... the Award for Outstanding Service goes to:

… the Manager of my R M William's store.

6 weeks ago I bought a $400 pair of RM Williams boots (my last pair lasted over 10 years despite my neglect). I told the shop assistant a) they seemed too small and were a size smaller than anything I had bought in decades, but was told they would stretch - and b) I said would be wearing them for a month overseas.

They were indeed too small, bruising toes, but I wore them for the month, walking a lot every day, as I had no other shoes and was indeed hoping they would stretch.

Upon return last week I rang the store manager, told him the story, and he said he would change them, despite there being no clear legal requirement for them to do so (no one forced me to buy them).

That indeed is wonderful service … I said I would tell as many people as possible - hence this post.

Thank you R M Williams!!!

Sadly, not really. It sounds like you got a really nice manager at R M Williams.

Asus was quite exceptional when dealing with a fault laptop, though it was in warranty. I send it out to them on a tue and got it back the following friday.

Asus are hopeless when the item is out of warranty though.

      • Asus is hopeless, even IN warranty. Although they're usually pretty good computers in general, my daughter seems to have gotten herself a lemon - it's been back for repairs 3 times in the 8 months she's had it, and this most recent time it went off 2 months ago and is yet to return.

        • You might be able to argue a refund under statutory rights? If it keeps breaking then it's not fitting its purpose, is it?

        • The shop is arguing on her behalf for a replacement.

If a shop assistant checked my shoes, then said it would be fine as they would stretch then I'm unsure how thats good customer service if they returned it when the assistant was wrong.

I guess this doesn't count if he never did anything but mentioned they would stretch which would mean its up to you to figure out how much stretching would be needed.

Leather shoes do strech on wearing them.

I think the point here is OP has recognised exceptional service extended to him by the store manager. Not many people have done that.

Everyone's are entitled to their own opinion and prespective.

Personally I appreciate a post like this. Especially since there are so many other posts of compliants.

      • To me being treated with professionalism and genuine courtesy is just as good as a bargain. I do not mind paying a little extra for getting it either.
I have even started giving a $2 tip at Subway when the sub maker does a good job.

I thought you were being sarcastic and I was going to tell you the story about the lady in a jewellery store who made me wait whilst she finished sucking on a jube before she would serve me.

    • Maybe she was practicing for her evening's plans

      • Her name was Judy, after she finally helped me and was useless I called her Juby.

  • he was $300 in front on the initial sale, so he still made $200 by giving you a replacement.

I'll nominate Seagate for fixing the firmware on my dodgy 7200.11 Barracuda hard drive three years after they issued the firmware update.

My hard-drive developed the firmware issue close to four years after I'd first bought it (while most of the same batch failed very soon after first use). After speaking to some data recovery firms in Melbourne I was fairly sure that it was 50/50 that the drive was fixable and almost 100% certain that even if they could get it working again, I'd lose all my data.

One call to Seagate and they sent a courier to pick up the unit, transported it to Singapore and sent it back with no charge to me within three days. All my data was still intact :)

    • Didn't those drives have a 5 year warranty? (been so long cant remember anymore) That and the 7200.11 were a big known issue, rather than fight an ever raging war I think they just caved.

    Beaurepaires Kotara NSW 2289.
Wife purchased the $25 wheel alignment special (Scoopon a while back).
I had all sorts of mental images of what a 4 wheel alignment on a reasonably modern car would be like..?? but was very surprised.
The car steers and handles better than new and the professionalism and courtesy shown by the staff was exceptional.
When you go anywhere with a discount coupon you usually get the bums rush but not at this place.

  • Good to see some good stories.

At risk of being shot down… Apple. I took my Iphone4 in last week as it had shut itself down a couple of times. It is almost 2 years old and warranty was out at one year. They said they would give me a new phone for $170 - pretty good I think? I had an issue with my Ipad2 some time ago and they swapped it over straight away… no dramas :)

    • That's their standard policy, if your phone carks it and it's a warranty issue they do an immediate swap with a referb for free otherwise you can trade your phone in for a referb for whatever the rate is.

      • What if I want my phone to be repaired and its under warranty still?
        Will they repair it?

Any way I can talk about crap customer service.

The other day I was at dick smith and I was behind some guy replacing his dead phone.
All I wanted to do is check the price of something but I waited for about 10 mins before just leaving. The employee only had to ask me what I wanted, checked the price on the computer next to him and be done with me.

        • I think this thread is for good service Mac :-).

      • Apparently its not a refurb its brand new replacement. I still have a warranty with vodafone but they said they will send it away for 10 days and likely it won't be replaced so don't think I will bother - I will just pay the money to get a new phone. I have never had such good service with any other brands and especially when the warranty has expired so it was really quite refreshing.

    • That is pretty standard. I had to pay $249 when my iPhone 3G battery died. Will never buy another iPhone again, when it works its fine but too many niggling issues with the software, and the back case also developed cracks and I look after my phones very well. I have galaxy s3 now, though I dont hold much hope in Samsung warranty they were appalling when I had to get my laptop repaired, fingers crossed nothing goes wrong with the phone.

      • i would have replaced it for you for $25. (including labour)

  • People over the age of 40 can gain half a shoe size every 10 years.

  • If the store assistant sold you shoes that were too small and claimed they would stretch and they did not they had a clear legal reason to swap them over for you or issue you refund as they weren't fit for purpose.
