    • ohhhh, that's some big claim here… these speakers with amp can easily go over 3K… I'm seriously curious to find out if the sound difference is comparable to the prices?

    • +5

In that case, for around the same price, the Q150s & Loxjie A30 will be much better than the Edifiers.

LS50s are much better than either option though if your budget allows.

      • +1

Some reviews have the Edifier over the LS50s. You are just looking at $$$ and not listening.

        • +2

I'm happy for anyone who can't hear a difference, it will certainly save them a decent chunk of cash. But having had them side by side in the same room, listening to the same listening material, the Edifiers aren't even close. There's a reason the LS50s are one of the most well reviewed speakers ever in their price range.

I'm not saying the Edifiers are bad or anything, but at their price there's better options, including the one I mentioned above. Their AIO convenience is nice, of course.

If you're spending $200-$300 on wiring, you're on the snake oil side of audio.

      • +3

What? Aren’t expensive cables more (cough) musical?

      • -5

You have no idea. I use to be skeptical as you.

      • +3

        spending $200-$300 on wiring

Harvey norman will hook you up

        "Cough cough" Monster

      • -7

The weakest link in your system defines the audio quality.

I would never cheap out on cables.

    • -2

      Edifier are trash

    • As a person who'd used both Edifier and Kef, Edifier was not even close to the 15+Y old Kef pair I had with a decent amp. I used a Yamaha AVR. It does cost over 1K but I'm sure there are cheaper comparable (even better) stereo amps under 1k.

  • +9

Wow. I’m guessing sound quality gets better very slowly in the top end but the price goes up exponentially

    • +20

      Yes, like most hobbies

      • +1

        Amen

      • i swear all of these have a ridicilousness cut off point
if you pass that and justify paying the crazy prices youre just fooling yourself or bloody rich/stupid

    • There is a lot going on here, speakers, amp, dsp, streaming rx, etc.
If you wanted a dsp / reciever could be this price on its own.

Not my budget, but ive drooled over speakers that cost a lot more and do none of the other functions.

      • These aren't the actives.

Double the price for those. Understandably…

  • Here just to dodge all the memes.

  • -1

wow … I thought we are heading into recession …yet ppl spend $2k on a set of speakers?

    • +18

I don’t think this is excessive for a pair of speakers, now if if ask me about those $700 Dyson hair dryers, thats another story !

      • +2

        Or the bladeless fan.

      • and the people who buy the dyson say the same thing at your speakers!

at a certain price point we're all just fooling ourselves!

        • What's that certain price point for speakers and do you think it would be the same for everyone?

          • @Igaf: Haha. No way am I going to answer that for risk of getting slammed. I have been to the bose studios where they have setup home theatre rooms at different price points.

Honestly the super high end ones are not worth it. Bear in mind as you age your hearing declines. I have quite sensitive hearing and having a good surround is more important than these speakers that cost thousands each!

Would love to be proven wrong!

            • +2

@ChatCPT: Price is subjective. A thousand bucks for high quality desktops isn't ott for a good sound system, esp if music's a big thing in your life. Ain't choice wonderful?

              • @Igaf: for sure!
like sommeliers. A blind test - most wouldnt be able to tell the diff between the fine wines a goon bags. I wonder how much is placebo

                • @ChatCPT: Placebo or knowledge and interest? Every home setup differs and you won't get the same experience you might in a HiFi store test setup but my guess is that most people can discern differences between "average" systems and high end without being told which is which. Shouldn't generalise though because some speakers are better than others at say midrange (which I prefer) overall, while others excel elsewhere or are better all round. It depends on your music taste, hearing, and listening abiliity, your receiver/amp…….

              • +2

                @Igaf: People here buy Tesla's.

Others go overseas all the time.

Heck, some just drink or eat excessively.

My guilty pleasure is high end audio.

    • -1

      You got it….

