Teclast P40HD (10.1" FHD, Android 12, 6GB/128GB, Widevine L1, 4G) US$92.75 (~A$139.74) Shipped @ Teclast Official AliExpress

1230
H9WG3LAN9

On sale is this new release tablet from Android with really good specs for a budget tablet under A$140. This is a good option for general use, media playback, light gaming, emulation, for the kids and so forth.

Featuring Android 12 with Google Play, 10.1" 1920x1200 16:10 IPS display, 6GB RAM, 128GB UFS storage (microSD support up to 1TB), UNISOC T606 Octa-core CPU, 6000mAh battery with USB-C, 4G LTE with Dual SIM, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, WiFi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, metal body and dual speakers.

Despite having Widevine L1 DRM, this tablet has not been whitelisted by Netflix so playback will be in SD instead of HD. Widevine L1 will still work for Disney+, Prime and YouTube. The other downside is that there's no 4G B28 support.

  • How's the display on this one compare to the alldocube iplay 50?

    • +1

      iPlay50 is 10.4" and 2K.

      • +1

thanks, the iplay 50 is probably better deal with Unisoc T618 and 2k screen (but 64GB rom) at US$107.41 shipped (code AN9 works)

        • Have you got a link for this? please

          • @jdawgydawggy: Can't link it but search for iplay 50 and it's the one from the ALLDOCUBE Factory Store

  • No AU plug?

    • +4

Sadly not. It's just your standard 5V/2A or 3A charger anyway so I'm sure everyone has spares from old phones.

  • Is there any tablet for a similar price with Netflix HD support?

    • +3

No. Netflix won't whitelist anything but expensive Samsung tabs etc.

      • +1

Could try Kodi with Netflix addon?

      • This seems incredibly consumer unfriendly.
What purpose does this DRM serve?

It's not like there's any shortage of Netflix content available on torrent sites, clearly this doesn't work.

All it does is worsen the experience for paying customers

        • +1

Widevine DRM is used to encrypt the streams to prevent piracy from happening. Google simply require Widevine L1 for you to be able to stream HD content and that's enough for services like Prime and Disney+. Netflix being Netflix decided that's not good enough and have added a whitelist so only devices they've approved can access the encrypted streams.

      • Yes, there is.

  • +1

    Techfast?

    • +4

      Pretty sure it's Teclast.

    • Throwback to the early versions of android and fake iphones

      • +3

I miss those days. Android tablets with built in projectors and the Goophone that's still being made today!

      • Stupid me, I was confusing it with Fast Card Tech. thanks for the deal Clear!

  • Would this be better than the lenovo Tab m10 3rd Gen that Aldi sold for $149

    • +11

Pretty similar but I'd go for this tbh. The Lenovo has a UNISOC T610 which is clocked higher than the T606, as well as a better camera, speakers and Android 11. This Teclast however has Android 12, more RAM, more storage and a larger battery.

      • +2

The biggest advantage of the teclast imo is the sim card slot. Hard to get a cheap tablet from lenovo/anyone that retails in Australia with 4g/5g options.

        • +1

The Lenovo has a sim card slot; I got two from ALDI, $149 each. Doubt it's 5G, tho. No matter, I only use it at home, on wifi, and don't wanna be anywhere near 5G anyway.

          • +1

@wisdomtooth: Oh cool I didn't realise, last time I looked all the Lenovo options with Sims were far more expensive.

          • @wisdomtooth: Can you please confirm if your Lenovo M10 has sim card capability? Have you tried inserting SIM?

            • @c0nfus3d: The Lenovo Tab M10 (3rd Gen) from Aldi does not have a SIM card slot. The slot that they're probably thinking is for the microSD card. The tray sort of has a spot for a SIM card too, but it's filled in and can't be used.

              • @jakentta: Thanks for confirming, i found it strange that it had sim slot but nothing mentioning tablet supporting sim on box or on website

The Tab M10 comes with Android 12 and will get Android 13 this year. I don't know how Teclast are with their updates and upgrades.

I'm finding conflicting reports about HD Netflix on the Lenovo though.

That's a sweet deal though. When was that on sale?

      • My Lenovo Tab M10 (3rd Gen) that I recently got from Aldi only has Android 11 and it tells me there's no updates available. Your link takes to the Plus version of the tablet. Although having said that, gsmarena does list the non-plus version as upgradeable to Android 12 also. Not sure why mine doesn't seem to want to let me do that.

        • My Lenovo Tab M10 (3rd Gen) that I recently got from Aldi only has Android 11 and it tells me there's no updates available.

          Same here.

        • Apologies. GSM Arena has had inaccurate information before. But I have read an article somewhere claiming it would get Android 13.

Would you recommend the M10 Gen 3?

      • I'm finding conflicting reports about HD Netflix on the Lenovo though.

        Works flawlessly on mine.

  • Wow, great price with wideline for everything else, but Netflix. Looks like a great buy for this price range.

    Thanks

    • +8

😘 I've been eagerly waiting for the 2023 Android tablet releases. I'm still hoping for a good 8" tablet to come out.

      • +1

This. It's frustrating how bad the smaller Android tablet market is these days, made worse by the limited offerings available here. Lenovo M8 looks to now be up to Gen 4 in some countries, but we're still stuck with Gen 2. I don't need it for much (Spotify and smart home control), but tablets should do better than 2GB ram these days.

    for the kids

    Hmmm…

  • +2

Hi Clear, always appreciate all your deals.

