How to Get Rid of Garden Lizards

I have seen significant increase in garden lizards lately.

I am quite worried as my young kids play there.

Any suggestions to get rid of them or kill them naturally?

I think he wants to kill the lizards not the children.

      • +1

I know. I was referring to the lizards and feeling sorry for having this person as a parent to their children.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Balanced-Barefoot-Unrestricted-Con…

Heard family talking about this recently.

  • It’s possible, but must be done with either a sledge Hammer (only by swinging it over your head) or with a chainsaw.

Note the chainsaw must be loud and you should wear PPE while using said chainsaw.

Both options can be purchased for a nominal fee, and each are often listed on ozbargain.

If the purse doesn’t allow for either option, you can simply opt to just leave them alone..

  • +4

I used to catch them in our garden when i was young and have occasionally caught one that has got into the house.

They’re harmless. They will run from hand to hand and even if they bite, it doesn’t hurt. I really like having them about personally. They’re interesting to look at for kids and as already pointed out, they help with other pests.

  • +16

I think you should hand in your right to have a garden if this is your attitude.

Honestly we're destructive enough as the human race, why would you want to kill something that poses zero risk to you or your kids.
I just hate it when my kids get bitten by tiny lizards…

Wrapping your kids in cotton wool will only end in allergies and precious kids w/ equally precious parents.

  • +7

OP is probably an immigrant so has no idea about lizards. As long as they are not in the house and not bothering you. Leave them alone!

    • +6

Even if they are in the house - catch and release (which is what I do so the cats don’t torment and kill them), or leave them be because they’re likely only inside temporarily and will soon head back out.

    • Does OP not have access to Google where he/she could learn in 5 seconds that these are harmless?

  • +10

Skinks are cute be thankful you have them. I have loads of skinks in my garden and a resident blue tongue. When I used to live in QLD I had geckos in my house, lizards are adorable and harmless.

    • +15

Actually used to have one that found its way into my bedroom in Brissy. He slept under my bed and ate any random moths or bugs that dropped down.

He would come out from under the bed into the ensuite after my gf or I had showered to drink some of the water off the shower floor. I'd even watch him do it.

We had a mutual understanding throughout. I didn't bother him, and he didn't bother me.

      • +1

I've had lizards in the house before. It didn't really bother me but they poo everywhere and sometimes give me a fright when i least expect it!

  • +14

This should be the other way around, those skinks should be worried living around stupid humans like you

  • +9

The OP just quietly went into the fetal position under his blanket

  • +7

You should be more worried about viruses. Children get heaps of respiratory infections.

    • And don’t forget the dangerous drop bears!

  • +9

I refuse to believe people can be this stupid. Unbelievable.

When I used to live in Southern Mexico, we had lizards longer than the length and width of your leg visit your home and sunbathing on your fence everyday. And here we are talking about skinks.

    • +1

My mind went to Gila monsters when you mention the southwest in America.
The only venomous lizard I can think of. And beautiful creatures.

The skinks in his photos are as harmless as a butterfly.

Surely this is a troll post.

  • +5

Why do you want to get rid of them? They're harmless. If they're blue-tongue lizards, then they're native animals. We have a family of them living in our backyard for years now - no harm, but only benifits.

This earth is not just for us humans. Lizards were here well before us,

  • +3

DO NOT KILL THEM you heathen. They will not hurt children.

You will find that they are useful and eat insects like slugs and snails that can eat your plants.

  • are you in QLD?

  • +14

PROTECTED SPECIES - Native animals are protected by the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.
    * All native birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals (except the dingo) are protected in New South Wales by the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016*
    https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/animals-and-plants…

I don't blame you OP, the Australian Government requires very little awareness before granting residencies, citizenships or study visas - We take our wildlife seriously here; whilst other countries take them with spice! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6ZWH_hBVd0

    • +14

lack of education is no excuse. When your first thought is "how do I kill them" rather than "perhaps I should check if they are safe" then the person has serious mental deficiencies. If you don't understand something and your first thought is to kill it then something is wrong with you.

      • My comment was related to the volume and frequency of migrants with differing perspectives being accelerated by the government towards citizenship with no consideration of the dilution of mores and shared societal values. I agree with you.

Migration props up housing (how's your rent these days), which props up the construction industry, which props up the banks and hence the economy and government. The bulldozing of bush-land for new housing for migration arguably on the aggregate produces more devastation on native wildlife than the occasional fearful migrant or the cat loving SINK - no matter how much the general community consensus is in disagreement.

