Bought this for my MIL last time it was $199 and she's stoked with it. There's definitely nothing close in this price range. The SD chip is a big tick over Samsung's low-mid range exynos chips which are very meh.

  • i'm curious, is this an upgrade over a Samsung S10+? thinking of buying one for my mum to replace her s10+

    • +1

Depends. If she's only doing simple stuff it'll be fine, but the S10+ will be significantly more powerful. Also going from an AMOLED screen to LCD would be tough for some people.

      • Tnx for the reply, she would just send Watsapp messages and take photos, not very tech savvy, and wont notice the screen. Her S10 battery has seen better days, being what, 3+ years old? This is why I am considering it

        • +1

Yeah, if she isn't doing anything processor intensive it should be fine.

Great phone for $200 , just started using mine from the last jb deal , worth getting extra warranty at JB if using it as a hotspot , and chewing through the battery hard .
    (based on previous g8+,g5+ use)

Good glass screen protectors can be had on AliExpress ,
but 2 month wait with snail mail .

Works just fine for me , but it's big , but also not too heavy.

Buy it - Don't buy it
I'm sure there will be a new model out any minute and on sale soon enough ..

    • Just got this phone! Could you share the link for your screen protector? Also, did you get a case? Thanks!

      • +4

        Here's a local AU link selling 2 x glass protectors for the Moto G51 5G at $4.99
        - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/192589413964

If you order today, you should receive it, within 3 working days.

Also, recommend buying 2 pieces always
(so that you have 1 on standby )

        • +1

A bargain for 2x and Aus

      • +3

No haven't ordered any cases yet as it comes with one , but everything is there on AliExpress if you search and always better value than eBay.
Three glass screen protectors for $5 ect , even better when theres coupon codes going.
Sorry no links , too old to learn this.

  • Anyone know/heard of/has a custom ROM for this phone?

    • Nothing on XDA so I'm guessing no.

    • There's none available.

    • Was hoping it has a custom rom for it too. Really helps extend the life of the phone especially if you upgrade and keep old ones as a backup.

  • +1

Where are all the SD card slot phone guys? This is your time.

    • Checking in. It has that so… Checking out?

    • Reporting in. It has sd card slot? Nice. Exiting stage left.

    • It's interesting low end phones has sdcard slot whereas midrange doesn't

      • Flagships dont either. Which should be the otherway around. The more you pay. The more features you should get.

  • I have one as a spare phones, works well.

  • +3

This was already a great buy before -$50
I see no reason to buy a xiaomi anymore from overseas

    • +3

JB used to sell Xiaomi phones, a shame they don't anymore. Still using the awesome Xiaomi Mi 9T.

  • I got the G50 5G for $199 few months ago also from JB, i assume this is an upgrade from that? No complaints here, nice phone, good battery

  • +1

does it come with any of the free clear casing?

    • +1

Cybershack's review said it came with a clear bumper case.

    • +1

It comes with a clear case, yes.

    • Yup

An absolute bargain at this price! I bought it yesterday for $249 and JB will refund me the difference today! I am moving up to this from the Oppo A52, but this phone destroys it! At $199 I can confidently say that there is no other phone that comes close to it at that price!|

The Oppo screen picked up fingerprints and finger oil and dirt something shocking. The G51's screen remains crystal clear and it much brighter. Mono speaker but voices and music are loud and clear. Dolby Atmos means excellent stereo headphone and bluetooth music. It has a headphone jack port. I have inserted a 128gm memory card. Everything works well, scrolls smoothly and opens fast! Great video playing ability. Cameras are good for the price. Could not be happier owning this budget phone for $199!

92/100 an excellent review. Best phone under $399 (March 2022!)

The Moto G51 Is A Steal At $399 (March 2022!)

  • I have an Oppo A52, would this be substantially faster?

  • +1

whats the cheapest 5g plan out there?

    • +2

      All Vodafone prepaid includes 5G

    • +2

Boost pre-paid is now doing 5G

      • thanks, i have boost prepaid. do i need a new 5g simcard?

        • There are some problems with Boost SIM in this phone apparently.

          See https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/30x18j6j.

          • @sridhar: I purchased 2 phones for my parents last week who are on amaysim. I am on boost. I updated their phones to android 12 this morning and used my boost Sim on one of their phones. It seems to work fine without any issues. I did make a call and speak for few mins and it seems to work fine.

      • Boost 5G is trial only
and expected to finish in November 2022.

(though, they might just extend it
but no guarantees of that either).

  • +1

    Any good for gaming?

  • That's very cheap price

  • Last Motorola my partner had caused ongoing issues with Telstra due to its failed Dual Sim management (had to ask for amendments on the bill every month). After switching to a Pixel that was no longer the case.

They are good basic phones, but at that price point, similar to a Nokia I owned for a short while, there are some issues that annoy you in day to day life.

  • So can I run 2x 5g Sims on this phone?

Looking for a cheap dual Sim phone.

