Edifier W820NB ANC Bluetooth Headphones $61.70 Delivered (RRP $119) @ Ventchoice_au eBay

APAYDAY3

From the makers of OzBargain's favourite bookshelf speakers, these are probably the best bang-for-buck ANC bluetooth headphones for 60 bucks, or anything sub $100-120 quite frankly.

With a design reminiscent of Sony's WH-1000XM4 at 1/6 of the price, these cans offer excellent active noise cancellation and surprisingly good sound quality. In fact it probably rivals the Soundcore Q30/35- at half the price of those!

Overwhelmingly positive reviews from audiophile blogs, see here and also here. Also comes in a range of colours: Black, White, Grey and Light Blue.

  • Pros: excellent ANC for the price, long battery life, well-balanced sound, comfortable
  • Cons: all plastic so non-premium build quality, lack of aptX support, lack of hi-res wireless audio

Personally I'm waiting for a deal on the upgraded Plus version of these cans, which include LDAC codec support, hi-res wireless, a bit stronger ANC (-43dB vs -38dB) and Bluetooth 5.2. Still going for around $95 on AliExpress. However at $61 for the regular version you can't go wrong.

  • Interesting.
As an audio enthusiast, I've never heard of those blogs.
Somewhat keen to have a go, but don't need an addition to my collection.

Ok I am seeing a flaw that is also a flaw on the Anker Q30's. Although for a different reason.
According to the user manual, the W820NB's do not have a 3.5mm port for a wired connection. Meaning they will not be able to be used with ANC while wired (e.g. for airplane entertainment). This is a deal breaker for some people.

    • Thanks for the heads up. Thats a must have

      • Yeah just to expand on the same issue with the Q30's.
In the Q30's case it has a 3.5mm port on the headphones but it was a firmware update a few years ago that removed the ability to use ANC when wired.

According to another user who chatted with Anker support, their official stance on this was "the bluetooth chip stability was compromised so they had to remove the feature".
They also inquired further about the possibility of the Q35 model going through a similar "removal of ANC when wired feature" and Anker told them they would not remove the feature on the Q35's.
The Q35 to this date does not have this issue, and the ANC will work with 3.5mm wired connection.

    • You can connect wired via the Type-C port. It also has ANC (and high-res audio) via wired connection. Not sure if there's a Type-C to airplane adapter out there though.

      From the manual:

To enjoy Hi-Res Audio, please connect this headset to audio output devices with a Type-C data cable.

I can't find an exact part of the manual which says ANC is for both wireless and wired but on reddit there are comments saying the Edifier supports wired ANC (along with low-latency gaming mode).

      • You can connect wired via the Type-C port.

Yeah I noticed that. But Type-C is a digital connection. 3.5mm connection required for airplane adapter use is analog.

Not sure if there's a Type-C to airplane adapter out there though.

One possible workaround I thought of is to use an Type-C to 3.5mm dongle, which has a tiny digital to analog converter inside. Like the Apple one which was at first $7 but had it's priced jacked to $15. But that is an output device and requires the host device to provide power for the D/A converter, such as a phone can do.
Not sure if the W820NB will provide power out of it's USB-C port, the way I see it it's the other way around and power is provided by the device you connect the headphones too (which would be a phone or computer). The same connection/port is also used to charge the device.
So I have my doubts about that method working.

  • Which of the Edifier models have cables for plane adapters?

  • Anyone put this up against the Razer Opus that came in that bright green?

  • Getting the error "Looks like that's the wrong code. Please double-check and try again."
