      • Hmmmm…. That is the question. There's very little and mixed info on the net about that, and loading openwrt as well 🤔

        • Maybe my google-fu is extremely rusty.
Have you been able to locate the Chinese firmware for the DVB4304GL model?
The only way to be sure is the flash the firmware, and run before & after tests.

        • Well, mine has a tracking number already, so should arrive either tomorrow or the next day

  • +1

You know this router is popular when Woolies is selling them via their Everyday Marketplace.

  • Got the AX6000, I believe I bought it from Banggood and really happy with it. It's got Chinese software and not an issue, just setup with a device that has Internet/translate like your phone. Signal power is the best, it hasn't skipped a beat, never needed resetting. I think there was one firmware update that's it. It's connected to a Netcomm modem put in bridge mode (FTTN). I don't think this one will be much better in terms of wireless. Remember, you need 802.11AX adopters in every machine to take advantage of WIFI6.

    • Not every machine, just the ones that you want to benefit from it. Many phones already do, and people swap out laptops and other devices pretty regularly. You'd get a fair few ax devices over the next few years.

  • So has anyone received delivery, or picked up locally, and successfully flashed the Chinese firmware on it?

    • bought 25/2, tracking number recd today
estimated delivery Thur - Mon Sydney

    • according to the openwrt page, the global model has secure boot enabled but the chinese one does not . this might matter. you are best off checking the ax9000 forums on openwrt before proceeding or you might brick your router . you might also want to buy a 1.8V USB to TTL converter first in case your brick it.

      • Thanks. I've been reading the threads on openwrt. I reckon there's zero chance I'm gonna be able to load openwrt on it without bricking it :/

        • +1

loading openwrt looks straight forward (expand direct rooting device procedure). i don't think you can brick it doing that. if anything goes wrong you just do a factory reset and try again. a link to the oem firmware is also on the page in case you decide that openwrt isn't for you and you want to go back to the oem firmware. alternatively just enjoy the oem firmware

    • +1

Just received my router. 2.4Ghz signal strength is weaker than my previous asus r68u - but seems to support a higher throughtput. Came with international firmware, 3.0.40 (latest). I choose singapure as my region, thinking it might be better than choosing aus, but not sure.

      • What about 5Ghz signal strength?
Are you gonna try loading the Chinese firmware onto it?

        • +1

not sure yet. will test for a bit with this one before I decide. signal strength is not as strong as I thought it was going to be, to be honest. I think I will need a mesh anyway. 2.4ghz with asus used to reach my whole house without an issue. this one seems to be more unstable, one less signal bar in my office, for example.

          • @pragmaticguy: If you're gonna get a second device for mesh, maybe try the AX6000? $165 delivered from AliExpress.

            • @mandelbrot: sad to see my asus r68u seems to outperform this router at more than 5-10m distance… how can such a beast be outperformed by a small, 10y old router…?

              • @pragmaticguy: 😬
Loading Chinese firmware or openwrt is the way to go… If it works

                • @mandelbrot: sent an email to xiaomi asking about this possibility. lets see what they say.

                  • @pragmaticguy: I emailed them earlier in the week. This was their response:
"There is no particular firmware that is designed to provide a consistent signal strength of 30dBm. However, the AX9000 itself should be able to emit up to this signal strength in the 5MHz operating frequency."

                    • @mandelbrot: very disappointed with the signal strength on this router, it doesn't make any sense for it to be weaker than my 10y old asus, even on 2.4ghz. the asus is 80% smaller! and the asus is also sold here in AU, so no excuses in terms of signal tx strength, they are both limited by the same laws.

                      • @pragmaticguy: I have same experience with mine

Poor signal strength compared to my Asus rt-ac86

                        • @sabrelli: Have you tried loading the Chinese firmware or openwrt on it?

                        • +2

@sabrelli: I am discussing the matter with xiaomi support. It would help if more people emailed them complaining about the same thing. Please email at [email protected] . I honestly don't think we are going to get anywhere with this problem, it is what it is. But it is worth a shot.

They sent me an email with some instructions to test, and said if the problem is not solved to take it back to the authorized dealer. I said I dont think its a hardware problem, but one an engineer should look into.

