a $50 Amazon Fire max can do everything this can do

    • +3

No it can't. You need to sideload Kayo and Binge (not available on Amazon) and even then it doesn't work all the time.

      • +1

Foxtel apps are always very buggy in every platform.

Most people buy Shield for Kodi. Fire 4k Max can play double dolby fluently.

  • +4

I bought one for couch gaming last year, just in time for NVIDIA to drop support for local streaming. Not sure if that factors in for anyone (i.e. if it's for gaming rather than streaming content).

  • +2

Whatever you do, do NOT upgrade firmware on this thing.
New firmware is ad filled junk interface.
I havent updated mine since about version 8.1 or 8.2 whatever, but it works 100% and no ads.
Have a look at the whinging going on , on the Nvidia forums on that issue… oh well suck sh$t for jumpin in and updating firmware without reading the changelog fools haha.

      8.2.3 baby!

its a bit of a turd to downgrade but i've done both of ours (2017 and 2019 models).

disable automatic app updates and never update the home screen app. its fast, no ads and stable.

      • Mine was awesome but upgraded to 9 and that was such a cluster (profanity) after recovering everything I never upgraded again. Been on 9 for years with no issues other than a few bugs.

    • I don't spend that much time in the home screen. Having Google Play Services disabled, removes the ads.

if all you're doing is streaming stuff from netflix / disney / etc - apple tv is a win.

if you're wanting to stream 4k remuxes via plex and have the ability to passthrough truehd / dts-x etc and get dolby vision etc - the obvious (only?) choice is the shield

  • Excellent price.. getting a bit long in the tooth but chromecast or similar even outside the android eco system does not compare.. two different kind of media players in terms of hardware and software both. Zidoo is probably the only manufacturer beating this in terms of play back quality. If prices are going South maybe a new model is around the corner. But obviously if you just want to stream stuff and your TV doesnt have netflix or doesnt allow side loading then chromecast works just fine.. though fire TV 4k at a lower price does the same.

    • I wonder if it's actually because GameStream is no longer supported https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/support/shield-tv/gamest…

      • Not into gaming.. no idea .. but this thing has held its price with very few variations in southern direction ever since launch.. and with good reason.. Playback quality of digital media is still amongst the best in home use barring zidoo and maybe a media player of any sort with hdfury

  • I have a shield tv 4K the little Tube one
Any reason to upgrade to the pro?

    • Unless you have any issues or want to run a Plex server on it, probably not, no. Some people found the Tube one struggled with very large Blu-Ray rips (not sure if that's still the case on the latest software version).

      • +2

Or if you want to plug in an external usb drive

        • +1

Yeah i have both and have found the main difference is the no usb drive.

  • How does this compare to the Fire tv 4k max?

Fwik…Fire tv doesn't support large external drives and can't get YouTube music app

  • +3

I have this, the Shield tube, 2017 Shield, Fire TV 4K max and Chromecast TV (I love my movies) and this is by far the best of all machines. I couldn't believe the improvement in the picture quality on my LG OLED TV when I upgraded from the 2017 Shield to the Shield Pro. The upscaling is amazing.

The current Shield Pro is the only device that will handle Dolby Digital. All other machines will output it with a pink tinge (this was the reason why I upgraded).

The Amazon devices are great but Amazon is locking them down. You used to be able to install your own launchers but they are stopping this. Binge and Kayo aren't on the Amazon store also and can only be sideloaded.

I use Plex a lot and this works perfectly with it.

    • I have the 4K tube and it handles true hd, dolby Visio and atmos

      • Maybe there is something wrong with mine as it showed a pink tinge when I tried it

    • How does it compare to the native plex app on the LG OLED?

      • Sorry. Don't use any apps on the LG. The Shield is much better experience

  • Can I stream games from my PC to this?

  • +3

Love my shield pro for all my Kodi and streaming needs beats all other crap out there.

  • +3

    I love my Shield.

  • How does this compare to the Amazon fire stick 4K max or whatever the top one is, been working amazing for me with my LG CX and Q990B

  • Does the Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4K Media Player come with the updated triangular remote?
Or is that an upgrade option?

