  • I'm looking for a combined DAC/AMP for my bookshelf speakers, preferably USB for use on my PC. (Voll B44 V2s). Any good units included in this deal? I've got an old nuforce uDAC and lepy amp at the moment.

    • Get the Gustard x16, it's a magical DAC

    • I'm in the exact same situation. Same speakers. Looking for a combined DAC/AMP unit but hoping not spend more than around 2-300$

Would anyone be able to advise if these are adequate? Or any recommendations? Many thanks!

I have Topping DX3 Pro+ units in both my main and secondary hi-fi systems. Both systems were pretty resolving and transparent across the full audio range to begin with, but introducing the Topping DACs took them to a new level of detail, dynamics and clarity. This DAC has been the most high-value and outstandingly cost-effective investment I have made to my audio systems to date.

In each case, I use a bit-perfect digital stream from Tidal, Qobuz and my own CD-ripped files to one of the two coaxial inputs of the DX3 (up to 192kHz sampling rate). I also use the optical input on one DX3 from the optical output of my TV (limited to 48kHz sampling rate from the TV). The DX3s also accept USB (PCM up to 32bit/768kHz and DSD up to DSD512) and Bluetooth (most codecs) as inputs. Engineering specifications and technical measurements are all at near state-of-the-art levels. Due to their location in my hifi systems I haven't used the headphone amplifier portions of the DX3s much, but measurements and reviews indicate high performance in that functionality as well. The remote control is of course very useful for input selection and volume control.

Full measurements and independent review of the Topping DX3 Pro+ can be found (amongst numerous other expert, technically-detailed, thorough and unbiased reviews of other components) at the Audio Science Review site - see also the ASR video channel. A Google search will provide numerous other positive reviews of the Topping DX3 Pro+ from other reviewers. (I also recommend the Archimago blogspot website for other detailed technical reviews and discussions of aspects of digital audio.)

        • Amazing, thanks for your reply. I'm sold!

        • Does the DX3 Pro+ allow me to use optical and USB at the same time? I'm wanting to be able to talk on discord from my pc while playing console games on my monitor which has optical out

          • @KipperBoi: I wouldn't think it's possible as you have to select a particular input at a time and USB and Optical are separate selections. The entire circuitry would only process a single digital input at a time. Of course, you can have both (or all) physical inputs connected at the same time but only switch to the one you need to use.

The DX3 Pro+ does allow you to select Line Out only, Headphone Out only, or Line Out Plus Headphone Out modes.

(All selections can be carried out from the remote.)

            • @RodvD: Ah Damn, that makes sense. I wonder if there is one that can do two inputs at once. Thanks for the explanation!

    • Not in this store but Aiyima T9 sounds like what you’re after.

Or there’s a Douk Audio that’s basically identical.

There’s a T9 Pro too but it has different internals so can’t vouch for it.

    What compares to this? :D

I accidentally bought these and was mind blown.

  • interesting, not sure if related, but Linsoul seems to be having a sale on some items too. e.g. QKZ x HBB for $22.49

edit: clicked around a bit, seems only very few models are discounted.

    • Even Amazon has vastly better service than Linsoul.

      • it's the linsoul store on amazon

  • Ordered the Truthear Hexa. Thanks OP!

  • Anyone know if Blessing 2 is still king of the competition at this price range? Read it was the best around 3 years ago so not sure if anything new has popped up and dethroned it.

    • +1

yeah any of the cheaper sets. 20-50 dollars will get you better nowadays. won't ramble about the audio science but moondrop quarks DSP and KZ linglong are pretty damn good regardless of pricing.

moondrop variations if you want the best, period

    • not now, there's been mad teasers about an upcoming successor "project red". if you were going to spend over $300, i'd suggest to wait and see.

    • oh also Blessing 3 is releasing next week.

  • Can you use the topping for TV sound?

    • +1

Ability to use TV audio output with the Topping DACs:

Yes - for the DX3 Pro+ since it has optical (and coaxial) input; e.g. if your TV has optical out.

No - for the D10S since it only has USB input (and TV USB ports are not outputs).

      • Thank you. Does it make a difference on tv sound?

        • Yes, most of the time, improvement depending on TV source program audio quality and definitely compared with built-in TV speakers. This is assuming you will be feeding the DX3 audio output to a decent 2-channel hi-fi audio setup, with main speakers either side of the TV (to centre the sound) and a subwoofer (as TV bass will provide significant impact).

The DX3 is only 2-channel (L, R) so if you already have a home theatre setup with surround sound and subwoofer, probably best to stay with that for TV as incorporating the DX3 just for front channels may be difficult and not achieve much.

          • @RodvD: Ah alright. I don't have a speaker set-up so might leave it then. I have amps for my pc set-up and I know they make a difference when you pair them with the right headphones.

Thank you for your clear explanation 👍🏾

            • +1

@Raj09: No problem. Just for completeness -

If you are feeding your amp or headphones from the analog outputs of your TV (i.e. RCA line out or 3.5mm headphone output), then using an optical digital output from your TV (if it has one) instead into the DX3 and from there to your headphones or amp should make a worthwhile difference.

However, you can only connect the headphones or amp to the DX3 via physical wired connection, as the DX3 does not have Bluetooth output. (It has Bluetooth as a digital input.)

  • I have HIFIMAN headphones with 4.4mm balanced cable.
Any Topping DAC/AMP devices support it?
Does it make sense to get Topping EX5 and 4pin-XLR->4.4mm female adapter?

    • Which model hifiman?

I have a pair of HE-6 v2 and they are power hungry…I feed them with Schiit Bifrost DAC and a Schiit Jotunheim 2 all balanced…and I feel like I want more power. Synergy is great though (which is important for headphone, DAC, amp combo)

This setup drives my Sennheiser Hd650 with no issues as well…

      • Sorry, didn't mention the model.
        HIFIMAN Edition XS.
