Never needed one but got one, thanks OP!

  • Reviews aren’t great.

    I had an Ender 3 V2.

Good printers, if you are willing to put in the time to upgrade them and fix the inherent design and manufacturing flaws (unreliable extruders, tinned electrical wires, noisy fans, etc). Not sure if the S1 is similar or whether it's just long-term reliable out of the box.

The above makes it sound worse than it was… they're definitely a reasonable option for dipping your toes into printing.

The S1's sprite extruder is pretty great — a solid upgrade over the old V2's bowden tube system. And the magnetic PEI sheet and the CRT/BL Touch is also other ready-done upgrades that most people had to do on the V2 but come standard here. But yeah, I think noisy fans are still an issue - a $20 fix, plus I personally think tunung and upgrading these basic printers yourself as needed is part of the fun and helps beginners to learn more about how they work.

S1 has a lot of upgrades that people were doing to the v2 so it good for beginners who want something that performs well out of the box

      • yup! the only thing the S1 has that my Ender 3 v2 doesn't have is the sprite extruder. I've upgraded everything else - plus a few additional things.

I'd personally go the cheapest option and then upgrade when you are trying to print something that hits your limits or there is something that is annoying you. Like it took a solid 6 months before i got annoyed with manual bed leveling. I even printed with TPU filament using the bowden tube but with the following 3d print modification https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3844646

Don't expect to print ABS or PETG without an enclosure to keep the ambient temp up

    • +3

PETG prints fine in the open

Even abs can be done with something to keep the drafts off it for smaller parts (but an enclosure for ABS is game changer)

I've been printing PETG with my V2 without an enclosure it works OK.

    • PETG does not need an enclosure for printing. Cooling PETG down before the second layer is actually a much higher priority for good quality prints

The only reason to consider one is the possible release of antimony compounds while printing, but I wasn't able to find concrete evidence that it's a concern for hobbyists

Creality has pretty bad quality control but if you manage to get a good one then it's a pretty good deal 😂

  • There are a few other versions I see listed. I am a noob and not sure what they mean. Will this be better: Link

    • It's the same model

    • Seems to be the same printer

  • Great printer and good deal. Mostly printing open with PETG and no problems.
Knobhead above claiming needs an enclosure to print PETG is full of it.

About $80 less than I paid for it.
