  • It would be a week after I bought one for $910, haha. Fantastic deal.

1 year warranty. Should be longer than that. I’ve had to RMA so many ubiquiti things at this point. Having only 1 year for something that’s almost $1000 seems a bit rich.

    • Warranty's won't work like that in Australia anymore.
It has to last a reasonable amount of time and for a $1000 router that would be much more than a year.

Can I ask what you guys use these for apart from basic routing?

A pretty all in one dashboard for switches and APs if you're completely on UBNT, a slightly more advanced firewall than your average. They're definitely targeted at your more 'prosumer'/small/medium business, or if you're getting (some places) multi-gig connections from your ISP, they have a bigger firewall capacity

    • Also security system if you are using their cameras, wifi access devices etc - PoE ports are great.

      • I just upgrading to 1000/50 and found out my Unifi USG can't handle DPI (for security) over 90-100mbps. These guys can do past 1000.

        • The pro but non SE edition also on sale but I think it's been for less previously.

          • +3

@Drj55: I'd pay the extra for the SE if I was buying right now as the SE has the 3.x firmware and the UDM Pro is still only on 2.x. There's some pretty significant features missing between 2.x and 3.x and lots of the app updates can't be installed due to only being supported on 3.x. Ubiquiti have been promising for a while that the UDM Pro will be upgraded to 3.x, but it's been like 6 months which is quite disappointing.

            • @nathanos: Wow thanks for this. I've been waiting for a sub-$600 deal on the Pro (I don't need the SE hardware features), but it's disappointing to hear the support is lagging on the firmware side. I'll need to reconsider my decision!

Yes, the Ubiquiti Dream Machine is a versatile networking device that can be used for a variety of purposes beyond basic routing. Here are some examples:

Network Security: The Dream Machine includes a built-in firewall that is more flexible than standard routers, VPN server, and threat management features such as intrusion detection and prevention. This makes it ideal for securing small to medium-sized networks against cyber threats.

Wireless Access Point: The Dream Machine also includes flexibility for wireless access points, making it easy to provide high-speed Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home or office and ease of expanding with more APs.

Network Management: The Dream Machine comes with a user-friendly web interface that allows you to manage your network settings, monitor network performance, and view detailed analytics with far more detail than a standard router..

Home Automation: If you have smart home devices that require a reliable network connection, the Dream Machine can be used to manage and control these devices.

Remote Work: The Dream Machine supports remote access with built in VPN as well as remote management of the router, allowing you to securely connect to your network from anywhere in the world.

Video Surveillance: The Dream Machine can be used as a central hub for managing IP cameras and video surveillance systems.

Overall, the Ubiquiti Dream Machine is a powerful and flexible networking device that can be used for a variety of purposes beyond basic routing.
It's a great 'prosumer' network ecosystem.

For me personally; I work in the IT industry and corss over many of the IT roles each day. So I tend to want do carry these skills over into my home/office network.

    Dont do it buggy crap!

Get a aliexpress box and use opnsense if you want enterprise grade

    • How so? My UDM SE has been rock solid.

    • My Unifi AP went buggy recently, and getting the support is none to existence. Too bad, its a good hardware but the support is putting me off.

  • Or even consider much cheaper Omada solution :)

A previous OzB commenter on a similar deal helped enlighten me towards this SMB solution.

    • im currently looking into a Omada solution, can anyone running one tell me what kind of speeds they are getting on 1g nbn connection ?

  • Just signed up to Afterpay, and the maximum I can spend is $600 :(

      1. Can you get the Afterpay discount if you pay part of it on Afterpay?
      2. What are the fees associated with Afterpay if you pay if off immediately?
        1. Looks like you have to pay in full using Afterpay
        2. Not sure.

To confirm, it's Afterpay that has applied a maximum spend of $600 (I have the funds to spend but obviously want the discount).

    • Thankfully my partner has been a member since 2017 and has a higher Afterpay limit

      Thanks OP

    • So do we have a solution for those of us new to Afterpay? Great price, just not signed up to Afterpay yet.

      • I'm not 100% sure if Afterpay applies the same limit ($600) to all new accounts, but in my case no :(

        DC

      • Buy some eBay gift cards (ShopBack regularly have 2% off and occasional bonus cash backs) to get yourself under your Afterpay limit, then use Afterpay for the balance.

    • You can still pay for things > $600, just the first payment would be higher as you’ll need to pay off the overflow first.

Currently pay-off everything immediately has no fees involved and you still get the full discounts. However if I recall correctly they may restrict your account in some ways if you “take advantage” too often. I got one of my BNPL service (can’t remember which one, but don’t think it’s Afterpay) restricted once that I’ll have to contact their customer support to pay in full immediately. Then I never use that service since.

Note even though they say they don’t care about your credit report, I was once asked about my spending with BNPL by my credit card and loan bank. I assume there’s a potential that your borrowing power may be affected by BNPL.

      • Banks have recently said they will be taking BNPL limits into account for serviceability on new loans.

I believe the smaller banks/lenders have been doing it for a while, but the big 4 were mostly ignoring it up until recently.

        • ANZ (my loan comes from) certainly look into these things. Though once I tell them about the discounts and point out those immediate payments on the statements they told me it’s fine.

Though I can see the potential impact on frequent users.

          • @xmagic: Suncorp asked about my Afterpay purchase too - just explained it was a big discount on a WFH item and didn't hear any objections or issues from it

  • How loud are these?

  • Have tried expensive "gaming" routers etc. Since going for unifi my wifi and networking experience got so much better. Installed the cameras too. Other wifi/camera systems may offer more individual features, but unifi is rock solid, haven't had to do the "turn it off and on" like I've had to with other systems.