                          • @pragmaticguy: good luck with that one. Been down that route.

                            • @id: Do share ! What happened ?

                              • @pragmaticguy: in short, subpar performance of wifi global implementation. some of us in openwrt have hit a snag in dev. for the avg joe I would skip this halfbaked openwrt. just try the Chinese firmware.

                                • @id: Have you tried ?

                                  • @pragmaticguy: B4 work caught up, was part of dev hacking the damn thing a yr or so ago

                                • @id: what I meant when I said the avg joe… due to the fact there were lots of interest in this rt here, there's a good chance many will brick it trying to flash openwrt. Read up the forums to get an update on latest dev.

                                  • +1

@id: What I meant is the Chinese firmware, I couldn’t find anyone who tried to install it (with confirmed steps) - on top of the global version one (3.0.40)

                                • @id:

                                  just try the Chinese firmware.

can the chinese firmware be flashed on the global version? the openwrt says the global version has secure boot, the chinese version does not

                                  • @c64: sorry yes. I don't have both rt any longer. When I recall, yes secureboot was a snag on the intl ver.. the prob was you'd be able to load the cn ver but no way to auto boot it when you restart. :(

                          • @pragmaticguy: At least that gives you an out if you want to return it for a refund 👍

                            • @mandelbrot: Seriously considering it. It’s a good router for people in apartments, though. Can handle 1 wall ok I think. 2 walls is already too much for it , even tiny asus routers humiliate it in that scenario

                              • @pragmaticguy: Mine even struggled thru one brick wall 5m from router.

Asus had no issue's same location

                            • +1

@mandelbrot: solved the signal problem. solution: sold this router and bought the asus ax86u from another ozbargain promo. sold this one for 220. asus's performance when sitting right next to the router is not as good, but on the other hand its much better when walking around the house. in fact, its powerful enough for me not to need any other router/mesh.

                              • @pragmaticguy: Good to hear. I ended up cancelling my order (cos for some reason they took ages to dispatch) and getting 2 Xiaomi AX6000 from AliExpress. Chinese versions so wifi not gimped. Max 30dBm transmit power with 160Mhz channels and my whole house is blanketed with sensational wifi.

The should have been the base case for the AX9000.

            • @mandelbrot: Still waiting for delivery of my AX9000.
I have a couple of spare AX3600 (with Chinese firmware). Do you reckon they will mesh well with the AX9000?

If it works, then I guess I might be able to ditch my ASUS RT-AX88U even with the weaker Wi-Fi from the AX9000.

              • +1

@DoctorCalculon: Routing wise I haven't heard of any issues with the AX9000. It should mesh well with your AX3600s.

                • +1

                  @mandelbrot: Thanks, mate.

      • Mine came with 3.0.33 but i also selected not to auto update during setup…

      • Play with this router in the last 2 days, and I'm a bit disappointed.

My old wifi 5 performs pretty much the same as the router.
Speed test connects to my NAS via 1gbe is equally/bellow my old router.
Speed test connect to my NAS via 2.5gbe is significantly bellow then my old router ( I connect my synology NAS via 2.5gbe usb dongle.
The software is limited. At the moment I can't access the data center in the NAS, because the xiaomi router firewall block it. The software don't have option to unblock it.

Now how can i return it.

        • Have you try to load the Chinese firmware onto it?

        • checked with PCbyte. they said you can't return it unless its faulty. its not faulty, its just bad - so you cant return it.

      • I am same as you, worse performance than my asus ac68u. worst of all, chrome started to report website insecure issue. when check, i found the ssl cert has changed from the website's cert to xiaomi's own cert. seriously?

further investigation suggest xiaomi has issue dealing with secure dns (https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/188094431/disaster-…), but that sounds very dogegy me.

lack of support for other firmware makes it impossible to workaround this issue without a brain surgeory. now contacted pcbyte for return, let's see how it goes.

        • For the certificate issue I heard it goes away if you change the dns to another one , like 8.8.8.8 for example

          • @pragmaticguy: yea that's how i worked around it for now. but their dodgyness has lost my trust, also the poor wifi signal performance.

