I have done this many times, mainly at the self check out. At certain times/stores/staff they may stop you but the system allows it.

Local opened at 7am, all the $100 cards were gone by the time I rocked up at 7:30am.

Luckily I hid five under the Insta Noods 🍜 the night before.

    • Luckily I hid five under the Insta Noods 🍜 the night before.

And you wonder why they are all gone.

  • Only $250 left at 5 of my nearest Coles this morning

Here's a strategy for the Coles MC Giftcard that I used today and works. (1) Buy the $100 Coles MC GC for $105 and collect the 2000 Flybuys ($10). (2) Add the card as payment in your Paypal. (3) Buy a $100 Woolies GC with the Coles MC GC using the extra 5% deal here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/762305

Net result: Spend $105, get $10 Coles credit (via 2000 flybuys) and $105 Woolies GC. Net "profit" is $10. It would seem you can do this 5 times, but I've only done one $100 card so far.

Out of stock, don't know if or when more stock will come in, not willing to check if you call. Waste of time.

Anyone had luck using Coles gift card bought from prezzee or equivalent to purchase the Coles MasterCard gift card?
I tried this morning and the checkout didn't let me. I chose gift card payment method, scanned the Coles gift card and then message said "please use another payment type. Item(s) in this transaction cannot be purchased using this payment type. Remove item(s) or use another payment type"

I was on a five day break from OzBargain, but I’m back!

I have not tried this myself during this deal. The last time I used a Coles gift card to purchase a Coles Mastercard gift card at a Coles self checkout was June 2022, so I am not of much use…

To be fair, I am not overly surprised to hear that this has happened, because I’ve encountered similar error messages in the past when trying to purchase Google Play gift cards and Telstra SIM cards at a Coles self checkout using a Coles gift card. It was only a matter of time…

        • +1

Yeah self checkout you can't but it seems at a manned register you can. Just tried it tonight.

          • @nightelves: This will make purchases time consuming and more easily stopped by the staff.

          • @nightelves: Do you tell staff you are paying with a Coles gift card (eg from Shopback) to buy the Coles MC?

            • @trixieb: They can see themselves. It's a piece of paper, not a plastic card. I wonder if the Colea Myer Group GC's still work at the self-checkouts.

@Yola: It worked today as well. I chose Card payment.

                  @Neoika: hi.
What gift card did you use?
Was it a physical or digital one?
                  What type of checkout.
                  Thanks

                  • @snorkey: Self

A physical giftcard can be redeemed via Card or Giftcard payment. A digital giftcard must be redeemed via Giftcard payment.

If you are not using a Groceries giftcard, it should still work.

        • I recently found to my surprise that SIM cards seem to be treated as gift cards, and cannot be purchased with an eGift card nor with Flybuys dollars. This is at the self checkout at both Coles and Woolworths.

          • @Chris T: Partially right.

            • @Neoika: Which part?

              • @Chris T: At Woolworths, eGC is redeemable on Vodafone SP, not on Belong SP. It is up to the current setting. The tendency is to exclude all. At Coles, eGC should be redeemable on all. Disclaimer: I did not test all in person.

                • +1

@Neoika: Okay, good to know that some combinations may work. I can report that eGift card did not work on Amaysim starter pack at Woolworths self checkout, and Flybuys dollars did not work on Coles Mobile starter pack at Coles self checkout. This was surprising because the Flybuys terms & conditions only has exclusions for "gift cards, iTunes cards and smoking/tobacco product purchases".

                  • @Chris T: I think Coles treats SIM cards as gift cards in terms of its purchase, because the purchase of SIM cards is treated by Coles as a third-party gift card purchase.

                    • +1

@WookieMonster: There is still difference in that team member discount applies to some SPs like Vodafone and Belong if not all.

                    • @WookieMonster: So I'm guessing you can purchase giftcards using Flybuys dollars?

                      • +1

                        @nightelves: Last month, I couldn't on a self-checkout and staff said no
                        Didn't try the serviced counter

                      • +1

@nightelves: You cannot the POS does not allow it on a servised check out either.

Thanks for the post, had always bought GC at Coles with Coles GC but looks like they closed this hack now, sad times 😥

      • Comments above that the hack still works. Haven't tried before and will check it out if I can find the $100 MC cards

  • Bought 5, 4 got approved and 1 got declined. Instant lost of 250 dollars.

    • Someone hacked you?

      • I think the card may be hacked before activation. Hence, it failed to be activated upon purchase.

        • Did you check the balance?

          • @nightelves: It didn't happen to me. It makes sense if it is the case.

    • I had this happen once and I was immediately refunded with a returns card. You should not lose the money.

  • How long does it take the flybuys points to appear? Transaction from last night still doesn't show

    • Ok it's hit my account. Also got points for the actual gift cards purchase which is nice.

