20% off Lifetime Plex Pass A$127.99 @ Plex

320
LUCKYDAY23

Just got this email and thought it might help some people out:

"Get 20% Off a Lifetime Plex Pass. For 3 days only get a Lifetime Plex Pass for less than $100 USD.* That’s an offer as good as (or probably even better than) gold—considering that your collection of movies, shows, and music is your most valued treasure. Use code: LUCKYDAY23"

Deal ends at 11:59pm on the 17th of March, which if my late night math is right means around 5:59pm Sydney time on the 18th of March for us.

Not the cheapest it's been (I've seen 25% off every so often, which comes down to $119.99), but it's an option.

Also not going to be for everyone compared to the alternatives, but for me I've been using plex for years and have loved it, so thought maybe someone else might benefit from it :)

Sorry if I've got any formatting wrong, I don't post often - happy to fix things up if need be!

Can I ask what does it do? I'm able to stream my entire library to all my devices on I guess the free tier?

    • It let's you set up a media server that you can watch your content anywhere - there are some differences on what devices can watch on the free tier (you can't watch on mobile for free), and plex pass has some other things that can make the experience nicer, but at the end of the day it's about watching your content how you want where you want

There's more but the useful bits i'd say are the HW transcoding, Skip Intros and Skip credits.

I used plex for the longest time free and only bought plex pass for the skip intro which is extremely useful if you like to binge watch entire seasons in one go

      • Honestly, the skip intro (and now credits) are so handy even when not binging. Netflix got me too used to it so I'm glad I can do it with my own content :-P

      https://support.plex.tv/articles/201751006-plex-pass-feature…

The main one is probably Downloads to mobile devices. Though at times that has been frustratingly slow to use.

There's a bunch of other things wihch in themselves probably don't justify the cost unless you're streaming to lots of people outside your household.

I've got a pretty extensive music collection and travel a lot for work and I find PlexAmp to be an outstanding music streaming app

  • honestly at this point it might be better to do yearly and wait for Linus' take?

Yeah, I’m genuinely curious because I have no idea why anybody would want to be involved in this or any faith that the company will be around long enough to make this worthwhile.

      No offence to OP.

None taken. I've had a plex pass for many years and for me, it's the perfect solution for what I'm after. Admittedly I don't use the download functionality, so can't comment on that issue like Linus has, but for me, there hasn't been another option for what I've been able to do, and even moving forward nothing beats plex for my use case.

Of course, everyone is different and plex isn't for some, but that's ok.

Definitely interested in the future of plex though - while it's the best for me, it's still not perfect, and I definitely understand where LTT is coming from with everything - hopefully his call out will make them be a better company overall, as that'll be a win win for everyone :-)

There's things I hate. Like their top feature request that if it was a human would be old enough to write itself. But as per Linus (as of a month ago) it still seems to be the least frustrating out there. If someone has an alternative that is genuinely better in all the ways I care about I'd switch to someone else in an instant.

I had the same reservations about them 5 years ago. Things just don't seem to move fast in this space. In many ways it's better now than then (interface/skip intro), but in others (eg their promoted content which each user has to manually hide from their homescreen) it's worse.

I've never had the download feature outright broken, but it wasn't ever smooth to use, though last time I looked, it seemed to work competently. Only used that particular new version once for a flight so not sure if a fluke.

Honestly I think they're more likely to be around with the increasing number of streaming services and their crackdowns on sharing accounts. Things like lifetime offers does impact that ability to keep existing eventually though. They have to keep some users monthly or keep growing that install base or eventually they die.

I think they'll probably be around in 2 years. The question is how they'll monetise enough (without ruining it) to be around in 10 years.

We use plex and it's been solid - what's the problem / potential problem?

    • Who and what?

    • He did one pretty recently actually with a few different options.

    Jellyfin does the job

I would say that comes with caveats - it's not a one size fits all. I set up plex first, and then maybe about 6 months ago set up JF as a comparison and it was not for me. I had a bunch of issues with it, and I lost access to a bunch of nice features that I had through plex. I ended up closing that server down and haven't touched it since, sticking only with plex.

That said, for those who have it and it works nicely for them, that's great, but it's not necessarily as simple as JF is better than plex is every department. But, given that, competition is always good, and open source competition even more so, so while JF wasn't for me, I'm going to be keeping an eye out for it, and once I can get feature parity without losing any conveniences, I'll probably switch over

I come in peace, not here to start a home streaming war.

But to anyone looking to invest into plex, i would recommend trialling the big 3 (Plex, Emby & now Jellyfin), once you have trialled all 3, then decide which one you want to go with.

I'd even recommend taking it 1 step further and letting your end users (in my case my family) decide based on a 2 week trial of each. As the less tech savy ones are usually the first ones to complain or the ones you are spending more of your time assisting you are going to want to make sure they are comfortable with it.

After my family testing both Plex & Emby (Jellyfin didn't exist back then) they actually prefer Emby, so i then paid for the lifetime premium account for Emby.
Again, i'm not dissing on Plex, just think you should try before you buy and make the most informed decision based on that.

    • That's a very good point and a great way to test them all out. I did a similar thing about 6 months ago, but tested the back and front end, because at the end of the day, I also want to have a good time managing the content for my users. We didn't try Emby, but did start a new Jellyfin server to compare to the existing Plex one I have, and my users and I all chose Plex based on our usage. YMMV though, so setting up at least a couple of these at the same time is a great idea!

  • I was unaware Linus did a Jellyfin vs. Plex vid so… thanks. I think…