I was looking at the Lenovo tablets but noticed you haven't posted any Lenovo Tablet deals is recent days… Is there any reason for this? I wonder if this is due to the dodgy (unlocked bootloader) OS?

Would you be recommending and/or posting any Lenovo Tablet deals soon?

    • +5

The Lenovo P11 series, Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2020/21 and Pad Plus are all discontinued with sellers no longer getting new stock. The latest XiaoXin tablets don't have any official Android global ROMs so they either have dodgy ROMs ported over from other Lenovo tablets, like the M10 3rd Gen which are unstable or have Lenovo's ZUI fork with no Google Play, Widevine, unlocked bootloaders etc.

It's just not worth the risk anymore trying to find a seller with legitimate ROMs.

  • With tablets like these, do you need to flash this or can it work out of the box?

    • +2

      Works out of the box.

      • Awesome thanks!

  • Thanks @Clear,
Which one of these budget tablets has better support for custom ROMs?

    • +4

None of them. For custom ROM support you'd be looking at Xiaomi.

      • Thanks. I guess I'll need to spend a bit more. Any suggestions on Xiaomi tablets? I don't care about Netflix or gaming. I just want something for general web browsing and remote access to servers (e.g. ssh, rdp, …) when the servers have issues and I'm not around my laptop.

      • Which are the Xiaomi tablets that support custom ROMs ?

I'm also holding out on going for tablets,
        unless they've got ROM support,
and the Samsungs do (but I don't want to trip the Knox counter,
so I don't bother with the Samsung tablets)

    • +2

Not many unfortunately, I have the Lenovo P11 and while it's a great tablet, nice screen, decent enough performance for what you need, it's stuck on android 11, with no further manufacture support.

It's already 2 android version out of date, about to be 3 in a few months, and still basically zero custom rom support that I can see on XDA.

      • +4

I am in same situation. But just came across Pixel Experience Android 13 here

Haven't had a chance to try it. If you do let me know how it is.

        • Sorry mate, that won't work with our tablets, well not if you have a P11 like me. It's only for the P11 plus or the P11 5G ( I know, you'd think the P11 and P11 5G would be interchangeable but they have a completely different processor, so no go unfortunately).

          • +1

@Binchicken22: You are right. I have both the P11 and the P11 Pro - Clear has been costing me monies! I will have to try it on the Pro when I have them time.

      • +1

It's a shame how much usable electronic devices I'm throwing out just because I need the updated software.

        • +2
        • +1

          Don't throw out usable devices.

Donate them to kids to encourage them to tinker with them,
or give them away for free on Gumtree, FB Marketplace
or eBay (there are people who actually will buy them !)

  • +1

Thanks. Will buy for the kid.. any recommendation for covers? Kid is into tantrum phase and can throw the tablet anytime

    • Yes, will also order if I can find a case on Ebay or such.

      • +1

There's a bundle on the page with a basic case.

        • Thanks, saw that.
Don't like the look of that, wonder if there are others.

    • I don’t know if any cover would help much if you throw it in the air.

  • +2

I had no idea Netflix whitelist android devices/tablets
Is side loading or installing the APK not work?

    • +5

Sideloading the apk won't change anything. Basically the Netflix app will see if the device has Widevine L1 DRM and if it does then it'll check the device against it's own server to see if it's whitelisted. If so you get HD content and if not you get SD.

A shitty move by Netflix for no logical reason.

      • Must be a way to spoof device ID to circumvent the check, no?

  • +1

This tablet will stuck with Android 12 forever right? no future updates etc.

    • I agree. If it's not Samsung (on of the new Galaxy S ones, at least), there's a high chance you're not going to get upgrades. Really annoying. I have a need for a good Android tablet that has good updates.

Either that or Win 11 with official Google Play support. It will be a cold day in hell before that happens.

  • +2

I bought a Samsung galaxy tab a8 and the screen is terrible. If you're looking at tablets don't buy the tab a8.

  • Can this be used as dashboard for home ?

    • Expensive dashboard, I reckon.

      • Do you recommend anything else, I will be using a raspberry pi. All displays are around this range so thought this was a good idea

  • Showing as USD $99.86.. what am I doing wrong?

    • Is that after both codes?

      • Yes

        • +1

Sounds like you have the bundle with the case selected.

  • +1

Can anyone recommend an 8" tablet?

  • I wonder if this would be any good for a wall mounted home assistant dashboard.

    • Yep more than capable.

  • +2

I bought one of their tablets years ago. It was utter rubbish. Specs are ok, but the screen was a plastic fingerprint magnet.
Palmed it of to someone on gumtree after a week.

  • +1

    Hmm, brightness not specified.

  • Can this do calls and texts?

    • it got sim card slots and supports 3/4g so yeah

      • it dose have sim yes, although some times they are only for data.

        • Call thru wifi, and text thru pairing with the phone (thru the wifi again — just wish I could do the same with Signal 😒).

        • the iplay ones I've had support both calls and text too

          • @FeZZa21: Sweet. Don't know why I need it but worry about that later.

  • My P90HD is still working. That's bought about 10yrs ago.

  • Would this be any good for video calls (eg messenger)? Not sure how good a 2mpx camera on a tablet would be for this.

    • +1

      Wouldn't be ideal at 2mp
