The wise camels say its a good price

This is a good cheap SSD for reviving old devices that still run SATA hard drives (eg. an old laptop) or for adding a bit of storage to a raspberry pi (cheap SATA to USB adapter from AliExpress required)

If you want something sata to serve as a daily boot drive I would direct you to the Crucial MX500 or similar

Update: Has been ozbargained, now on backorder (sorry I couldnt update last night, it was giving me some store changing issue)

  • even cheaper than USB Flash Drives

    • +1

You will still need an adaptor if you want to use it like a USB flash drive.

  • If you can't wait the several months for an adapter from AE, this one worked fine with the larger 480gb version of this drive with a pi4 without a usb hub. Been running fine for several months so far as the power draw is low enough.

    • That's an enclosure.

I bought and adaptor from AliExpress for under $1 as a new user

Bought 2 in November from Amazon under $20 each. Can't review performance though because I haven't used them yet

Sounds like you spend money for the sake of spending money. I blame you for inflation.

Oh please you've been here since 2008 don't you know how Ozbargain works by now 😂

        • Yes unfortunately

        • -1

OzBargain use to be about being frugal and clever with money. This moronic mentality of pissing money away and destroying your financial security in the future is relatively new.

          • @PainToad: Dude you honestly need to relax. Spending $38 for two backup SSDs isn't "pissing money away" nor "destroying financial security".

I get that your financial situation may be so tight that spending $38 will mean you can't pay bills or rent, but I save a lot more than I spend.

I would say you sound jealous but that makes no sense because it really is not a lot of money lol people spend that on one meal at a restaurant.

            • +1

@pennypincher98: Lol, not jealous, if I needed one, I would buy one. But it wouldn’t matter if I was homeless or secretly Gerry Harvey under cover, I wouldn’t be stupid with money.

Spending $38 for two backup SSDs isn't

It’s not about single purchases, it’s about pattern behaviour that accumulates.

              • @PainToad: And you felt the need to comment because I spent $38 on a single purchase. I've studied economics, marketing and psychology I know what you're trying to get at (in an admittedly basic way) but you don't know my purchase habits or full finances.

I don't need to disclose or explain anything to you but seeing as you've got that stick shoved so far up your arse it's drawing blood I can always sell later for $20 each and I would be making a profit.

I'd understand your concept if I was ordering dinner every night off Doordash lol but physical products don't become worthless the moment you buy them.

You say you're not jealous, but you obviously have such an emotional investment in this conversation and I'm curious why you care so much about a situation you've made up in your head. Perhaps it's because the RBA's decisions make you feel powerless and you now feel the need to try and authorise other people's life choices.

                • @pennypincher98: If you actually looked, I wasn’t responding about your comment about this particular purchase. I was responding to you comment about the ozBargain community in general.

                  • @PainToad: No let's get to the bottom of how you feel because I'm intrigued now and how it elicited such a response. Are you just looking fondly back at the days before it got more popular and the pressures of society weren't so realised?

                    • @pennypincher98: 1) yes I miss the old days of OzBargain.
                      2) yes I hate seeing people waste their money, because they’re are more likely to be the idiots with low super in the future expecting the government to increase the taxes on people who were sensible, to fund their mistakes.

                      • @PainToad: Okay that's a good start and while I know change can be scary it can also be good.

At the risk of appearing heartless, why does it matter to you? It's not your life they're screwing up and not your problem. People living on the dole have expected a sizeable increase for years, government won't because work is necessary for a functional society. Quite frankly by the time these people reach retirement age they won't be able to retire. They can whinge all they want but even if legislation was to come in that's quite a long process and they'll need more money short term.

                      • @PainToad: well, I bought three Ollee laptops!

  • Did I buy the last one

  • had a kingston SSD more than once. fried within 2-4 years

    • +1

My Kingston 128gb ssd still running perfect after 5 years (daily), constantly writing to it everyday. Hasn't let me down yet

  • Do I need one? No. Did I buy one? Yes.

    • Why did you need to tell us you wasted money? Are we meant to be impressed?

      • +1

How is it a waste of money if the product can still be used? If it's not used, it can be sold.

God imagine gatekeeping what other strangers on the internet can spend their own money on. What a world we live in.

Bloody hell, a 256gb SSD ran me $250 back in 2012. We live in the future!

    • Your 256GB SSD will outperform this and likely outlive this - DRAMless SSD's are basically useless.

I used to say that they were good as externals - but they're too slow for sequential read/write (I have one), they're too slow to really be a boot drive in anything but the cheapest of cheap laptops (E.G Parents, Car Diagnostics laptop - bonus is no moving parts for when logging things live) - but overall it's really just better to spend the extra bit. I know that's not very Ozbargain of me but you'd regret buying this for anything but the most basic of old systems.

I'd treat it as a large SD card as opposed to an SSD.

      • There aren't any SSDs with dram at this price point though. This is plenty fast for a windows boot drive

        • Of course, but you're just better off spending the extra $20 in my opinion.

  • Is this better when compared to the Crucial MX500?

    • +3

MX500 will blow rings around this - BX500 is the equivalent model to this.

  • Price is back to $33.98 for me now

    • +2

try switching it to the amazonau seller

      • +1

        Thanks, ordered now

  • meh 1tb is about $50 now just got one for backups

    • +1

Lol. Either you’re talking about a HDD or you got scammed by one of those fake drives.

      • no I been following them for a while, was $80/tb last yr just dropped to$55. I said I was waiting for $50/tb so close enough

        • Are you referring to buying a 1TB ssd for $50, or on average per 1TB is $50 if a higher capacity ssd is bought? There’s a difference

          • @Ebaygiftcards: 1tb is probably sweet spot 2tb is more expensive

retailers not dropping price maybe but on aliexpress there has been significant drop

            • @abctoz: I agree, but no way you can just get a 1TB SSD for $50.

              • @Ebaygiftcards: just search 1tb ssd on aliexpress there are tons of them

                • +1

                  @abctoz:

                  aliexpress

                  🤦

Pretty much all “SSDs” on there are actually SD cards with hacked firmware to fake their size inside a plastic shell to make them look like SSD drives.

Even the ones that happen to be real SSD, the storage size is still faked in Windows.

                  https://youtu.be/raLqUsasn6o

                  • @PainToad: lol ok, I'll know but I'm not stressing over $50, the prices have been within $20 of western brands for years

the doomers here are usually wrong I've bought a lot of hardware off there, believe it or not ppl in China use computers too, crazy thought!

                    • @abctoz:

but I'm not stressing over $50

What you should be stressing about is losing your data and/or getting a corrupt OS.

believe it or not ppl in China use computers too

Yes, but not these fake drives. Reputable manufacturers also sell in China too.

Ultimately so what you want. But don’t spread BS to others telling them to buy these scam drives.

                      • @PainToad: I'll use it for big games/programs don't really care if it dies, these are not fast drives

I'm also curious how long these will last, but I'll bet money it's longer than anybody here is expecting.

A scam drive? I'll use a scam drive if it does the job

do you got any other scam products you recommend I'll be happy to check out

                        • @abctoz: You just don’t get it do you?

You’ve paid for a small drive that’s been made to look like 1TB. Try filling the drive up and it will fail.

                          • @PainToad: I'll bet you 10000 it's not a scam drive