    • +1

      media's lying ….. no recession whatsoever…. #remindmebot365days

  • $1.95k for a pair of upper end bookshelfs may be considered reasonable if you can afford to pay your mortgage and buy food…

Actually, the price of those toys did not go up when everything else are, they are bargains if you compare how many eggs you are going to exchange for one pair.

Having said that, my AKG k812 seems to have almost doubled its value, bought it at $1200 ish from a local shop in Sydney 7 years ago and now it seems to be way up.

      • my AKG k812 seems to have almost doubled its value

        For brand new yes
Unfortunatly, the second hand market for speakers is not that great.
You can pickup used speakers for 70-80% off the retail price

    • also, will it sound 10x better than 200$ speakers?

      • apparently!!

        • +1

Said "nobody ever." There's a reason why WhatHiFi etc have best budget buys and best buys.

  • +1

many selling around same price local aus hifi stores ..maybe little cheaper by calling them, i heard so many audio people say they own these and it’s a experience to hear what they can do for a small speaker 🙏

    • +2

I have been fortunate to listen to a set of LS3/5A speakers paired with AB1 subwoofers.

The sound quality is simply amazing.

Listening to solo piano performances in a concert hall there are nuances in the sound that many cheaper systems would never be able to express. The best I can do to describe it is hearing every inflection and note cleanly and having an auditory vision of the sound stage.

As to expense - I would not call the owner frugal, simply subscribes to the thinking of spending more for quality once and has built up their speaker set over several years. I have done the same with photography gear as an enthusiast and each to their own.

There are lots of comparisons between these Meta 50s and the LS3/5As and before you knock it I would recommend visiting an audio showroom to see what the fuss is about these speakers.

On a side note, the Australia Hi-Fi expo is also coming up in late April in Sydney for hi-fi and home theatre enthusiasts.

$1950 is not a bad price for these, but Hifi equipment is one of the few thing I won't recommend Amazon if you live in a capital city and if you haven't listened to the gear before. Go to a local hifi store and they would be likely to offer you a similar price, with some other good advice hopefully. The important thing is that you get a chance to find out if that sound signature suits you, or if the strength/weakness of the equipment will go well with your room.

    • +1

Agree, but if you are buying online, with amazon you have easy/free returns and don’t need to beg for discounts.

      • Just a heads up this applies to everything besides electrical appliances. Usually refunds are automatic after returning (<1 week) but I returned a monitor recently and it took 6 weeks (+ 3 phone calls) to get my refund. YMMV

        • I returned a kef sub last year and it worked perfectly.

    • They match others discounts and in SA it's been harder to get KEF gear unfortunately so I was forced to.

    • +2

Unfortunately the amount of time I’ve spoken to local Hifi stores who just won’t price match Amazon or even other sellers is shocking. I’m like ok cool I guess I’ll just go there…

      • +1

Yep, they are better off making a small profit than no profit.

Upgraded from the KEF Q100 to the LS50 Meta and it has been a noticeable improvement. Use them as desktop speakers, which admittedly doesn't allow them to live up to their full potential, but these may very well be the last desktop speakers I buy. Love the colours and design too. They've also replaced my headphones for the vast majority of listening I do, I only ever resort to headphones for private listening.

    • +1

I only ever resort to headphones for private listening

      Something something hub

However one would describe the audio quality of the speakers orgasmic

  • Same price at Melbourne Hifi

  • Been wanting these for a while now, but knowing i have to upgrade my amp and possibly get stands too… neeed more moneys

    • +2

I've run the non Metas off Receivers and a sub $200 amp on Amazon, forgot the model, on a desk, it was still very good.

Sure a fancy amp will help, but don't let it hold you back. This is a good price too.

      • I mean of course it will work no issue, but if you’re already going to spend this much…you’d want to bring out 100% of its abilities yanno

        • +1

          90% for $200 or 100% for $2000

The difference between amps is overstated imo. Especially with these as often the really snotty audiophiles review these all the time.

This coming from someone who used DLS Ultimate Amps in his car for years too. Yes they were better, were they worth the money for normal people… No.
