This seems like an incredible value based off the gamers nexus review, one of the top performing coolers at the moment for half the price of noctuas high end coolers

  • +1

Extra $1 for RGB -> Extra performance.

That's what we call a deal.

  • Ugh, I have absolutely no need to change coolers, but the rgb one matches my GPU.

    Must resist…

      Follow your heart

  • What does SE signify in the sold out models?

    • The SE is supposed to be a slightly cheaper variant as far as I know.

    • +2

"The only differences are the color (grey vs black), fans and the 120 has covers on the towers making it 2mm taller than the SE. The pa120 uses TL-C12 fans while the SE uses TL-C12C fans. The fan specs are the same but Thermalright doesn't list the C version on their website for some reason. Other than that, they are identical."

      • Just a note they also have different mounting components. The SE versions, like all Thermalright SE coolers including the Phantom Spirit, do not support socket 20xx. The non SE PA ones do support 20xx. I haven't been able to confirm if they use the exact same mounting systems (including Z height) otherwise just with different brackets which lack the 80mm spacing, and lack of screws for the 20xx (which have a built in backplate that can't be screwed through or from the otherwise). It's also unclear to me if the SE is intended to be a cheaper variant as several people have suggested or a replacement. The fact the Phantom Spirit is SE only makes me think it might be a replacement but not sure especially since the SE has been around for a while and the non-SE still seems to be sold. Given that the Gamers Nexus was specifically for a non-SE I sort of think whatever their plans, they will keep the non SE for a while, but who knows. (No guarantee Suomole will stock it anyway, if this is something which matters to you like it does to me. I.E. It's possible we just missed the boat. But can only hope for the best.)

Thanks, now I just need a computer to pair it with.

After seeing almost every review saying these are great at $50 US, I picked one up to go with an AM5 build I'm about to put together. Cant wait to bolt a kilo of metal onto that shiny new CPU to keep it frosty!

  • Bugger I just bought a "be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4"

    • But it is a different beast…

  • Anyone using this cooler explain to me the ram clearance? The fan that sits over the ram has to be set much higher with every kit of ram that I have. The fan sits directly over the ram with not much clearance. How is everybody getting around this? Most build pics I see are running this config too.

    • +1

You let it sit slightly higher or swap the front fan and place it on the rear of the heatsink above the motherboard vrm

      • Yes I have just let it sit higher. In all the photos I have seen it doesn't look like the have done that, hence my confusion. Thanks very much for your help 😁

    • The rear fan sits the same as the middle one on my set up, just a few mm above my Crucial Ballistix DDR4, no RGB model.
So flush with top of the heatsink

      • What chipset do you run?

        • MSI x570 Tomahawk motherboard, with Ryzen 5950X CPU

          • @CoolColJ: Hmm I am wondering if it's the LGA 1700 socket. I have 12700 in a z790 board and there's no way the fan can do that low. I didn't even bother to check but the fans are the same size though, aren't they?

            • @drinkin-beer: Yes they would be the same size.

            • @drinkin-beer: do you have low profile ram?

              • @CoolColJ: I do have a set but it's only 16gb. I am using Kingston fury beast RGB. They are not low profile but not that big. I have seen many people running RGB ram with this cooler and the fan looks flush with the heatsink tower, hence my asking.

                • +1

@drinkin-beer: Well most likely your ram is too tall.
My Crucial Ballistix are low profile, just basic head spreader. 37mm or so

  • Outrageous deal!

  • Just got my grey one

I replaced my Noctua D14 with this, and the temps while rendering on all cores with my Ryzen 5950x stayed the same with CPU fan speed at 36%, 680 RPM.
69 degrees with a 26 degree room ambient temperature, so 44 degree difference.

Almost inaudible from 1m away in my Silverstone Fortress FT02 case, so quieter than the old D14 which was spinning faster for the same temps.

I did not use thermal paste as well, I instead used a Innovation Cooling Graphite Thermal Pad.
Which I had to spray some isopropnal alcohol on it to keep it in place while mounting.
So it was very easy to swap them over, no thermal paste to clean off or apply, took only 15 mins.
Installation was a breeze, same as the Noctua system.

Plus the ram clearance was much better, as the bottom of the heatsink is 2 cm taller, and also smaller overall on all sides. Now I can access all my ram slots, and undo the GPU catch without having to remove the heat sink.

So no need to spend big bucks on a Noctua if your on a budget, while still getting good performance.
Fans may not last as long as the Noctua, but the difference in price means you can replace the whole thing 3 times over :)

  • Well, I got my PA 120 but it has an annoying whirring sound no matter which direction I turn the fans in. Is this normal?

    • Mine doesn't whine. Maybe make sure everything is secured tightly and nothing is loose.

    • What speed are you running it at?

      No whirring sound here
I used the same setup as the official installation video

      • I'm sorry I can't tell. I have HWMonitor, where should I be looking?

I will try to fasten properly. I swear I made it tight enough.

The sound gets worse when it goes faster but thankfully that only happens when I'm gaming.

        • Get Fanctrl or Fancontrol from github, free open source software to control your fan curves with respect to CPU temps
They will show your your fan RPM as well.

If you keep the fans under 1000rpm they will be quiet, and still cool well, as even for me using all my 16 cores at full load on a 5950x rendering
Gaming is nowhere near as heavy

          • @CoolColJ: Many thanks for the help. I don't know how to run stuff from Github but I got it from here. The noise is more tolerable but it's still present. I must be oversensitive.

            https://getfancontrol.com/

            • @Bunnyburger: Maybe it's interacting with your system , vibrations, resonance.
I can't hear mine unless I stick my ear right against my case

              • @CoolColJ: I tried holding the heatsink and fans firmly. Still has that noise. But reducing it to 40% and 760rpm does help a lot.

  • You can also buy the fans from the same seller for $9 each or 3pack for $24 or so

  • Interesting enough I assumed the seller just couldn't supply enough fast enough especially with the recent Gamers Nexus review. But when I asked the suomole they stated the problem is their Amazon capacity limit
