Anyone on TPG nbn, Is It Really That Bad?

Hey ya!

Anyone on TPG NBN, Is it really that bad?

Initially I thought TPG was average but looking at the international blend seems pretty dam good. Looking practically at it are the CVC's that bad or is usually user error or crap hardware.

I have very good enterprise hardware so most ISP's I have gone with connection is never an issue however routes are bad. ABB, Launtel, Leaptel all very good routes, testing TPG also comparable so I guess it comes down to sifting through the bad reviews of users that don't really know.

Currently im utilising Sofitel TPG connection in Sydney and it's flying most likely a business agreement but routes are great.

So interested to know residential users use case?

who said it was bad ?

      ABB users haha

      • It all depends on the upstream contention at the Internet onramp, and if you're unlucky, the local segment/tail where its shared with others. All problems any ISP can have, but where the better ISPs shine, especially after 4pm and in the evenings.

      • If you're referring to my comment from your other thread I wasn't referring to TPG specifically rather discount NBN retailers in general. I haven't tried TPG personally, if everything looks good from your research then they're worth a shot, I mean worst that can happen is you have a less than amazing connection for a month.

I've been using TPG for the past year and have only had two major outages, none of which TPG were at fault (someone had drilled through some cables and taken out a few suburbs).

I've used TPG for years with no issues.

I had residential TPG previously and it was honestly the worst internet. I contacted them almost every day because the band strength was pathetic and you couldn’t get 50Mb/s except in front of the modem. I ended up having to purchase a mesh system, which helped the strength a bit, but then we had constant dropouts. The tech team did not care at all. Moved back to Telstra and it was incredible, we could use the supplied modem with no range issues, and we didn’t have dropout again. My partner swears we will never go with any of the cheaper ISPs again due to this whole scenario.

Also we were FTTP and could get 100Mb/s+ with Telstra

That sounds like a wifi issue not a TPG issue. TPG aren't responsible for the wifi signal in your house, if it works fine to the modem then it's working fine.

      • We couldn’t get anything over 25Mb/s through Ethernet either which was painful, but because there was only one computer using Ethernet it wasn’t something I could troubleshoot with them.

you couldn’t get 50Mb/s except in front of the modem

That made it sound like a local network issue. If you can get 50Mb/s at all then the issue is on your local network side, not the ISP side.

It could be that they generally weren't delivering the speeds you were expecting, but that changing your wifi network improved things and being closer to the modem improved things it really doesn't sound like TPG were much of an issue (besides not giving you good advice on how to improve your local connection, which they should do).

it's probably back in the adsl days tpg speeds were very bad, but cheap

Most people complaining about NBN have bad last mile connections or horrendous unreliable consumer hardware. Wifi issues are also blamed on NBN.

ABB is good at diagnosing these issues through their great support team. They also have great transparency of when things go wrong at their end - and they’ve lately had some doozies - including serious DHCP outages for the eastern states resulting in mass outages.

The praise for ABB is probably otherwise undeserved. They now charge almost as much as Telstra since they jacked their prices after the ASX listing, with no 4G backup, and yet their service is otherwise almost the exact same as Superloop/Launtel/Exetel.

I personally don’t see TPG worth considering for NBN. Sure they’re cheap - but there are better providers for same cash - Superloop/Launtel/Leaptel.

Not sure Superloop are that sharp on managing their contention ratios given several uplinks I've seen recently. Not that TPG are near even that. Not sure how ABB and the other 'known goods' are doing. Maybe everything NBN is going to the dogs now

      • i tried ABB and it was way way slower than superloop on a 1000/50 connection.
I'm talking 500-600 on ABB and 800-950 on Superloop.
ABB would also respond very slowly on some very popular websites.

Been with TPG for almost 6 years:
ADSL and NBN to the curb was pretty bad. But with FTTB in my apartment and another house with FTTP I’ve never had an issue once. In 4 years only 2 outages and both fixed within 2 or so days. So I’m very happy with them.
Oh and I’m a big DPS gamer on Xbox servers and never have had issues with ping

  • ABB, Launtel, Leaptel all very good routes

How do I test routes? Im on Superloop.

  • Last night I had terrible speeds for about 30 minutes or so.

  • +1

It was okay, we had them during ADSL, and then transitioned to NBN 25 or 50 plan after ADSL with them, Speeds were okay.
Support wait times was long. Modem was decent too.

Its fine until something goes wrong, then its so awful you will change providers just to get a problem resolved.

Yeah TPG (+ all the ones they've bought out) are absolutely useless in terms of customer helpdesk support.

Also, since OP is using own hardware … Will make any calls to helpdesk/support extremely painful.

  • Probably copper to the node and the node could be 100s of meters away.

  • We’ve been with TPG for many years now. Have never had any major issues from what I can recall and if I’ve ever had to contact them, they’ve been easy to deal with.

We have FTTH and my husband is a gamer and fussy with his internet and has recommended them many times.

  • TPG with NBN HFC, works very well. Got a deal where I pay 80 bucks for Home Superfast (250 / 25 when I got it) forever. Cannot complain, works very well.

I havent had any issues with them connection wise but i am concerned about those new privacy policies theyre throwing around now.
I dont really like the idea of them sharing all those kinds of info with related companies and across multiple coutries but I wouldnt be surprised if everyone else is doing the same thing

    • what do you mean by this?

  • I believe if you're on FTTH, TPG are excellent. They want to boost their average speed figures, so they give us insane discounts so we can't leave.
$84.95/mth for 250/25 - never really had any issues whatsoever for 5 yrs.

    • +1

they won't give this to new customers which is a shame

      • +1

Yeah I was with them for about 6mths when they sent it around. But who knows, they may do it again if their average figures dip 😆