  • +2

Leave them alone! Lizards are good.

  • +1

We get plenty of the asian house geckos here, they are cute and useful but they can make a bit of a mess in the house. But its cheaper and better than spraying for bugs - these guys munch everything lol

  • +1

Really? I could step out the back door and find half a dozen skinks in 2 minutes never ever occured to me to kill them and im certainly no greenie. I love it when the blue tongues come back. Its good for kids my youngest use to pick the skinks up all the time i had to remind him to be gentle.

Now if it was a big goanna or snake maybe i would be concerned.

Our garden is doing great took a few years to get it there we now have maggies here consistently and they go off their nut when they see a snake first time it happened we didnt know what was happening.

Found 2 possums on the powerline last night after i heard a noise on the roof. Not keen on the cats though doing their business in our vege garden or the fox that comes about 30 minutes after the cat.

New rules coming in with cats in my shire good news.

Very dry old soil here but with the plants we have were starting to get a few frogs hiding.

  • +5

You don’t want to harm garden lizards, skinks, blue tongues, Shingle backs….one of life’s pleasures watching them and minding their own business.

  • +1

Watch out for the redbacks and snakes. Not the lizards and water dragons.

  • +1

Don't kill lizards. Don't be that low individual that does.

They are harmless and do you a favour by eating bugs.

They don't shit everywhere or piss on things either.

  • +2

Abusing an animal should = get jail time and a hefty fine

Any torture of an animal for a prolonged period even once, you should get lengthy jail time, a hefty fine, and several years of mandatory counseling. Animal torture is one of the "big three" predictors of sociopathy. People who torture animals are capable of torturing children, intimate partners, or even total strangers.

Repeat offenders should get jail, fines, mandatory counseling and a lifetime ban from owning any domestic animal or holding any job where they work with animals

    • +2

Ok, calm down, OP wanted them gone not tortured.
Even though it's a stupid idea, OP isn't a psychopath.
The post shows ignorance not malice

      • +1

Look around the world, all the worlds shite hole countries also dont treat their animals well or give them any rights.

The more rights animals the more rights human have. Everybody wins.

Its not a joke or funny to threatened to abuse anyone or anything.

  • +3

We have lots of skinks at our house and we are thankful for them. They eat all the pests in our garden bed. Previous place we had potted plants in an apartment and were always filled with pests that ate all our plants.

  • +1

Would love to see a few at my house. Was lucky enough to catch one sun baking outside the garage. Got an enclosure and kept it for a few days before we released it back into the garden. Totally harmless, my little ones held it in their hands and was patting it constantly.

  • +2

I guess you are talking about the lizards rather than your kids?
Learn a little about your local environment. There are no really harmful lizards in OZ.
There are some (a couple) of spiders to watch out for.
And most of the snakes that you see may be a worry…..
Killing anything that you personally are afraid of isn’t a good strategy for keeping your kids safe.
Google ‘backyard critters (your location), go out and look for them with your kids, and show them what to look out for, and what to be afraid of, and what to not be afraid of. It is part of how your kids will learn to be functioning adults.

  • kill them

Gotta kill those pesky animals that keep the earth in balance! Classic humans!

  • If you intend to eat them, go ahead and kill them. Eat every little bit. If you skip the eating bit, and still kill them either Karma, Godzilla or 'bad medicine' is coming your way.
By the way the lizard family has been having the same conversation in reverse, about the humans in their backyard.

  • +2

You need to introduce a “higher up the food chain” species, such as red bellied black snakes, goannas, tassie devils, bandicoots and maybe even a wedge tailed eagle. These are just a few of the many native species available to help you strive for a pest free and safe environment for your children

    • I actually Lol'd

Mods can you send his IP address to the RCPCA. This asshat is going to kill innocent lizards.

  • +6

OP - what is wrong with you?

  • +4

Do you want snails? Because that is how you get snails.

  • +3

How have you managed to grow into an adult without contact with garden variety reptiles?