    • +2

      Yes.

      • Sorry, terrible wording on my question
Does it have the updated triangular remote? (which is what I think you are saying yes too)

  • Agh just bought this for 280 a week ago on Amazon

    • 28 Degrees price protection?

      • +1

        That's a yes for me :)

    • -1

Return it… Or buy this and return the one from Harvey Norman to Amazon (as it will potentially be sealed)

  • Anyone tried adapters to be able to connect a regular antennae through to this?

    • -1

There isn't any way that would work. It's not a TV tuner.

      • +3

Not directly. There are boxes like hdhomerun that let you steam free to sure tv over a network. You can then use something like emby to view them on the shield.

    • Not exactly what you’re asking. But you can stream most via Kodi or dedicated apps. The only limitation is some sport (AFL for example isn’t broadcast on their streams)

      https://www.matthuisman.nz/2017/07/australia-iptv-epg-files.…

      • Yeah that’s pretty much my main reason for wanting FTA tv unfortunately.

    • if you get a hd homerun, you can integrate it so FTA can be watched via the "livetv" app

      • Have you got one set up by chance? There’s limited info for Australia I can find

        • +1

i do, its what we use to watch free to air

          • buy a hdhomerun, set it up on your network
          • install the hdhomerun app your shield
          • run the "live tv" app on your shield and it'll find all the channels via the hdhomerun app

thats it. super easy, and works nicely

          • @jztilly: Hey, that's interesting! So this would allow me to watch a broadcast footy match on my tablet through live TV without having to subscribe to kayo? That sounds nice, but not particularly cheap).

          • @jztilly: Ok great thanks for the help! Might pick one up to go with a shield. Looks like the HDHomeRun connect would be fine rather than needing the flex version

  • I have the new Fire Cube, it works amazing for everything and is cheaper than the Shield.

    • its close, but no dts support

  • +4

Amazon Price matched, just picked it up there.

  • Dang.. just bought this at $278 via Amazon couple of weeks back >_<

  • TGG wouldn't price match as it's under their cost price apparently. @doweyy

    • Oh really I was thinking to get one from TGG. Did you call them or went to a store?

      • +1

        Called.

      • +1

Try now if you haven't already, see comments below.

        • Thanks mate will call them tomorrow:)

    • +2

Sorry only just got to this, I just gave them a call on the sales line (1300 942 765) and they matched HN without issue.. So maybe try give them another call and you should be fine.

      • Thanks, was successful this time, I guess the guy I talked to this morning must've thought I was trying to price beat it, not match.

        • +2

Nice :) Yep I got the talk about not being able to beat, but only match, so potentially was the issue this morning. Glad to hear it worked out in the end.

          • @doweyy: Thanks for mentioning the Zip offer as well! Do we need to pay over the phone or at store when picking up to qualify the Zip offer? Is the Zip offer is limited to 1 per Zip account or? My family need 2 of them but only me have a Zip account, easy to get two TGG Storecash account thoguh:)

            • @1000060: I believe it should work fine if you either order with the link received over the phone or if you buy in store, you just need to ensure that you:

              1. Make sure you have signed up for StoreCash and download the Digital Wallet.
              2. Ensure to use the same mobile number that you have provided when you sign up and use it to order online or give it to the clerk at checkout to apply for the offer.

I would assume it's once per Zip account, but maybe it's once per Storecash holder.. Not 100% sure.

      • +1

Thanks doweyy. This worked for me after initially calling the store yesterday to see if they would price match to which they rejected saying no stock was available at my nearest store. Called the sales line after i saw your comment and they matched it with no issues :) Paid with zippay and its ready to collect. Now to wait for the $50 storecash to be credited….all up $168 is not a bad price at all…

        • It is very good price mate. I will try to do it tomorrow. Thanks you and doweyy.

        • Hi mate, did you get your storecash yet? If so, how long does it take in your case? Thanks

          • +1

@zozuc: Got $50 storecash last week and have used it now - no issues

            • @Optimus Prime: Thanks mate. I just chased them and gave me $50 in credit, which is expired this month!

  • +1
