Remember to read what insurance cover is included and if you need extra cover.

    • +27

There is no insurance. Car Next Door were insured through Insuret, a third party insurance company. Before rebranding, Mobility Mutual was established. Uber + Mobility Mutual claim that this model is to remove the "friction" that insurance companies are subject to, but that friction that insurance companies must overcome is there to protect consumers.

      Mobility Mutual is;

      • Not covered under the Insurance Act 1973;

      • Not subject to the prudential standards set by APRA or the Insurance Contracts Act 1984; and,

      • Has discretion over whether to approve or reject a given claim, despite their bias.

        Thanks.

My point was raising awareness of the lack of insurance.

          I know, I'm just explaining further :)

          • +4

@besttraveltech: Did they start an insurance company then just state in their condition of service "this isn't covered under the insurance act?"

I would implore my fellow ozbargainers to report this to ACCC with me.

      • Damn that’s good to know. I’d assume any car rental place has insurance. So you’d have to get your own temporary insurance?

    • +1

If you have rental car insurance included as part of your credit card, would Uber Carshare be covered? Or does Car share come under an excluded category. I had a look at Amex Travel insurance and couldn't see any exclusions as such about peer to peer car rentals…

    High yield investment?

    • +9

Yes so I can test drive a Tesla before I purchase my BMW because I work at a bank I need a high yield investment to ensure everyone knows how successful I am.

      • +1

Yeah I still remember that post, a lot of head scratching.

        Whatever happened in the end?

      • Wasn't it a AMG Merc? I can't remember now

      • Also, don't forget you you don't care at all about trying to impress people, but you think pulling up in a Merc will make a good impression.haha

      • Pepperridge remembers

    • Absolutely!

$200 could work out to be free car hire, which is great. But don't put your cars on this platform.

If you want to know more, join the Car Sharers Australia group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/carsharersaustralia/

  • Have the account setup how to apply the code please. Thanks

  • +4

    lol
They charge like 50c/km on top of the hire fee on many cars. That's like $50/100km or 29L/100k's

    Thats ridiculous.

May as well get a standard uber and have someone do the driving

    • The distance rate varies great from car to car. It does include fuel and roadside assist. You're definitely better going elsewhere if you're going be driving intercity, but if you're taking the family to the beach, it's better to get a $30 car and pay 40c/km than to pay $60 with the distance included and have to pay fuel on top.

      • +3

Or just get a hire car for less from Budget/Hertz/Thrifty etc.

        • +1

It really depends on your use case. Is it worth paying $15 each way for an Uber Rideshare to/from the Thrifty depot when you have a share car on your street? That's just one example… What if you only need to book for an hour or two to pick something up from the shops, and it works out to be <$20, vs $60+ for Thrifty hire.

I'm agnostic about which platform to go with. I'm more than happy to crap on Uber (you can see I have repeatedly), but there are use cases where each platform is better than another.

Take Riide for example. No-one else operates like Riide where you can drop off a Riide car anywhere, just like a Lime scooter. More expensive, but more convenient if you're going one-way.

I started using uber car share , but stopped after a trip to the beach. It was typically working out way more expensive than expected.
Now using popcar almost exclusively. Way cheaper than uber, cars are typically better and none of the malarkey of taking photos at the beginning and end of the trip. Goget is also cheaper and better!

Cheapest I could find for a Tesla 3 for 24 hrs is $102.69 + 33.0c/km plus insurance comes to $252.69 minus $200 voucher equals $52.69 plus $66 if I do 200kms for a total of $118.69. If the insurance wasn’t dodgy I’d maybe take the bait The only problem is that suspiciously all the dates I checked within the next 2 months to make the voucher valid are booked out. After the 2 months availability suddenly appears.Uber have to be in the top 5 dodgiest companies in the world.

    • Car owners set the blockout time. In the past there was an option to contact the owner to "slot in" some bookings, not sure if it's still there

  • +3

Dodgy experience with this platform (as a car sharer), so wouldn't risk it.

      storytime.

        Here you go!

I rented out my ute on this platform, they were running a deal last year where they paid out 1.5k per month for the two months it was up, so long as it was available for rent.

Sweet, make some money out of my idle car right?

Was great, barely went out, got paid the 1.5k the first month, and then all sweet the next month… until about a week before the promotion ended, it got hired out to someone who racked up 1700km in 5 days and blew a radiator hose, cooked my engine.

Still working through the rebuild, which will cost about 4k, and didn't get paid the second 1.5k missed it by a day.

        fun times.

        • OK so by the sounds of it you would've made a killing had the radiator hose not blown (not really the company's fault then). Would've been a sweet $510 on top of the rental from that as well.

          • @Drakesy: Yeah, no ones fault, she has 360k on the clock, so bound to happen, when i put it back up i'll have a high km rate and low daily hire to discourage massive kms, happy for people to use it for dump runs and bunnings lol

Are people who already had a Car Next Door account (and had made trips back then) eligible?

    • I couldn't get it to work, and I had a trip last year Jul + Dec

  • +2

We should list a couple of cars on the platform at $200 per hour and book them out solid for the next 45 days straight. 12 hours a day x $200 x 45 days x 2 cars = a quick $216,000 to fund the next ozbargain meetup.

  • +2

Fun fact. If you sign up with this promo code but then use the same promo code again when booking your first booking, it applies the promo code twice and you get $200 x2 = $400 in driving credits.

I'm looking at my $400 driving credit balance now, minus my first booking costs….

    • +2

also code ONEUCS134 for $250 credits. $500 credits with the above.

      • wow…. amazing glitch.