  • +9

Plot twist: ShamRaz is an ant. Have some sympathy people. He and his family live in constant fear of the lurking lizards. Every day, ShamRaz sends his children on risky missions to gather food and resources, knowing that they might not return. The lizards strike with lightning-fast precision, catching the unsuspecting ants off-guard, and he has lost many of his offspring over the years. His colony faces a never-ending struggle to survive, and every moment feels like a life-or-death battle against these ferocious predators as ShamRaz and his family fight to protect their young and cling to their fragile existence in the perilous garden. So let's try and help him out.

    • +1

      Migr-ant, apparently.
Rather than being lizarded to death, as others have said, relocation to high rise or offshore would reduce the risk of antipodean lizardosis. Besides once the lizards are erased, what's next birds, all manner of fauna? Anything that moves? (oh of course but not cats. OP probably has 5. (I don't believe they clarified 'kids' as human ones.)

  • +2

But why? They're not poisonous or dangerous. They're tiny lizards lol. They're good for your garden.

  • -1

Our wildlife can be scary for people not born here. As others have said, these lizards are fine. They're more likely to run and hidecthan bite you. They help with controlling insects. You'll get used to them.

    Spiders on the other hand…

  • +1

Don't kill your kids! What a terrible parent.

    • Yeah the punishment for playing with lizards sounded a bit disproportionate to me too, but I guess some parents just can't get a handle on discipline.

  • ohhh dear… another sh*tpost

  • +2

Don't kill them. They are taking care of the Mozzies with dengue

  • -7

Usually I just dig a hole in the backyard. Put a standard 10L bucket in the ground so the top is flush with the ground. Then all you need to do is throw a bunch of bugs in there, the lizards will eat the bugs and get stuck. Also its not a well known fact but they taste absolutely delicious if prepared right. Though they do need to be fried live kinda like a lobster :S

  • +3

What the hell is wrong with some people

  • -3

    IGD, ( intellectual genetic deficiency)
    I blame fluoride and MSG

  • Those are SAND lizards, they're harmless, we have 2 of them running around in the kitchen, hiding under the fridge, washing machines, etc.

  • +4

Chill guys - I think OP just didn't grow up in AU / outdoors….
OP - frankly, no harm unless the lizards you're referring to are komodos or goannas as pointed above
Let your kids roam around with those creatures - you are living in Australia afterall…
That said, watch out for spiders and snakes

    • +1

Well sure, but that doesn't mean he / she has to want to adjust the outdoors to suit their barren vision.
We're talking small lizards not salivating pitbulls.

It's heartening to see so many people aghast at the idea.
Maybe the kids are sooks by way of an insular upbringing and need to interface with nature.
      Ground themselves.

      OP, Go camping OP..
      Binge Attenborough.

      • Next year OP posts another question: "There are so many annoying insects in my backyard, how do I get the skinks back?"

      • Lol

Op should concrete as much of the front and backyard as possible. That'll put a dent in em!

  • You need to drop an atomic bomb on your house to get rid of them. Ask putin.

    • -2

Why would he do that… do they wear little Swastikas!?

  • +6

Next minute: "Why is my garden full of BUGS".

  • Yep no problem.
Simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
You would think snakes are even worse. So to be prepared, make sure you've lined up a type of gorilla that will thrive on snake meat…
Then when wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

    https://youtu.be/LuiK7jcC1fY

  • +6

Kill them and you'll be swamped by flies, beetles, mozzies, spiders and every irritating insect known to man.

    • Wet market?

    • -2

And NO-ONE wants Albo, Wong, Dutton, etc hanging around their home.

  • -2

It’s not this one you are seeing is it? The Asian House Gecko here in Qld is actually an invasive imported species - https://www.business.qld.gov.au/industries/farms-fishing-for…

    • OP is in Sydney so I think unlikely. I grew up in Sydney and we only had skinks and native geckos, whilst things have got warmer I think they don’t have the invasive geckos like we do in QLD.

Now I have a mix of the Asian house geckos and the other two in much smaller numbers in GC. The geckos are cute but poop everywhere and are noisy!

      • They cost me $2000 by laying eggs inside some vital part of my ducted air con system. It shorted out the whole logic board and some big capacitor thing, was all black and burnt…

        • I’ve heard geckos are no good with air con! Could you claim insurance for that?

I hate the random poos they leave around the house too. The skinks don’t come near the house with the geckos either but I see them and a resident blue tongue further away from the house.

  • Leave them alone! They're harmless!
They'll eat the insects, spiders, etc which you're probably more worried about!

