Focal Clear Mg Professional $1363 (Was $2199) Delivered @ Addicted to Audio

220

Not sure about these for gaming and general usage. Was shopping for a new AMP/DAC stack as well as some bookshelf speakers, and came across these. On the fence about making an impulse buy.

      Yes.

Wait until someone tell him complaining about prices is the entire ozbargain business model.

        • +16

You are right. Shitposting on ozbargain has a direct correlation to our disposable income and net assets. Anyone that opts for historical low prices is poor. People that drop $1363 on a set of quality headphones are independently wealthy and those people only leave positive and uplifting comments on bargain based forums. Got it. Let's downvote those that we suspect are poor and let us litter the ones we suspect as wealthy with awards and badges. Or….we could just embrace diversity of opinion and enjoy this wonderful community for what it is.

          • @seamonkey: Diversity of opinion would =/= bogans complaining these are more than $19 Kmart headphones.

            • +5

@pharcyde: Genuinely hope you enjoy your weekend. Just got tiny bit triggered because original comment. Thought about some poor people that I know that really do want nice things but can't have them because of life changing disability and the like. Not always as simple as more and higher paid employment. Though, I absolutely did overreact. Legit cheers though.

Edit: replied to incorrect member but otherwise the rest stands.

@seamonkey: Access to Food, shelter and medical care are basic human rights in Australia. Headphones costing $1363 are not.

                • +4

@Icecold5000: Fair point. But transpose it with other very expensive things that aren't basic human rights AND expensive and that's when that idea gets troubling. I know one person that through no fault of their own came to Australia when they were a child - now it's so hard for them to get back to visit family on the other side of the world. Significant disability and health issues Some expensive things are neither a human right nor not necessary.

@seamonkey: I recently picked up some Koss ksc75x for US$20 (and free shipping). They are getting more use than my Focals ATM mainly due to the heat. Surprisingly the SQ is a lot closer than the price difference would suggest. Here is a bargain even at full RRP!

            • @mostlygordon: How did you get free shipping?

              • +1

@MrDixit: Some deal last month, think I had to spend US$100, so I got some Porta Pros, KPH30is and cables too.

        • +3

damn, what a douche bag you are.

@jabbawokie: That’s from being right. The truth hurts.

            • +2

@Icecold5000: No, its just that making snide remarks about poor people is a bit trashy.

              • @jabbawokie: How is it snide to state that if you can’t afford something then you should work to earn the money instead of complaining?

    • I missed the fun - what happened?

  • The build quality on these is absolutely insane, they should last forever. The pro is a little flat for me but thats the point of the pro model. I would definitely try before you buy though.

    • +1

Focal build quality is horrendously shit, the headbands crack and they refuse to fix it under warranty
      https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/vqt0zj/2022_upd…

    • +1

Yeah, this is not my experience with the build quality of focal headphones, aesthetically they look nice, but the build quality is substandard for their price points, especially the headbands.

"they should last forever" maybe if you never use them.

  • +2

They run extra 10-20% off sales every now and then. That's usually the best price you can get them for if you're not in a hurry.

  • +8

Non-Mg is still generally regarded as better if you can secure it at $1100 or less.

Compared to say a HD6XX, this is punchier with amazing imaging, just a slightly metallic timbre.

I think there's better ways to spend this kind of money these days.

    • +4

Are you referring to the OG Clears?

      They're currently on sale for $999 @ A2A

I have these and love them so much. Waiting on the Radiance to drop in price to have a closed back compliment my clears.

      • +2

that better deal for more less the same headphone, I agree with jasswolf

      • Yup, but there are a couple of planars above the Edition XS that are well worth a look instead of the Clear IMO.

  • https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products/focal-clear-open-bac… is a much better deal

    identical headphones, different accessories.

    • Different. The deal was MG (newer version). Your link is for the older, original Clear.

      • +1

If you look at the crinacle list you will find the original clear is objectively better than the MG. Just because something is newer doesn't necessarily mean its better.

        • +3

I was putting emphasis that MG and original have different drivers and therefore, they’re different.

“Objectively” better? Nothing in audio world is objective :)

        • +1

His rankings are of course subjective, not sure why that needs to be explained. Measured data can only tell you so much at this point in time.

But the general consensus is that the OG Clears only lose to the Mg on timbre.

Would recommend a visit to the store and a listen. I own Clears, but my Radiance spend a lot more time on my head.

Focal headphones have been on sale for a couple of months. They are clearing discontinued stock as they had one final shipment of them in. I tried the clear MG's on (they didn't have a demo pair of the clear OG's) and they sound great. Fantastic if you like rock, metal, and EDM music. Like it is a noticeable difference in quality listening to them and say a $300 pair of Audio Technica or entry Sennheiser headphones.

Just depends on what you want to spend your money on at the end of the day.

    • Are you saying the Clear MG pro is being discontinued? Any idea why?

      • The OG's are discontinued. MG's are still being made.

  • +2

I went to Addicted To Audio 2 weeks ago to buy the Focal Clears for $1k on sale. The Clears did nothing for me, ended up spending twice as much and walked out with Hifiman Arya Stealth with ifi Zen Dac v2 + Can stack.

go instore and listen to a few headphones, now sure how much better the MG are to the OG Clears

  • Never tried these but I am very happy with the sound quality of my $280 B&W PX7.

    • +3

Never tried these but I am very happy with the sound quality of my $10 Buzz Lightyear headphones

      • Have tried those, they are crap.

        • Did you burn them in for 167 hours?

          • @ihfree: Probably should just burn them in a trash bin.

  • +2

Oh to be well off enough to consider over $1300 for a single set of headphones a bargain.

Don't get me wrong, I'd absolutely LOVE these and I can appreciate high quality sound (own a DAC and decent headphones). But no way on Earth I could spend this much on a set of cans.

  • I have the Focal Clear OGs - amazing.
    I plug them into a Qudelix 5k

  • How does this compare to ad900x? In term of sound stage? The focal is 55 ohm and ad900x 38 ohm

  • Definitely try before you buy. I tried the Clears out and didn’t think much of them at all.
If you want to spend this much on a gaming headset I highly recommend the Audeze LCD-GX. Bit the bullet on those and a FiiO K5 Pro ESS when I went to addictedtoaudio and haven’t looked back they’ve blown me away.