    • interested to find out as well, especially with secure boot in the Global version !! If this can't be flashed to Chinese firmware, by the sounds of things it's pretty much a dud

  • bought 25/2 .. no delivery tracking yet

    • just got my tracking number, bought it 25/2 too. most optimistic delivery is this friday, but it doesnt look like it will happen. tue next week is worst case scenario

  • How does this router compare to the ASUS GT-AX6000? Will be using it for gigabit FTTP, any issues?

    • This one has better hardware specs (assuming the wifi power isn't gimped for EU market). Asus has better software. This one is half the price.
If using for FTTP, this router (and any router) plugs directly into the NTD modem.

      • Dammit. OOS ☹️

  • Lol this router sucks, my 6 year old non wifi 6 router performs better via wifi

Via wifi the 5ghz performs better than the 5ghz game

    • My ping has also gone from 8 to 14 using speedtest.net

  • Does the Xiaomi mesh only work with other Xiaomi routers. Can I mesh it with my ASUS RT-AC88U?

    • Only asus routers can mesh with asus routers. Same for Xiaomi routers

This router is a disappointment with the international version of firmware. I have an old Xiaomi AX6000 with the Chinese firmware and it is much better than this for Wifi coverage. Now i have to figure out how to change the firmware to Chinese verison.

    • Agreed, keep us posted if you work it out mate

      • Also interested. Though I must say- i don’t have time for this stuff, might just sell the router or return it, and be done with it

        • return it

PCByte returns policy is complete shiite.

          Link: https://www.pcbyte.com.au/return-policy

If you wish to return a product that you have purchased from PCByte and it has been approved by the PCByte team for a change of mind return, there will be a restocking fee amounting to 20% of the item value for items that have been opened or used.

Whether I open the box or not, they will charge the 20% restocking fee.

I guess I will just keep it, and use it as an additional AP until I figure out how to safely flash the firmware to the CN version.

  • Wow. I have the the AX6000 for almost 2 years with current Chinese firmware 1.0.103. Fantastic device as primary Router. Only use the 5Ghz 160mhz channel, so can't comment on 2.4Ghz signal. Given that my router has a relatively weak dual core CPU, I am very surprised that people are having problems.

    • Pretty sure the AX6000 runs the quad core Qualcomm IPQ5018 CPU.

      • Nope. Dual core with an NPU. Confusingly Xiaomi have recently released an AX6000 Redmi brand router with different specs and physical appearance. This may be the one you are referring to.

  • i have initiated a return of this router to pcbyte, there is a bug in the router that chrome started to report website insecure issue quite frequently. when check, i found the ssl cert has changed from the website's cert to xiaomi's own cert. seriously?

further investigation suggest xiaomi has issue dealing with secure dns (https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/188094431/disaster-…), but that sounds very dogegy me.

    • Could you please let us know how you go with this?

They don't list a number for their online store, only individual retail stores.

claim email sent for a day, no reply yet. will update progress here.

        • I reached out to them via chat.

          Here is their response:

For this, please send us an email with photos and video of the item showing the issue. Please also send photo of the seral number on the product. You may send it to [email protected]. We will be in touch with you by email for the process.

          • @DoctorCalculon: i just got their email reply, requesting the same thing, which i provided, let's see how it goes.

did you return yours as well?

            • +1

              @Tyler Kwok:

did you return yours as well?

Nope. They won't process anything over chat.

Waiting for their response via email - same as you.

I have a feeling they will classify this as a change of mind return, and deduct 20% of the cost.
Good thing I paid via PayPal.

              I will keep you posted.

            • @Tyler Kwok: Aside from the photo of the serial number, what photos are you sending them?

I wish I had my old ASUS AC router for testing the WiFi.

Anyone know of a good utility app for testing WiFi performance objectively?

              • +1

@DoctorCalculon: They asked for front and back photo and a video of the issue, I told them the dns certificate issue is a product defect (it is imo) and send them a screenshot of the certificate error when accessing google.com.

Even if it's a change of mind refund of 80%, i'd be happy to get my money back. It's pathetic my 10 yo ac68u beats it on wifi signal coverage, and there's no decent custom firmware to improve it. There is really no value of this router for my use case.