    • Same situation - I rang them and the rep was very helpful - bonus points appeared 5 mins later after their manual adjustment.

    • +3

For future reference, Flybuys points usually arrive at around 5pm on the day after your purchase.

  • I bought 2 x $100 Coles MC this evening and can't add to ShopBack now. Tried 2 different phones and got the same message - "Unable to link card. For security reasons, you can't link this card to this ShopBack account. Use a card from a different issuing bank and try again"

Is anyone having the same issue? I was planning to buy Coles gc from ShopBack

Also can't buy Woolworths gc from RACWA website currently

"We’re performing a system upgrade this weekend
From Friday 6:30pm, 17 March until Monday 20 March many services will be unavailable"

    • Click add more times. If it still does not work, it does not accept it.

      • Tried a few more times but still not working

        • +2

I had this issue last time there was 10% off gift cards.issue appeared to come from shopback end where they would not let me add multiple giftcards in a row as a payment method. If I recall correctly, I had to wait about 4-5 days after adding 2 gc to add another gc from same issuer successfully.

          • @snorkey: Yes, it probably still accepts It. I would like to try adding, but I had one card hacked a few days after adding it to Shopback. I am still unsure if they are related. Hence, I won't add it beforehand now.

            • +1

@Neoika: @snorkey Thanks. Just bought Coles gc from Prezzee with the Coles MC via PayPal. Have to beat the hackers

              • @trixieb: Why not TCN Grocery giftcard or Special giftcard? They are still cashcards that can be used like this.

                • @Neoika: Didn't see the TCN grocery one and forgot about Special. Will check out the TCN one. Thanks

  • Can anyone advise if they got the bonus points on purchase of 5*100 twice on same flybuys account with both transaction on different days?

    • Don't risk. It is common to have 2+ memberships.

Yesterday I used several paper Coles GC's from Prezzee to purchase the Coles Mastercard at a cash self check out. I used 1x $150 and the rest were $100 and I paid $5 cash first. Looks like this hack still works at least at some stores.

  • Can you use multiple Coles Mastercard GC's to pay for an order in store, so spend $200 and pay this amount with 2 x $100 Coles Mastercard GC's?

    • +1

It depends on the store you are at.

There are multiple factors at play, such as:

      • Is the store’s POS1 system able to process more than one Mastercard in a transaction? Most stores can (e.g. Woolworths, BIG W, JB Hi-Fi), but (for example) ALDI cannot do that under any circumstances, and Kmart will not let you do that if you are purchasing a gift card.

      • A staff member at a store may refuse to let you redeem more than one Mastercard for any reason whatsoever, even if their POS system will let them do that. This could be because they do not know how to do that, they do not feel comfortable letting a customer doing that (e.g. a couple of Officeworks staff refused split payments instore and did not give me a clear reason), or they will refuse to let you use a prepaid gift card as a payment method (because that is a payment method that is stereotypically more likely to be associated with fraud).

Which store do you have in mind?

Thanks Wookie, I was thinking Coles however was able to buy some discounted Coles gift cards and spent that way.

        • +3

          Nice!

          For future reference…

          • At Coles self checkouts, you can do split payments between multiple Mastercards unless you are purchasing a gift card (and I think the purchase of SIM cards may also face the same restrictions). When purchasing a gift card, generally speaking, the only type of split payment allowed is cash and one EFT payment (e.g. debit/credit card). You need to spend the cash first (and no change will be given, so you must insert the exact amount of cash you want to spend), then go back to the payment options screen and select the EFT payment you want to do.

          • At Coles serviced checkouts (including the service desk), you can do split payments between multiple Mastercards as long as the staff member knows how to do that and is happy to do that. If you are purchasing a gift card, staff may stop you if they see you trying to use a Coles Mastercard gift card as a payment method, as it is Coles’ store policy to not let customers use Coles Mastercard gift cards to purchase any gift cards at Coles.

          • Keep in mind that Coles has programmed their checkouts to automatically block customers from using Coles Mastercard gift cards to purchase some gift cards (e.g. more Coles Mastercard gift cards), and this restriction is enforced at any Coles checkout. Staff will not be able to get around this restriction, as this restriction is enforced by the payment processor, rather than in the POS system itself.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Also, the system stopped me from purchasing a Coles Myer Group GC.

            • +1

@Yola: I am sure that it is still possible @ Kmart, Liquorland (plus 1% instore cashback after register the card on CR), etc.

Fo those using these cards to pay ATO. Yesterday I was able to use 10 $100 GC at MyGov. Used to be 5.

    • By any chance do you know if Vanilla gift cards (the ones on 10% off sale at Coles on Wednesday) are accepted by ATO for tax? Unsure whether to buy more of these Coles Mastercard or wait till Wednesday.

      • You need to look at the Vanilla deal page. WookieMonster gives the answer.
