  • Seems like the cheapest as of now. Think ill wait till they go down to $200 again

    • +2

Me too. $270 just seems like such a rip off when they were $200 less than a year ago.

      • +1

If they were less than $230 I would get 2 as I need it for my lab setup.

        • Yeah that's about my limit too. I want one for a DC++ server.

    • That will be around the same time that 2TB hard drives are <$90 too.

    • I've been waiting for that to happen for months now. Now I'm thinking of biting the bullet and buying this one.

  • Tempting, wish I could pick up, I'm about 5 minutes walk from their location.

  • What sort of display ports does this have?

    • 15 Pin VGA only.(128MB shared supporting 1920x1200 @ 60Hz)

If you want any other video out connection such as HDMI or DVI you can easily add a low profile Half height/length video card to the PCI x16 expansion slot.

      • Awesome! thanks.

      • Just buying one now, any particular video cards I should get?

        • HTPC: Nvidia GeForce GT610
          http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=9260

          Windows: AMD Radeon 5450
          http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=6178

          Windows: AMD Radeon 6450
          http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=7748

Using a GT520 in my Microserver, but these are END OF LINE and replaced with the GT600 series of cards.

        • +1

My ASUS 6450 came with a low profile bracket. Some don't - check the box/specs.

        • +1

Same with my Asus 5450, definitely check the box first if possible because some will have it but not list it on the specs, and some sneaky specs will say something like 'low-profile support' which means the card is low-profile but you may have to buy the bracket separately.

Bear in mind that if you go with an AMD/ATI card then you may have difficulties with Linux compatibility.

        • HTPC: Nvidia GeForce GT610

The MSY website says it needs a 300W CPU. Any lower-power linux-friendly options?
          I run mine 24/7, and with a silent 80W power-brick plus pico-PSU.

edit: google tells me it is 29W TDP rated. So why specify a 300W PSU??

I love these servers. I have one that I put 16GB memory and got MS hyper-v on it.

    • i have one as well but i only have 8gb :( works perfectly as a vent/ torrent/ NAS and I am sure I could do many more things with it ( when i find the time )

    • Does the full 16 gb register? I thought the hard max was 8.

      • +1

        Supports the full 16Gb

      • +1

Apparently some sticks work and some don't. I have 16gb (G.Skill Ripjaws-X 16G Kit(8Gx2) DDR3 1333 F3-10666CL9D-16GBXL) from MSY in my N36L and it's fantastic. I did have to trim the top heat-spreaders off though.

There's plenty of info on 16gb in the microservers online but I closed all my tabs once I bought my sticks.

      • I can't understand why you would ever need 16GB RAM in these things - wouldn't you always be limited by the CPU processing rather than RAM? I use mine as a FileServer and HTPC and never come close to utilising the 8GB RAM but the CPU gets flogged constantly…

          Virtualisation.

        • Within Virtualisation, you can have SQL, Sharepoint, etc … all of these can use lots of memory.

  • Would love one of these things to replace my current (ailing) media server. She had her day, at the core she's still build around the same Athlon XP 2600+ that was running my desktop 10 years ago.

Unfortunately this years tax return has already been consumed :(

    • If you already have a case and perhaps even a power supply then its cheaper to just upgrade that…

Amd Fusion for high end and the E-350 Fusion for low end will do a better job then this microserver.

These microservers are really only good if you want the case and the fact that its already put together.

Quick google online seems to show the CPU is very slow.

  • I got one of the NL36 lst year, the only down side is that it cannot run OSX on VMWARE :*(

    • what was the reason? I was going to test running OSX server on VMware on this box.

      • Probably too much work trying to get it to work on a AMD CPU wouldn't it - even through virtualisation.

    I recently put mine together:

    8GB Ram
Asus 6450 LP via HDMI to TV.

    Running Win 7 with WMC
Install Media Browswer, SABNZD, Couch Potato, Sickbeard and Headphones.
    Install shark codecs.

Ultimate HTPC! Wife acceptance factor very high (simply add a movie from IMDB using Couch Potato script).

  • This is probably a very newbie question, but these run on linux right? Would I be able to buy one of these to run logitech cameras?

    http://www.logitech.com/en-au/webcam-communications/video-se…

    Seems good to run 24x7

    • They'll run most OS's, including Linux & variants. I'm running Win7 on mine ATM coz it's pretty much only being used as a HTPC…I was running WHS2011 for a while but it was too much farting around for my purposes, which turned out not to include a pressing need for a dedicated media server! :)

  • I have been running one of the older N36L as my HTPC and its been fantastic.

Letest generic Openelec Frodo with Audio Engine build
    Nvidia Geforce GT520
Low profile sound card (since my old AV receiver does not have HDMI)
    2gb Ram
HP MCE IR receiver and remote programmed with MCE codes.
250gb sata hdd in optical drive bay with patch bios. As OS drive.

I find Openelec works extremely well on these as a HTPC much better than the full official XBMC and is very easy to setup and update.

  • Ordered:
    N40L MicroServer $265.00
    2 x 4GB Kingston RAM $48
Western Digital 2TB Hard Drive $112.00
    Asus GT610 Low Profile: $54.55
    All from Shopping Express $479.55

Could of maybe got some of the extras cheaper but just one shipping cost and one order. Looking forward to a great HTPC!

  • Can anyone recommend an ATI Radeon HD 6450 card from this supplier that definitely has a low profile bracket included and also is confirmed to fit?
    Regards