  • Just a heads up that I bought a pair of AirPods Pro 2 from the seller on 16 March 2023 and they turned out to be grey import with only 10 months of warranty left.

    • From Wireless1.. That's really weird but worth taking note of.
I've not had such issues with Wireless1 before.

  • Anyone bought one? If so when did you place the order and have they shipped yet?

I ordered Thu night 16/03. Paid but it still hasn't shipped yet…

    • Yeah I haven't got shipping yet either and my first payment's gone through Afterpay.

I noticed the ebay invoice I have has this note though under shipping method

eBay Shipping - Standard Parcel Delivery - Registered | Ship By Date: Apr 17, 2023, 13:59:59

      • I ordered on the morning of the 16th and haven't received notice of the item being dispatched.

I also ordered 2 x Ubiquiti direct attach 0.5 cables from Wireless One later on and they HAVE both been dispatched.

I also ordered a Ubiquiti Pro POE 24 port switch via the Wireless1 website rather than Ebay on the 15th and that hasn't been dispatched yet wither.

        • +1

Hmmm… fingers crossed they have the physical stock and start shipping ASAP and not simply waiting for a drop ship

          • @nickxau: Yeah, I hate waiting for gear like this to arrive.
I hate noticed a lot of stuff shipped between states has been oddly slow of late too.

          • @nickxau: It's on the way! Just got my tracking number!

            • @itsTricky83: Hey hey! I like! Very niiice!

Just got my shipping notification and tracking not too long ago too. ETA 26/03 - Sunday??

Hopefully I get it before then so I have something to play with this weekend…

              • +1

@nickxau: Ebay states "Arriving by Wed 26 Apr"…
                eBay is high on something!
Be sure to check out Mactelecom's guides on YouTube

                • @itsTricky83: Yeah mine says 26th April as well… Tracking hasn't got any info yet though so we'll see where it's actually coming from…

                • @itsTricky83: Ah crap! I was just so excited it shipped I thought it said 26/03.

Good suggestion about Mactelecom. I watch his vids too!

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you guys buy from one of the other sellers that was cheaper by $1 with faster delivery timeframe?

                  • @nickxau: That was quick! Delivered!?

                    • @nickxau: I think eBay just doesn't have accurate postal times. Mine says tracking number provided 11:02am today, but it's with Startrack so ebay's estimated date is 26th Apr. Startrack tracking shows it's onboard for delivery at 9:55am today.

As for why I bought with wireless1, I had purchased stuff from them years ago with no problems (albeit not on eBay). I dont think anyone else was $1 cheaper at the time though? I thought they were all at the same price

                      • @aragornelessar: Mine isn't here yet, although I am in Tassie.
My ubiquiti direct attach cables rocked up though, of which I purchased on the same day.

                  • @nickxau: I guess I only spotted this Wireless1 deal and not the other merchants. I've purchased from Wireless1 a few times and generally found them reliable ebough.

                    • @itsTricky83: Shopping Express and Futu Online (same seller) had it for $953 but I refused to buy from those jackers as EVERY SINGLE TIME there was a promo they'd be the first to jack their prices and not just a bit. By A LOT!

Obviously they're doing it to get the upper hand during these promotions but I didn't buy from them just on principle.

                      • @nickxau: Nice. Was that price of $953 before the promo code was applied? And were those merchants applicable for the promo?
I have a feeling I checked Futu Online but can't recall if they were included in the promo code.
Whatever the case, good router for a great price.

                        • @itsTricky83: That was before promo code price. Definitely were an applicable seller as I've been monitoring the prices now for 6mths that's how I know they're dodgy as and also participate in all the promos.
Definitely a great router (and more!) though I still haven't unwrapped it yet and can't wait for the weekend to set it all up

                          • @nickxau: Expected mine to arrive today but it hasn't! :-(
I also got the 24port PoE PRO gen 2 switch and two direct connect cables.
That should future proof my place for a while.
Main reason for the switch was the limiting 1gb backplane on the UDM SE built in switch.

                      • @nickxau:

Shopping Express and Futu Online (same seller) had it for $953 but I refused to buy from those jackers as EVERY SINGLE TIME there was a promo they'd be the first to jack their prices and not just a bit. By A LOT!

They're back around the $1100 mark - and they're a part of the 15% off ebay promo going on so that's likely why! I remember reading Afterpay cops the discount on these deals, but the seller cops it on the ebay promos.

I won't even get to open my SE until I get keys to the new place, which prob wont be for another two months

                        • @aragornelessar: Attempted delivery today and the shitty Arlo Doorbell decided to shit itself. So the delivery driver has decided to take it to a post office far far far away, over the other side of the river; instead of the post office 500m away from me. FFS

                        • +2

@aragornelessar: … and THAT is exactly what I'm talking about! Hence the reason why I refused to give them my business when they just drop their price to $1 less than their competitor.

Congrats on your new place and I'm sure you'll have fun decking it out with Ubiquiti gear!

@Tricky83 Damn that sucks! I suggest you call ahead to make sure it's indeed at the farther PO. Similar thing happened to me last time and I wasted my lunch break lining up at the further PO only to be told my parcel was actually dropped off at the PO closer to my home!? Needless to say I was fuming that day!!

                          • @nickxau: That had crossed my mind. Will call StarTrack tomorrow during my break to be sure.

  • I ordered on the morning of the 16th and haven't received notice of the item being dispatched.

I also ordered 2 x Ubiquiti direct attach 0.5 cables from Wireless One later on and they HAVE both been dispatched.

I also ordered a Ubiquiti Pro POE 24 port switch via the website on the 15th and that hasn't been dispatched yet wither.
