trying to dump old stock before Gen5 hits the shelves. Gen5 will be double speed.

Gen5 will mean nothing at all to most users for real world performance. Drives will cost more and will run far hotter for little to no benefit to how fast Windows will feel in general. Game load times will also barely benefit. Not to mention the vast majority of ppl are on systems that only support gen4. Give me cheap gen4 drives any day.
For example, my 980 pro died recently and I am stuck with a Sata drive while i wait for a new drive to arrive. This drive is about 10-15x(ish) slower, yet even that is barely noticable. There is so much information online including real world workload benchmarks over the years to back this up if u need further proof before making a purchasing decision.

Agree. Unless you use it for streaming data etc.

      • +4

I agree, from the brief content I've come across around PCIe Gen 5 it seems to have the most impact for datacentre and server applications.

Consumer use cases and throughput haven't caught up it seems.

      • I agree. By the time programs are optimised to use Gen 5 well enough, they will become cheaper.

Just like whats happening now with Gen 4

      • assuming gen5 drives will be of no benefit for ps5 usage? cause that supports gen4?

    • So shall we HODL?

I'd like to see the price drop on mass-storage regular ssd's. Like the samsung 4/8TB drives. I recently purchased a 8TB firecuda 3.5" hdd which is fast for what it's used for but ssd's should be the norm now imo, since M.2 will be the norm soon. Prices need to crash a lot more for me to bite.
Plus i prefer to buy from AUS suppliers for warranty reasons and giving the battler a go.
    Just my 2c

    • Agree with the AUS warranty. But they will never go as low as US prices in most cases unfortunately. US prices always remain tempting.

      • Yeh i am currently in the middle of a warranty claim on a 980pro from AmazonUS. Samsung refused warranty as its a grey import. It is currently on the way back to Amazon for a refund. Will be interesting to see what they give me, if anything. If all goes well with the refund / replacement through amazon on a 1.5 year old drive, I think id buy from US again due to the price difference.

        • I know, and actually waiting to see how your claim goes. Did you have to ship just to AU or all the way back to US?

          • +1

@John Doh: looks like its going to the US. I dont really know, I just had to take it to a ParcelPoint location and they do the rest. Fun thing is the closest ParcelPoint was 150km away and Amazon did not care. Tried the webchat and then the support phone line, but there was no way they could change it to australia post. If i get the refund i wont care about he 300km round trip. If they weasel their way out of it though, I will be pissed.

yeh me too, I would love an 8TB M2 drive. Gen3, or hell even SATA would be fine. I just want M2 cuz i hate cables and drive bays :)

      • M2 anyday. Simply fast. Am tempted to buy these 2TB M2, but will wait for 4TB to hit 275 mark. Have enough SSD space for now. Moved all the unplayed games to external drives.

        • Don't you have unlimited internet? Can't you just download what you want to play?

          • +1

            @Micsmit: I do. But still just 65mbps on a 100mbps plan.

  • I have the 1 tb of this.

No more 2 second load screen leaving Hogwarts. Aww Yiss

  • none of these sn850x's seem to have heatsink… do you need a heatsink with the ps5?

  • Down to $572.39 after spiking to 650+ for a few days.

  • Just keeps going down. Now $570.90.

Must be punishment for me giving up on HODLING.