              • +1

@DoctorCalculon: got my reply today below, i am not sure if I want to return it. if they don't think it a defect, they will need to ship it back to me at my own cost:

    • I initiated a return and asked for refund as the signal strength was extremely poor. The PcByte support team acknowledged the issue but said that "vendor is looking into the matter". It's been a month and have received neither the router or refund.

      • Charge back or PayPal dispute.
You will certainly be hearing back from them after that.

  • I can't believe how bad the wifi strength is on this thing given its size and amount of antenna's, if anyone has any luck returning theirs please let us know here

These have 3.0.40 global firmware are a pain in the ass to break into using multiple exploits and scripts you can obtain from multiple posts from multiple forums. I'm fairly sure you can't even flash chinese firmware on them but I'm confident you can use SSH to increase the radio strength though. Once I've figure it out I'll write a guide because I'm about 5 hours into this.

    • Legendary, thanks so much, other than the bad wifi strength it’s working pretty good so far for me

    • Any luck with changing the WiFi power via ssh?

      • +4

        Sorry been busy away lately.
I've enable SSH using forum post and hdr2: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/openwrt-support-for-xiaomi-ax900…
To enter the scripts - open chrome, press f12. drag and drop script into console.

Make sure to select the correct Region when you use those console scripts.

If you can't access your setup page because of an error (possibly due to wrong region) after flashing use the edited link :
        http://router.miwifi.com/cgi-bin/luci/;stok="xxxxx"/web/init…
token "xxxxx" can be obtained if you open f12 console of browser when at login page and see it.

I had to factory reset my router about 5 times for it to finally work at step 9.

At step 9 download the program Putty, select telnet 192.168.31.1 port 23. Username "root" password from step 8.
Enter the telnet commands from step 10 one at a time and press enter between.

The other forum to use is https://4pda.to/forum/index.php?showtopic=1021385
        in particular this page https://4pda.to/forum/index.php?showtopic=1021385&st=120

There's limited info for what to do after SSH is enabled. One user on 4pda suggested that flashing chinese firmware onto global is more dangerous.

Now I'm trying to test the signal strength after applying SSH commands.
People think you need to change tx power/ and/or country code in SSH.
Hopefully someone else can jump in here. I don't know what I'm doing and how to test. I believe -30db is the goal.

        Few SSH commands to test:

        cp -af /lib/wifi/qcawificfg80211.sh /lib/wifi/qcawificfg80211.sh.orig # backup
        sed -i -e 's/max_power=[0-9]/max_power=30/' /lib/wifi/qcawificfg80211.sh # you can try more instead of 30
        sed -i -e 's/country_code="[AZ]
"/country_code="CN"/' /lib/wifi/qcawificfg80211.sh # you can also put another region instead of CN

        iwinfo wl0 txpowerlist
        iwinfo wl1 txpowerlist
        iwconfig wl0 txpower 30
        iwconfig wl1 txpower 30

        bdata get CountryCode
        bdata set CountryCode=CN
        bdata commit

        nvram set CountryCode=CN
        nvram commit

        • Any luck. Anyone know how to improve wifi power ?

          • @messmorph: iwconfig wl0 txpower 30
            iwconfig wl1 txpower 30
            iwconfig wl2 txpower 30

I think that is doing it.

            • @bboarder: I assume these settings are non-persistent, and you would need to ssh in and run these commands again after a reboot, correct?

              • @DoctorCalculon: If you factory reset yes I think you would.

                • @bboarder: Great to hear.

Would you say the Wi-Fi coverage and performance is now on par with the Xioami AX6000 after upping the Tx power to 30 on all three radios?

            • @bboarder: Did upping the transmit power via SSH actually work?

    • goodluck. if only it was that easy.

I was running tomato on the ac68u unfortunately I didn't test the wifi str before I switched over to the ax9000 all I can say is that it feels faster. I was getting issues with my ac68u through brick walls. Having said that I'm running openwrt and not original firmware. I think they were able to bypass the secure boot on intl.

    • Is your AX9000 the Chinese version or global version? Did you have any problems loading openwrt on it?

I imported mine so it was Chinese to begin with and I didn't have any issues with loading openwrt. I read a recent post on the openwrt dev thread, very simple instructions for loading openwrt via TFTP.

  • So is there a fix for this hunk of junk's terrible wifi performance?
