30-40% off Powertools: Katana Drill Driver Kit 18V $35.99, WORX Drill & Impact Driver Kit 20V 10mm $156 & More @ Supercheap Auto

120

DIY noob here. I don't even know the difference between impact, hammer and std drill. I'm on the market for a cheap one for the odd hole (and cleaning car carpets, mostly). Should I get that 1st one? Or will it be a dud all too soon?

UPDATE: I got the Katana Drill & Impact Driver Kit. I would've gotten the single regular drill one for $36, but the closest one was +1h drive away from me. Thanks for all the advice.

Oh no, you need a Milwaukee or Dewalt for doing that. With a minimum 6ah battery

Yeah that will be fine. For the $36 I'd take the punt and see if it does the job before you spend more on it. At worst you lose $36 but for what you've described it will do the job for you (you can then upgrade later if you need or want to).

One thing to consider is if you want to buy into an ecosystem so if you want other cordless tools (eg leaf blower) then what options are available to you. What this means is that you can use the battery from your drill on other stuff. This is a 2ah battery so it's not going to be powering anything more than a drill for very long.

    • Thanks, @Gunnar. Interestingly, I was looking at their leaf blower just now (not bc I'll get one anytime soon, but bc it's the only other Katana post here).

I'll probably get the drill + impact driver combo, not bc I think I need both but simply bc the lone drill is over an hour drive's from me (so I'll end up spending the difference on petrol). Now, I just saw WORX has the same for just $18 more. WORX or Katana? I assume it's 30% more expensive for a reason; quality or just branding?

both worx and katana have very similar quality, both cheap Chinese stuff that do the job just fine for most households but don't expect them to last very long if you run them for hours every weekend.

If you live in a house with a backyard etc, than its probably better to wait for a deal on PXC or Ryobi since they have a much larger range so you can use their gardening tools with the same battery as well.

        • I do have a backyard, but I see on their website Katana also has gardening tools too: lawnmower, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, line trimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower… What else do PXC and Ryobi have?

In your situation I would get the Katana. It's cheaper and the batter is slightly better (1.5ah vs 2ah).

If you find that it's not good enough I'd get something more upmarket. You're not spending a great deal of money in the grand scheme of things.

For what it's worth I would do a bit more than you with my gear and have this drill combo (well minus the fancy case).

It is very much overkill but I went Dewalt because of the ecosystem (I have a drill, impact driver, impact wrench, leaf blower and tyre inflator). Knowing what I know now I would have gone cheaper but hey I've made my bed and I'm happy with what I have.

While this is a good price for a cheap drill kit, if I was op I would wait for a deal on PXC or Ryobi (or even Aldi.)
Getting stuck into one of these generic ecosystems just seems like it would lead to regret.
(Heck, I somewhat regret originally getting into Hitachi.)

Not sure you could call Katana generic. They're part of Kincrome and have a pretty decent range on their website so would be much easier to add a tool later compared to the Aldi availability lottery.

Pricing looks like a steal on Supercheap. I'm already heavily invested in Ryobi One+ so it's not for me, but it's hard to look past at $60 for the drill pack.

Anyone got Katana tools and can comment? Could only see a single review on YouTube

      • Thanks for that review, @AaronR; I couldn't find any others either (just Katana infomercials). Other than the grinder, it seems he's really happy with the Katana's, and find them comparable to Makita, for a lot less money (even at RRPs).

Here is a link to Katana Tools website. They seem to have a decent range in 18v and have a good warranty.
Distributed by Kincrome so should be safe if you have any problems.

I am not in any way associated but thought this info might help. Personally I own mainly Makita, some Ryobi and Ozito PXC.

The polishers certainly don't work out to 40% off, more like 30%

For the odd job around the house that's not a bad kit to get most people through.

    • Dummit, thanks (minus the $2 cb from SB 😃).

    • Clicked and collected.

Regular drill spins, impact drill spins harder, hammer drill also bashes the back of the drill bit forward and back as it spins.

Not that you are wrong but just to be clearer:

"impact drill spins harder" sounds a little like it just has more turning force.

For those that dont know about an impact driver its that the tuning is done basically by hammering.

Much easier to understand with video: https://youtu.be/xQzqNnWG21s?t=309

Not just does this let it turn with much more force but when using somehting like a typical Philips head the bit gets a chance to reseat after every impact. The constant turning using a regular drill means you are far more likely to have the head jump out and wreck the screw.

A hammer drill has a mechanism in the drill that makes the whole chuck bounce back and forward (more of a forwards/backwards vibration in comparison to a proper SDS drill).
https://i.imgur.com/E8cvOGB.png (there are a few different ways to do this but the effect is similar)

An SDS drill on the other hand literally hammers the back of the drill bit.

  • What is a STD drill?

    • +1

Standard; a drill driver (as opposed to an impact drill or a hammer drill).
