Jetstar/Qantas middle name required?

Trying to book a Jetstar and Qantas flight but their booking system is rubbish.

They only have space for a first and last name. But what if your passport also has your middle name in there? Is it not required anymore?

I can only imagine arriving at the counter and being told by a power tripping checkin person that my name in the booking doesn’t match my passport.

Yes, absolutely everyone with a middle name will be rejected at check-in.

Oh dear - I have two middle names, I'm likely going straight to jail.

sorry mate, you'll be taken out to the bush and handed a shovel…..

    • No middle name?! No flight for you! NEXT!

    • What if it doesn’t fit in the allocated space and there is nowhere else you can add it in.

They only have space for a first and last name

If this is an accurate statement, then that is the information that you need to provide.

This is why they cancel flights so often, all the bookings are for people with middle names that get stoned to death upon check in.

    • And instead of refunding you, they keep your money in a pot for Alan Joyce's next bonus.

  • domestic or international?

domestic they dont check nothing, licence sometimes if you go to the counter

international has to match, they check passports

    Not required

Not required except in specific circumstances. As per https://www.qantas.com/agencyconnect/au/en/policy-and-guidel…

    • Do you know if this also apply to Jetstar flights considering they’re owned by Qantas?

OMG the answer is right there on the page. The company that owns Jetstar literally says "middle names not needed" and you're still worried about it? LOL

        • +1

OMG owning something doesn’t mean you run its operation! LOL

          • @ozeebee: It's a very strong indicator when it comes to things like "are middle names required".

Some people just like to create problems out of nothing, and refuse to let go even when evidence points to there being no problem.

never used a middle name on any flight booking with any airline either domestic or international

  • Since on passport it is mentioned as first line: Surname and second line: Firstname Middlename - I follow the same and put my First name when making bookings as Firstname Middlename

Haven't had any issues doing this.

    • Yeah that’s what I’m trying to do but the first name and middle name together doesn’t fit in that space allocated.

Dont use your middle name. Everything will be OK, only a first name and surname are required

  • Domestic I don't enter my middle name

  • The only time I have ever worried about first name/middle name was when we did our applications for Chinese visas…

For some reason, middle name was required before first name…

I agree with don't worry too much for domestic, but make sure everything matches your passport when booking international.

And watch the visa applications very, very carefully.

  • Just checked some old bookings with Jetstar and didn't use my middle name. I don't think I've ever used my middle name with planes tickets. I recently booked Jetstar flights too and I don't remember it even having a spot for middle name

  • My surname has an apostrophe and most airlines won’t accept it on the booking so obviously doesn’t match my passport. No issues so far.

The key thing here is to answer what they’re asking from you.

In your case, they’re not asking for a middle name. They’re only asking for a first name and surname.

I’m not saying it will happen, but if you do put your middle name in the first name box, you could be liable for a name change fee, as it is not correct.

In the case of people who have said they’ve had visa applications ask for a middle name, you put a middle name.

Follow the instructions. Don’t overthink it.

  • Did a flight recently when the booking was missing middle name. The auto check in system did pick up the mismatch, but you just had to click an acknowledgement on a warning message.

  • Never use middle name booking flights even international (NZ, asia, europe). Can't remember if they asked for it on trip to USA.

  • Hi - how did you go? I have just realised this with my daughter's name. I didn't put her middle name in. We are flying on Sunday.