  • -2

take it easy folks, wasn't there a time indigenous people were treated likewise, tolerance is another key value of this lucky land and isn't this you want op to learn toward the friendly garden residence, I'm pretty sure op has learned a thing or two on this matter

    • -2

Very average comparison on so many levels. (BTW, still are. Not 'once were'.)

Once rated as fauna, now compared to fauna, to defend the next wave, of people who want to control or force the land (and everything on it) into submission.

Maybe OP can 'tolerate' the nature his backyard.

    • OP should learn something from the volume and tone of the responses.

  • My daughter loves catching them since she was young.
How to get rid of them, catch them all and let them go down the road. Killing them is not wise, karma.

  • +5

The kids are likely to do more harm to the lizards than the lizards are to the kids. Perhaps keep the kids inside to protect the lizards!

  • Get a few pythons and apex birds of prey. they'll take care of the lizards naturally.

or also just relax, no lizard can seriously harm you in your back yard, all you have to do is leave them alone and not stick your fingers in it's mouth (bluetongues will give a nasty bite but again they only do it if you pick them up or stick your fingers in it's face they won't attack you)

  • Just put them up for adoption, you dont need to kill them.

  • Some spiders that you shouldn't kill or removed nor the lizard they're not harmful if you leave them alone.

  • +2

WILL SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!!!!

  • I wonder if the garden lizards are on a forum somewhere asking how to remove destructive humans from their house?

  • these have exploded in population over the past few years, but have also seen less blue tongue lizards.

part of growing up here is playing and catching lizards in the garden

You wont get rid of them, they can travel from your neigbours easily and quickly. I have caught a few as by product but failed to catch the targeted pest, wont mention it otherwise it will give op ideas

I can see why OP thinks they are pests, we had one persistent fker who wanted to make our kitchen his home but he soon moved on when he figured there was no food for him in the house. There was one in mums that got stuck in a lower level, not sure what happened to him but I couldnt find him to rehome

we have had 2 roaches this year, one in the house and one got into the fruit fly trap so they are doing their job

Also, out cat loved to watch them

  • +1

    Are you bloody serious?

  • +1

How do I kill the 30-50 feral hogs lizards that run into my yard within 3-5 mins while my small kids play?

    • Upvote for feral hog reference.

  • +3

Lizards bring good luck. They are the 888 of the reptilian world

  • +1

kill them off and next thing they'll be complaining that there's spiders everywhere (which the lizards used to eat)

  • +1

    OP seems incredibly gullible so…

OP, honestly, you must not kill these lizards. For two reasons.

    1. If you kill them, it attracts more. For every one you kill, ten more will come. Keep killing them and eventually your children will be drowning in an ocean of enraged lizards.

    2. Killing lizards brings a curse on the killer that lasts 10 years per lizard.

So just leave them alone to avoid the lizard plague and the 10,000 year curse that follows, ok?

    • and. The termites drawing the lizards to her house will then explode in numbers, eating all the wood, paper, cardboard and anything cellulose inside the buildings. The lizards are heading off the termite trails just below the surface.

  • +1

I banned the royals from my backyard..havent seen one since. Signed: David Icke

  • I have seen significant increase in garden lizards lately.

    Nice.

I am quite worried as my young kids play there

    Huh?

Oh I get it now. Yeah just teach the kids not to rip them apart. Lizards (and fish) are friends not food.

Any suggestions to get rid of them or kill them naturally?

    Oh wait…

  • +1

This is one heck of a successful troll post.

    • +1

Yes, OP (member for a mere 2 months with 6 posts yet only 14 comments) rolls out the grenade here, f..ks off (last seen 2 days ago), and just lets dozens of us waste our time on here complaining about their apparent ignorance without participating further in the discussion….

      • +1

She's outside setting snares and laying out poison.

      • Intentional or not, its been a great success story and inspiration for trolls to come.

Roll out a simple little ignorance grenade and walk off into the sunset.
Leaving dozens of people triggered and with no closure 😂

  • Move to a high-rise apartment.

  • Sad that someone thinks a tiny little lizard who can barely catch a fly is going to eat them or something.

  • Get off your lazy arse , read some books or call the council and watch your kid if you are that worried about anything instead of taking the lazy easy way out.

    • Why are you calling them lazy, they asked a question?

Are you just trolling people on here because you're bored? Why don't you go for a nice walk instead?

I can't believe how rude you are to strangers. It's flat out ignorant.