    • +3

It says dual sim, assuming it is same as G50 in that you can either run 2 sims or 1sim and 1 sd card (but not 2 sims and an sd card). They couldnt tell me for sure until i bought it and they opened it to set it up for me but thats what it ended up being (G50)

      • Yeah, the G51 is like that (hybrid sim) - you can either use 2 sim cards, or 1 sim and 1 SD card.

  • Is the battery life as bad as the reviews make it appear? Looking at swapping a Redmi 5 Plus with this.

  • +1

    Thanks OP!

  • +1

First hand review from someone who has had this phone was that the pictures are not that clear even under different settings and come up a bit dark, which points to likely a inferior camera sensor. Will give this a miss. Similar price range phones from Samsung and Oppo have much better results.

    • Yeah oppo reno is good

  • Don't follow phones much but i have a Moto G9+, battery lasts 2 days no problem or 1+ with HEAVY use. If not using 5G would batt life be better on this? Don't have 5G plan don't need it

  • +3

    Here's a wallet case if anyone's looking: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/125088212477

    comes with a screen protector.

  • How does this compare to the Edge 20 Fusion (ignoring price, currently waiting for Edge 20 Fusion to be back around $249 again)?

    • +1

Same here waiting edge 20 fusion, 23 gram lighter is the biggest difference.

    • +1

      Advantage: OLED screen
      Disadvantage: MediaTek chip

  • Wow, 5G + long battery life + NFC…too good to be true…what's the catch here?

  • Being using this phone for about 2 months. Great phone with such low cost.

Note that, this phone is not water proof. So be careful.

If you want a S22 Ultra, buy this phone, trade in on JB Trade Up for $80 + $350 discount vouchers for S22 Ultra. Wait for S22 Ultra discount before 30th Oct!

    • +1

      $80 + $350 discount vouchers

Can you share more details? $80 by JB for trade-in and $350 by Samsung?

  • Thanks..bought

  • So tempted to replace this with my current LG Velvet which I got for $289 but not sure if the battery size and refresh rate are worth losing everything else that's superior about it (probably not).

  • +10

Great phone for the price android users are spoilt and i can only reccomend never spend more than $300 on a phone that way you lose it break the screen just buy another, the number of people every week at work who cry about a 1k+ phone lost or completly smashed amazed me esp when most people dont use 90% of a expensive phones capabilities anyway.

    • Absolutely, well said.

    • +1

      Its all about the flex.

    • Really don't understand how people smash their phones, I drop my phone multiple times a day, but then again I always use a case.

Never buying a Motorola again, g8+ got 1 OS upgrade, and no VoLTE support.

      • My phone's been pretty indestructible in it's slim tpu case and glass screen protector.

  • +3

    Here’s a link to a “in-depth” review

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Motorola-Moto-G51-5G-smartphon…

Hope it helps anyone considering buying this smartphone :-)

    • Not the Australian model. Links elsewhere to 2 local reviews are more helpful.

  • Is the price difference between this and the Poco 5G or Redmi 5g series phones worth it? Talking about the ones that have gone for around the $350 - worth getting the Xiaomi's over this?

  • Worth getting this if I've already got the Samsung Galaxy A32 from the early August deal?

  • Anyone have experience using this device as a 5G portable hotspot?

  • Bought it in June for 299 :(

    • How's the phone (if you disregard the price)?

      • +3

        Pros:
        - Decent battery lasts for whole day on heavy use (social media, web surfing)
        - NFC (lol my last phone did have this op)
        - Build is strong as I drop it several times and yet to have any crack
        Cons:
        - It does not have fast charge
        - Either I use my phone too much or its size is too big for my hand, I get a sore thumb
        - Camera quality is below average.

        • Surprised it doesn't have fast charge.

At least it has a compass, unlike my g9+.

          • @kiitos: It's one of the compromises going from the g# series to the g5# series phones. Warned about this last $199 Deal.

This model has been superseded - with features put back like fast charging & stereo speakers.

        • Con: FHD only not pleasing to my eyes unfortunately

        • Build is strong as I drop it several times and yet to have any crack

G51 is heavier than my older Moto & has weaker plastic frame & back. Certainly not that strong.
A major reason I didn't buy. I've cracked too many screens, even with case & screen protector.

Warning of high cost if drop & cracks

Edge 30 has Gorilla Glass 3. Been using Moto with GG3 for 3 years without case (just included bumper case) or screen protector - looks like new. Has saved me money.

  • Any custom ROM for this?

    • Non (yet?) in xda.

  • Thanks, nabbed one.

    • So the cops not after you?

  • For the owners of one can i ask, can the navigation buttons be reordered?

Also what colour is better blue or silver

    • Nope, only switch between gesture and 3-button navigation, in L-to-R: back-home-taskswitcher

  • Anyone find a cheap screen protector for this phone? I don't think I will worry about a case or tempered glass for such a cheap phone.

  • Can we use the JB Perks to bring this down $10 ?
