The adidas Gift Card Scam (TCN)

I bought a $100 gift card (GC) from The Card Network and partially redeemed/swapped it for a $50 Adidas GC.

I go to Adidas website and order something for $63. I have the $63 item in my cart and think I can do a split payment using my $50 GC and pay the balance with credit card but they don't allow split payments (scam #1).

So I call TCN but they won't allow me to cancel the Adidas GC and change it for another store (scam #2).

They also won't allow you to increase the value from $50 to $100 so that I can use up my GC to buy this $63 item (scam #3).

I will never buy gift cards again. They are not useable and make you do so much BS just so that you can use them, not to mention they expire. I don't think True Rewards GC's have an expiry date but TCN have a 3 year limit.

You may want to look up the definition of a scam, but yes gift cards always have tons of limitations and are best avoided. Not worth the hassle.

    • yep, lesson learnt

Strange that you can't use gift card + credit card though

    • +2

yes it's odd, most websites will allow split payments, but not adidas

  • +7

It is more a question to ask Adidas why gift card + credit card is not allowed.

      • +22

        Bullshit they said that! lol

        • haha

        • If that's what they heard..you can understand the failure to interpret t&C's…

  • +10

Can we just put a banner under the Ozbargain header that says 'Don't buy gift cards without researching first'?

      • +1

Both Adidas and TCN admitted to this predatory behaviour?!

At least make it believable, come on.

        • Yes of course they said it, they're running a business! They said you it's up to shoppers to read the T&C's before purchasing a gift card and too bad if you didn't.

            @x x:

Yes of course they said it, they're running a business

I think you need to look up the dictionary for the word "said".

            • @Ughhh: words came out of their mouth, how else do you describe this phenomena in your world? no comprendo ingleso?

  • +12

    This isn't a scam, it's stupidity.

    • do you think it's stupid to think you can use an adidas gift card to purchase things using split payment from the adidas store?

      • +1

        Yes.

        • -1

why, most online stores allow split payments

          • +14

@x x: On the page for the Adidas gift card it literally states you can only use it in store to start with. In addition to that, before assuming, you should check. This is not an Adidas or tcn problem, it's a you problem.

            • +1

              @brendanm: yep, lesson learnt

            • @brendanm: Then the page is wrong, because he just said he could use it on the website, just not as a split payment.

  • but they don't allow split payments

I find this difficult to believe when part of the payment is a gift card voucher.

    • yes it's odd, most websites will allow split payments, but not adidas

  • I used a gift voucher($50) + credit card towards a payment last year. The voucher is given by my friend who received it as a compensation from adidas.

    • +2

That's a proper voucher that can be entered in the "coupon code" or whatever they call it section. Op has purchased a sort of credit card that you can only use in store.

wonder why the website doesn't handle them….

Scam number 4 for Op !!

  • So okay, they say they can only be used in store. But that aside, if they can actually be used online (which it seems they can), then how can you use them if there is no split payment? You would have to buy something that (when shipping is added) costs exactly $50, or forfeit part of the gift card. Makes no sense.

  • You can use split payment. My last purchase was 90% gift card (though they're treated more like coupons) and the rest cc. You didn't have an eligible "gift card" for online store.

A scam is something similar to what I just encountered today at Marketplace, 2015 Mazda CX5 no issues, no WOVI, mechanically and cosmetically excellent, selling for $8k. I asked for details, he replied with "For more information please contact at: [email protected] I will send you all information for the car"

Can you purchase cars on fbm with Adidas gift cards?

      • +2

According to that scammer chick Lauren, you bet your a$$ you can.

All these gift card posts are just like car crashes. It's hard to look away.

  • +5

It’s not a scam. You haven’t read the details about the gift card. It is for In Store only.

unfortunately you can’t use it online.

I hope Adidas sees this post and sues OP arse for defamation .
They are scamming OP due to OP lack of reading t&c's .
Its a ridiculous post and TCN has the same ground to go after OP as well .
