All current guides I could find mention using UART and the devices page states the below and multiple devs in the project have stated the base firmware is “very shady”. As I see it the device is not consumer ready for OpenWrt, just for tinkering

  • How much improvement is this router from xiaomi ax3600?
    I have two of ax3600 on mesh (wifi) but lately my devices are getting msg "connected without internet". My pc which is directly connected to the main router always connected.

    Thinking maybe one of them is dying and replaced it with this router

    ACTIVE COOLING. I wouldn’t trust a non-asus router without this. With heat dissipation taken care of, this is a beast of a router

    You can have all the specs and speeds but when things get hot all shit hits the fan..

        I have not had experience with this particular router. In my experience, everything eventually succumbs to heat and fails to reach the specifications./throughput.
        Heat will cause either permanent damage and temporary failures.

        For example; running a phone on a 5g with a wifi 6 hotspot… I’d have at least; shade, 300mm clearance from anything, no case and a fan clearing the stagnant heat produced.

        I’m pedantic about heat in an electrical circuit and absolutely steadfast about keeping electronics from damage due to heat soak. Either control and monitor the temperature or expect any equipment to run at a reduced capacity, eventually you will need to replace the equipment.

        Its fun to test things but I wouldn’t expect the equipment to perform at its rating. Everything from an RC motor, controllers, Lithium batteries, bearings, chains, lubricants, metals. Temperature changes everything and you can consider it during planning or deal with it during use

          I access the internet though an android phone usb tethered to my WiFi router 24/7. Have recently installed a root app through magisk called ACC which allows for setting the maximum charge limit, charging to/from %, charging current and temperature parameters which allow/do not allow charging.

          Highly recommended for anyone that does the same, or wishes to prolong the device health of any that are used constantly.

    I have a Netgear XR1000 I've never really liked
    - mostly due to the DumaOS UI which is clunky AF - will this do anything it can't?

      yeh I also have the XR1000 and the GUI is crap AF.

      I only bought it when it was on special $299 when it claimed to be $599 RRP

    • The AX9000 will have a lot better wifi - more bands, more channels, more antennas for further and stronger coverage.
      Probably the only thing it doesn't have is functionality as a VPN server.

      Yes. All wifi 6 routers are backward compatible (for wifi 5 and wifi 4 devices).

    I assume the 10000 won't be in English Other then using chromes translate webpage feature is there any issues with using the 10000 with it's Chinese firmware. Then I can get this ax9000 and mesh them. Thanks

    • People have used the AX9000 Chinese version with chrome translate, so there should be no issues doing the same with the 10000.

      Keep in mind, the 10000 is about $650AUD delivered from Ali Express atm.

    I am running the CN version of this router with Openwrt at the moment, the fan drivers have issues and don't actually work on Openwrt. (until they figure it out, but they've been trying since 2021, issues relating Qualcomm/Xiaomi not releasing drivers properly or something).

    Just beware if you try to run Openwrt on the international version, there's been multiple cases now where there's just something slightly off in terms of the partition size allocations that Openwrt seems to fail to install. Some users have reportedly fixed it by "unpacking" the install into a different partition but it sounded a bit technical.

    FYI I've never used the original xiaomi firmware so can't comment on how good/bad the firmware is.

    Also Openwrt has enabled all radios on the device for use so you get effectively 4 radios to parition and muck around with IOT/Guest wlan etc etc.

    Openwrt snapshots went live i think early Jan and it's been really stable for me so all good! I was running QCA compiled "openwrt" firmware since early last year, everything's been stable for my use cases.

  • With my ASUS AX6000 RT-AX88U (running the latest version of Merlin), I have hit a limitation where it only shows the first 64 MAC addresses.

    OP, do you know if similar limitations exist with this Xiaomi AX9000 router?

      Yes, the Xiaomi AX9000 can only handle up to 248 devices.

        The question is will you be able to see all of the active MAC addresses via the device management UI?

        For the ASUS routers using the latest Merlin firmware, you can still have more than 64 devices connect to the router (via the different interfaces). But it will only displays 64 MAC addresses within the GUI. Hopefully, I won't have this issue with this Xiaomi AX9000 model.

