Not an all time low, but the cheapest it's been in a good while. Usually hovers around $89 and is currently cheaper than the more basic Elements model at $79.

Personally I prefer WD over Seagate, but I'll leave it to the comments to prove me wrong!

    WD > Shitgate

  • Shuckable or USB on board?

Been SoL before attempting to recover data from a portable drive but found they couldn't be cracked open and connected via SATA.

    • Western Digital pressure drives like this all have the USB connector soldered on. Definitely avoid.

The fact that you can purchase a 1Tb SSD for about the same price as this indicates this is an awful deal; nobody should buy this drive.

unless of course your motherboard doesn't have any available ports, or heaven forbid you need portable data drives.

Then you buy a Seagate which can be shucked, or something with significantly better value than $37.50 per Tb.

heaven forbid you need portable data drives

If portability is important then an SSD makes even more sense since you immediately remove the ongoing risk of damage due to movement and vibrations. If you need capacity then a bigger drive will have up to 50% better value per Tb.

If you're competent enough to use a NAS, then you should clearly understand this drive is the worst of value, shuckability and longevity.

@Switchblade88: If I was given any seagate drives, I'd throw them in the bin. Please show me a 2TB SSD for the same price? For portability and price, these types of drives are adequate and barring knocking them while connected to a PC they should last for a few years at the least. Not everyone has the deep pockets you're professing to buy solid states drives or NAS.

    • I believe most if not all 2.5" portable drives now have the usb controller as part of the drive controller. the bigger 3.5" drives however are mostly the same as normal 3.5" PC drives and can be shucked.. that's mostly what I have in my NAS.

  • I normally get Western Digital My Passport series for its encryption functionality and have the password set before anyone can open the drive. do you guys know if this can be achieved with any other drive ?
