I always end up taking an Uber. For 1 person Uber is usually slightly more expensive, even with discount. For 2 people, Uber is much cheaper.

    • How much does an Uber cost to the CBD?

      • +1

        During surge pricing?

        • +2

Well if you can give both surge pricing and off peak pricing it would help provide some context for his comment. No idea how much they normally cost but just decided to go check myself in the Uber app right now and its ~$50 one way for an Uber from the airport (MEL) to Southern Cross station.

      • -2

Without surge pricing I usually pay $22 - $25. With surge pricing it's obviously higher.

When my colleagues and I go down we usually split the $22 2 of 3 ways. So works out much cheaper.

But I only head down there around 8 times per year, and never during peak events (AFL finals)

Edit… Wait. Never mind. I'm getting my cities mixed up. Sorry. I'm thinking of Hobart. Travel brain is fried. Sorry all.

        • yeah I was wondering it you were dreaming. $45 if you're lucky, and last time I arrived and had to shell out $100 to get to CBD

    • +10

I find it hard to believe an uber from spencer street station to the airport is even close to $20.

      • +3

I've found it cheaper in DIdi if there are 3 or more to South Yarra/Richmond. By the time we pay for Skybus + Myki it's definitely more and Didi is direct to door, without having to wait and swap modes of transport.
If you are travelling the Tulla side of the CBD it's definitely cheaper if there are 3 (perhaps 2 people in certain cases) of you in Didi.
I usually only use Skybus when travelling alone. Depends on where you live of course.
In saying this, I'll grab a return with this deal for when I'm travelling alone :)

        • I gotta ask…. what are you smoking?
You agree this is a deal then ramble on about irrelevant three or more passengers.

        • Travelled from airport - southern cross ( sky bus) =20
          Southern cross - Werribee = 4 myki
Bus from Werribee to home = myki

          For 2 people = 50 ( travelling time ~ 2 hours)

          Uber / didi = 60 ( travelling time ~1 hr)

          • @ChampofAus: The last 2 times I travelled to South Yarra in Didi from the Airport was $60.30 and $62.45 for the 3 of us direct to door with no waiting at Sourthern Cross for a train.

            Alternative, Skybus 3 x $20 + 3 x $4.60 (Myki) = $73.80

Really depends on where you live and how many of you there are, but there are plenty of times Didi is cheaper and faster, particularly off-peak when you don't need to wait for a train at SX.

  • Perfect! In town twice next month and was gonna buy my tickets soon

  • Thanks.
Been waiting for a one way deal. Got a couple of weeks left in hope of a 20%+ deal.

  • Are you allowed to drink coffee on board?

    • +1

Only if it's organic and you pinky swear not to spill it.

    • +1

sit up top, you'll be right

    • +2

On a boring serious note, the conditions state:

Consumption of food or drinks (except water in screw top containers) is not permitted on board our vehicles

So NO… unless you are sneaky.

    • Definitely not, I've actively been refused entry to the bus with one in hand.

      • 😲

        • +1

I mean they can certainly set the rules they want, but I was a little taken back and offended that I was paying $20 for a 15 minute ride on a school bus and couldn't even have a drink.

          • @wetsandwich:

            a 15 minute ride

Can be twice that during peak hour.

            • @jv: For sure. I only use it when I can't do the 901 route due to early/late flight times anyway.

  • Thank you OP!

  • +20

    True Ozbargainers take the 901.

    • +1

Done that once. Even driver gets changed 3 times by the time bus reaches frankston.

      • What a madlad, I always just suck it up and pay the zone 1 fare.

Otherwise, 901 from airport to Blackburn, then 703 down………. nah…..

      • +1

901 runs fully within Zone 2, the actual fare is $3.10 from Melbourne airport to Frankston

        • Applicable if you start your journey in Zone 2. The deal posted was giving directions from the CBD which is the equivalent to Skybus.

    • +1

I did that recently, had to pickup dad/his car.

