  • The Coral USB Accelerator is a USB accessory that brings machine learning inferencing to existing systems. It works with the Raspberry Pi and Linux, Mac, and Windows systems.

    • does it improve the efficiency of the devices or speeds up etc?

      • -1
        Sorry, I can't explain something I don't understand.

It includes a USB-c socket to connect to a host computer to perform accelerated ML inferencing. The on-board Edge TPU is a small ASIC designed by Google that accelerates TensorFlow Lite models in a power efficient manner: it's capable of performing 4 trillion operations per second (4 TOPS), using 2 watts of power—that's 2 TOPS per watt.

Given the right task it can achieve extreme efficiency gains over existing CPU capability. I plan to use mine for real time multiple fps image detection in Frigate NVR.

        • Looks like they have the non USB corals in stock as well. Just need to figure out which one will plug into my Dell Optiplex 7050 Micro HA server running frigate.

@frugalferret: Potentially the m.2 2230 would work unless you want the wifi adapter in that slot.

The 2280 will fit if you don't want to run an nvme ssd in that slot.

            • @XeKToReX: Hey mate, do you know if this https://au.rs-online.com/web/p/products/2017824/ is the correct one if I want to use Frigate. I have a lenovo m93p and don't need the wifi. https://photos.app.goo.gl/8UkfXCcUdp8MkPnk8

              • @No: Went to check out and they don't expect stock until June.

                • @frugalferret: https://au.rs-online.com/web/p/communication-wireless-develo…
This is what I have in my thin client HA/Frigate machine. It's M.2 E-key, goes in the wifi slot, not the storage M.2. The one listed by No is mini-pcie, you have to check the specs of your machine to know which slot (Dell claims it's M.2 here https://www.dell.com/ae/business/p/optiplex-7050-micro/pd)
I also have the USB coral but it had issues with passthru to my virtualised HA, kept putting the device to sleep or something.

                  • @Borkbork: Thanks. That confirms the m.2 E is the one I was thinking. Will wait a few more months to see if more stock is available. $40 delivery for a 30mm item is a little steep.

                    • @frugalferret: Fair enough, free shipping was lower when i bought mine, still bought 2 as the second one was almost the same as paying the shipping

              • +1

@No: Hi Mate, It looks like that would be the best one for you in the m93p, the only issue with Lenovo's is that they have a "whitelist" of mini PCIe cards you can use as far as I know! Maybe check out if someone has a custom BIOS for them that let's you run any card.

                Good luck!

                • @XeKToReX: Oh jeez that's pretty crappy of Lenovo! Thanks for letting me know I'll look into it

  • +1

Oh cool! I was searching for one of these just recently and only seeing the insanely overpriced stuff on Amazon. Thanks OP

Hmm, what’s good to get from this shop to get up to free shipping?

  • +1

honestly i would buy one but my 1050ti lp isn't dead yet 😂😂

  • Not sure having stock is really a deal. These are supposed to only be $60USD.

    • +1

Since when is USD pricing ever relevant to what things sell for here?

    • Generally I would agree, but in perspective this will be around half the price of any alternative ready to ship.

Another consideration is that many sellers tied to the USD pricing restrict shipping to Aus.

  • I ordered one in the first week of January. RS online is showing delivery date as today + 90 days everytime I check delivery date.

Got one to experiment with frigate and deepstack like others here

  • +2

It might not actually be in stock for new orders. I ordered one from RS in October 2022 and it still hasn't shipped, it's still marked "Order in progress" with an estimated dispatch date of 7/6/2023. The original dispatch date was 30/12/2022, then it got changed to 4/1/2023, then it changed to some time in April 2023, and now it's 7th of June 2023.

I imagine they're using their new stock to fulfil previous orders from last year.

I ordered one from Mouser in July 2022 and it only got delivered this week.

    • Not sure, stock counter was 1k+ this morning, 380 at time of posting and 269 now.

My earlier preorder from RS got charged so I assume shipping soon. (Thats why I checked the site)

      • +1

My Oct 2022 preorder got charged 2-3 days ago as well, which is what made me login to check the estimated shipping date. That's when I saw it was some time in April, then when I checked again this morning it changed to June.

        • This is what happened to me. I've now got a couriers please tracking number that has no information.

          • @boretentsu: Good news, I just received my October 2022 order today!

      • Good news, I just got a shipping notification for my October 2022 order!
Maybe their stock indicator is actually accurate now.

  • This is a pretty steep premium on the already expensive USB model. But at least it looks to be in stock….

I back orderer the PCIe version from RS and cancelled after nine months.

I recently got it from SEEED studio and it came within a week - in my experience much more reliable for getting coral.

I’ve also heard that the USB version may overheat as compared to PCIe

    • I have both the dual TPU m2. Coral and the USB coral. Neither overheated during the Adelaide summer. I do however have added custom passive cooling to the m2. coral.

      • When you use the dual one, should two APEX devices show up or just one?
I have installed it in HA OS and can see one APEX under devices.
Various internet sources suggested mucking around with kernel gasket etc and want to know what to expect first

  • $40+ Delivery is a bit steep.

  • +1

Last year I ordered one to RS and took them 7-8 months to deliver. Meanwhile did a GPU-passthrough to a proxmox lxc and used deepstack for object detection on a few cameras. Works great and coral is sitting in my drawer now.

  • @manunited Why not sell it? It fetches a premium. By the time you need one, stocks will probably be normalised.

  • Has anyone else seen progress with the order? Mine has a courier reference but no change to estimated despatch which is set at 24/3.

    • I received my earlier preorder today. Tracking seems pretty terrible, only ever saw it as dispatched.

      • Did it change from estimated despatch to despatch?

      • FWIW my October 2022 order arrived on Wednesday but the RS website still shows it as "Order received 3/10" with an estimated despatch date of 24/3/2023.

        • Just got mine on Friday. Ordered at the start of January.

  • Hmm helpful to know, not helpful of RS

    • You'd think such a large, long-established company servicing professional industries would have their act together. :)
