Mattress for a Restless Sleeper

My partner is a restless sleeper who tosses and turns alot - Our current mattress (Sealy Posturepedic) bounces a lot when they move and this disrupts my sleep.

Our bed frame is solid timer, so I'm thinking we need a new mattress, but I have no idea where to start.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any tips to reduce the motion transfer from their side of the bed?

  • Not sure about how they go with solid timber frame, our one is some cheapy one from ebay with gas lift and wood slats on a metal frame but we are happy with the sleep republic one. Might be worth a go with free returns. I hear good things about sleeping duck too. Not sure how you feel about mattress in a box as there are heaps of people against it..for some reason.

    • I also have a Sleep Republic mattress. It's great - the only disturbance I get from my partner's all-night Macarena is the sound (or if she actually rolls into me).

You will want a pocket spring rather than an innerspring/coil, as they are better for not transferring movement (but obviously test before buying, etc).

    • I agree with the pocket spring mattress recommendation. They are more expensive, but seem to be very effective in reducing the problem of movement disturbing the other person. We have one from a mattress manufacturer in Adelaide, Supercraft Bedding. It's been brilliant.

    • This is it - pocket spring is the solution!

For OP, pocket spring segments the mattress so a move in one area doesn't necessarily impact others.

They actually aren't that expensive. I recalled buying one last year for $250-300 delivered.

i recommend posting on here, there's a guy that i think owns (or works) a mattress store that always posts helpful advice

  • There are so many varieties of mattresses out there, instead of asking from a forum, why not visit one of them and get some ideas? Try Forty Winks or Snooze, you don't have to buy from them. There are soft.. hard, spring, 1000's of springs, form, memory form, pick your poising. And the price.

To make it, even more, worst, a mattress that suits you does not necessarily suit on your partner either.

  • pocket spring + king and you will never be woken again.

Try a bed of nails. That will stop him rolling around.

    • Especially if he gets nailed.

Tempur would help, but they are exy and some people don't like the feeling of them.

  • We have a Slumberland Stonehenge which is the extra firm type. It’s now called Essex. Can’t feel a thing when the other person moves.

Other than pocket springs, memory foam is great. There is no bounce at all and the mattress wont move. However some people dont like them and they can run a bit hot (I've never noticed but some people complain about it)

    • I went from memory foam to pocket springs, I found memory foam get hot.

  • I stopped sleeping on spring mattress at least 5 years ago. We use Tatami mats (Japanese mats) with futton. I hate how after a couple of years the firmest spring mattress will go soft.

  • Get a split mattress - anything else is a waste of time and money

  • Get a cat instead, they aren't heavy enough to bounce the mattress too much.

    • I have 2 of these. They also act as a weighted blanket…whether you want them to or not.