It took me longer to catch the 901 bus (no trains due to trackwork) to the airport than it took him to fly from Perth to Melbourne.

      • Longer than 4hrs and 10min ?

      • +1

There are also less frequent bus services between Airport West and Tullamarine. Between Airport West and the city you also have the 59 tram which is slow but you can switch to a train at Essendon if they are running. Avoiding Broadmeadows is a bonus.

    • +1

Was gonna say, Myki is my coupon code for tullarmarine.
Train to Broadmeadows, bus from there to terminal.

    • Came here just to say this. Unless your flight is incredibly early or late, take the extra ~30mins to do it this way. 901 bus to/from Broadmeadows station, and metro train to/from the city.

Try not to get stabbed at Broadmeadows though, as the hospital emergency department fees may outweigh the rest of the bargain.

Do you get 10% off the vacuous preaching as well on every trip?

    • +1

      Please Explain

      • Are you a jv clone @BBF?

        • +4

Def NOT a clone clone clone…. bzzt. . I also hate nonsensical comments with no info.

My skybus trips have not had religious sermons or other woke nonsense, which is the new idiotic norm, these days.

          • -3

@BBF: Curious as to when you last caught a skybus?

I was on one earlier this month, needless to say a simple acknowledgement of country, wasn't strong enough to show their virtue

  • +5

    901

    • +1

      IYKYK

  • Cheaper than Klook, nice

  • Thanks OP!

  • +5

In the last few weeks we used www.getyourguide.com and the code "GET10" to get return Skybus Tix for $28.80. If you install the app you can also download the tix to your wallet. Appears it may only work once per getyourguide account sign in.

    • Yes, works out cheaper! Thanks

  • If only carry on, i end up just taking public transport from the airport to southern Cross.

    • I arrived back early March to realise that there is night track work on the Pakenham line. If I took the 901 I would definitely miss the last train, so I took the Skybus. The bottom luggage racks were all packed, so I left the luggage where the foldable seats are and sat next to it like what you do on normal buses/trains. The driver then came wanting me to lift my 25kg bag and put in the top level of the luggage rack. Yeah, screw that. He ended up putting it up there, but if they want to charge the premium, they better have the luggage space/service to accompany it.

  • +6

$28.90 return & $18.70 one way if you have NRMA Blue

    • Oof, I wish I knew this for the past couple of trips I've been on. Hopefully it's still around for my next one! Shame about the 3 month expiry.

      • +1

Don't all Skybus tickets expire in three months from issue?

        • I beleive it used to be six!

My next trip is just a bit too far away to take advantage, that's all. Hopefully the NRMA deal is still active by then.

        • Yes, 3 months apart from the 10 trip ticket which I believe is still 12.

    • Likewise. I didn't know about this either. Thank you for posting it. My first use of NRMA rewards.

  • Thanks op!

  • does placie still work on skybus in melbourne?anyone tried

    • Yes, but their app is a nightmare to use and doesn't allow all ticket types to be purchased. Good if you can figure out the app and have a promo.

  • +2

This is not a Deal, Skybus are crooks, making sure that the 901 service to broady isn't promoted or severely gimped. do yourself a favour and save plenty of $$$ and most importantly avoid this service if you can and take the 901 with a single trip myki fare. I get it this service may present a "reasonable value" proposition for some, but the only reason why they can charge extortionate fees and monopolise this service is due to their lobbying of the Australia Pacific Airports to give them exclusive access.

    • Sounds like you should neg the deal then. At least the 901 is reasonably frequent. Personally, I think they should have extended the tram line from Airport West rather than blowing money on the rail link which will probably have a hefty surcharge on it.

  • +3

Getting "Code is not valid" :(

  • Yeah looks like the code is dead, damn it =[

  • Not working

  • Unfortunately the code is not working

  • Worth checking the classifieds

  • Wow that sold out quickly better off buying via klook for points and cashback anyway.
