Looking for a laptop simply for Microsoft Word and browsing the internet, that's it.
Any recommendations are appreciated :)

Other option would be Chromebook.
At HN just tell them you want to get it with a surge protector and antivirus software. They should do a good deal on the laptop, then before paying just say you only want the laptop.
Does it need to be word or would google docs suffice?

Then as boomramada said above consider a Chromebook. A Lenovo duet 5 on sale is good value and may suit your needs especially if you are an android phone user.
$500 get you something like this Acer Aspire 3 with i3 at Harvey Norman or this Acer Aspire 3 with Ryzen 3 at Officeworks. Both are cheap and nasty.
Alternatively you can get used business laptops such as this ThinkPad T480s or Dell Latitude 5300 2-in-1. Performs about just as well (and more than enough for Word or browsing), more RAM, touch screen and far better construction.
Visit JB Hifi or HN then look for a laptop around $500-$700 mark, and haggle it down to $500. That's your winner, you can't go wrong with that one.
You probably get a small list of laptops for that price range and do some google background reach on them. You might find a better deal.