  • Some advice if possible.
    Been holding out for a $550 or less ASUS ROG AX11000 but this looks tempting.
    I have an R7000 netgear nighthawk that runs the ASUS firmware (ported) and rock solid. Been running for years.

    But this looks like a worthy deal for the next few years, and maybe a wait for wifi 7 as interim buy.

    But with 3 boys, I dunno how many wifi devices for a geek and a Synology NAS, 3x wired gaming PCs, it seems to hit a bottle neck every now and then. Range is ok for our open plan house and large WA block, except at the pool where I had to move the wireless camera closer.

    I have terrivle FTTN, so 40/5 is the best connection I get and speedtest is 28 to 38 down.

    I am hoping that WIFI 6 will help a lot. I need at least 4 LAN + 1 WAN to the fttn modem.

    Is it worth getting this modem instead? given how much we use this, it is less a question of whether I buy a better thing for more. Just don't want to waste. Also don't want to struggle.

    • R7000 is a dual band AC1900. This router would be a significant improvement over what you currently have.
      How big is the area that you want to provide wifi coverage for (house and backyard)? You might be better off going a mesh network if one router cannot provide all the coverage. FYI I have bought 2 of these AX9000 to combine into a mesh network for my house.
      Do you have ethernet cable run through the house for wired connection? Gaming is always much better on wired ethernet.

      • yeah, I have backhaul ethernet cat 6 if I did a mesh, but didn't see the option to do a wired backhaul mesh.

        especially the Synology NAS can be bottlenecked at times, even though it is wired to the 3 gaming PCs (copy test)

        RANGE. is fine, iay need a circle 2m+3m more outside … so even maybe moving my main router 1m could achieve that. so probably can avoid mesh

          I couldn't see the wired backhaul option either in reviews online. I had to ask a few users on here who already have the device, and they have confirmed that you can put it in wired backhaul.

          The Asus ax11000 is a great router, and it's also 2.5 times the price.

      Plug the lan cable on your current router into the WAN port on the this router.

        • That's the 2.5Gb port - you can use the other 1Gb WAN port if the higher speed one is faster than your broadband, and use the blue port for higher speed connections between devices such as newer 2.5Gb optioned laptops and [especially] file servers on your home network using a 2.5Gb switch.

  • My current ISP supplied router located in ground floor doesn’t have proper signal in the first floor of my rented townhouse. There’s no provision for a wired backhaul.

    Will this router have strong signal to support devices in the first floor?

    • What technology are you on (FTTN, FTTP?, Etc)? is your current ISP router a modem as well? How big is your 2 level townhouse?

      If you're only looking for a single device, then this router will be your best cost effective option. The range and signal strength in this router would be heaps better than your current device. 2 in wireless mesh mode would be preferably better.

      Note: if you're current device acts as a modem, then you'll keep that in place and turn off the wifi. Connect this router to your modem and this provides the wifi and routing functionality.

      • HFC. The current device is ISP supplied router connected to NBN modem.

        • So the nbn modem will remain, and this router will completely replace your ISP issued router

    • Yes this is just a router for wifi and wired routing. You may need a separate modem if your nbn connection requires it (FTTP hardware includes the modem, so this plugs straight into it).

    • Not sure what version this one is from PCByte. If it's the global version, I'll be flashing the Chinese firmware to maximise wifi signal.

        Yep. That was my experience with the AX3600.

        The AX3600 Global Wi-Fi power was just piss poor, dialed down for compliance with Euro standards. There was a way to flash it back to the Chinese firmware, but also have the language changed to English, and have it work with the Mi Home app (without it complaining about your location).

        My question above could have been worded better. I was asking if you happen to receive an AX9000 unit with the Chinese firmware from PCByte, and decide to flash it to the English / Global firmware, is there a way to dial up the Wi-Fi powers, say via ssh commands?

        If it is the Global / English version the power adapter pins will most likely be AS/NZS3112 compliant.
