade. Why would you commit yourself to that?

my edge fusion 20 just got an Android 12 update. liking moto right now.

  • For those wondering, this phone can be updated to Android 12. I had to go through a few manual security updates to OS11 to get to it. Probably par for the course.

I also had a few connection glitches, particularly after updating to OS12 but I get that where I am anyway, especially with my Nord VPN. All's good after app (vpn and wifi) tweaking, resets and sys restarts.

The GCam version mentioned earlier - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12745336/redir - works fine, haven't tested it beyond that though.

All in all a very nice 5g (if I ever need it) backup phone for the money.

Got the phone today,. Just to replace my faulty Huawei Mate 10 pro and wait for some deal on Christmas.
Never expect this one will be better than mate 10 pro. But I was wrong! Snappy so far, bigger screen. A bit heavier, but not a problem. Fingerprint unlock fast, face unlock no problems. Camera is ok! Clean Android! 5G supported.
Suddenly don't see any reason to replace it in a year. Very happy with G51.

  • good price for a 5g phone shame its gone back up to $349

  • Anyone coming back to this thread re: Boost 5G SIM issues, Motorola will fix in an interim update shortly. From Whirlpool.

  • @Rafski can you please let us know if this is going to be on sale again? Sometime this month or in Nov?

    • Sorry I don't work for JB, I just noticed it online and posted last time. I think if you wait for a bit it will go down again, it has been $199 twice that I know of.
