If you don't ask you don't get

    • +9

Can you share what car it was and what price you got? 21% seems unachievable in the current market, so I'd be interested to see what model is being marked down so much.

      • +17

Tesla model y. I got the same discount. Just tell them if you don't get 21% off you will go and buy an ioniq.

        • +3

Interestingly, that works out at almost exactly Tesla's current gross profit margin. So if they give you 21% off they're still not making a loss, they're just about breaking even on the sale.

          • -4

@GordonD: base model in the US costs like 30k USD, here its around 60k

Aus is getting the china made version now which is cheaper to ship due to distance and more frequent routes and cost to make is less, how much im not sure

            • +2

@WT: The cheapest Model Y available in the US is $55k USD/$82k AUD using the California zip code:

              https://www.tesla.com/modely/design#overview

You can't even buy the cheap $72k AUD RWD model there unlike here. Australia has always been one of the cheapest places in the world to buy a Tesla.

              • @Dogsrule:

The cheapest Model Y available in the US is $55k USD/$82k AUD

Don't you need to add tax on top of those figures?

                • @cute as duck: I think the displayed prices include tax if you put the ZIP code in.

        • +1

Really? I thought Tesla was like apple, no discounts?

      • +7

European cars. I got 18% off a BMW recently. Obv not mercedes with fixed pricing but euro luxury has massive amounts of fat in the price.

        • what bmw though? an X1 or X2?

        • I found, prices are almost same, with massive BMW discount vs Merc fix pricing. However BMW service plans are slightly cheaper.

        • +2

Most European cars, if you're not getting at least 18 - 21% discount you're being ripped off (I got 21% off an Audi)

          • +1

@suchan: arguably, at 21% you're still getting ripped off…but thats just degrees of ripped off ;)

        • +1

Yeap 20% should be the aim… was 23 during early COVID for a X3

    • -6

You cannot use a poll to acertain what discounts are being given on new car sales at the moment

Any given Discount depends on a number of factors:

      1. Dealer stock levels for the particular model required (if any)
      2. Salesmans incentive to close sales before end of month/year
      3. Old stock being cleared including demos (if any)
      4. Discounts and incentives being offered by other dealers (if any)
      5. Slow selling colours (if any)
      6. orders cancelled by customers

Hence it would be best if people stated how or why they managed to get any discount to put things into perspective

Oh look, it's the guy who hangs off top comment…

        • Bloody hell. I've never noticed that. Went through their reply history and faark me dead. How very odd.

          • +1

@Muzeeb: Yep, some ppl just want attention. Doesn't address the top comment, just wants to be there

            • @spackbace: Sometimes it's days later and just a copy cat response to further down the thread. Weird.

        • Woah. It's either someone who doesn't know how to use a forum, or someone who's really really weird.

          • @rumblytangara: Not all of us have the time to read all the comments.
            But I do 😆

don't you work at a toyota dealership? how is that fair on everyone else when you boast a better discount not achievable by anyone else?

      • +1

        Got another one on

  • +6

I don't settle for anything less than 25%… if they say no, I tell them I'm paying cash, that I am about to leave and I leave my details if they change their mind.

60% of the time…. it works every time…

    • +9

25% off? Could you please share what the last two cars were that you bought at 25% (or more) off the normal price? Year of manufacture, make, model, badge etc and the final price you paid. Also confirm what year you purchased these, please.

      • +36

it was a hot wheels match box car

      • +1

2015 Toyota Yaris, got 25% off. 2015 Mitsubishi Triton $47,000 down to $31 with ARB canopy.

Different climate at the moment it seems.

        • +12

          Those aren't new cars!

          • +1

@shulks: (You're right, but also, he might've bought them, when they were new).

            • @conza: I'm skeptical as he didn't mention the specific model - big difference in price

    • +1

Up to about 80~85%, it’s very fast, maybe 15 mins negotiating tops.

    • +11

Cash is not benefit for them.

      • +10

I would have thought this as well. They'd much prefer you purchase finance through them.

      • Missed the /s ?

@brendanm: I’m surprised that one of John Cadogan’s shills hasn’t already been in claiming that he can get new cars cheap…

              John Cadogan

              *Shudders*

              • @brendanm: Is he the shouty, smug dude on Youtube?

He sometimes has some good, sensible things to say but the above sentence puts me right off him. He comes across as a bit of a knob.

            • +6

@pegaxs: Got 12 % off a big blue waste truck recently, complete with fake logo on the side, but beef hooked if I can afford to run the bugger.
TLDR Ran out of diesel the other day in a car park. Upset the local pin stripe suited folk.
Sooo red faced,. I was channelling invisibility. (Hope it worked.)

            • @pegaxs: dood ;-)

    • -1

How would it be working every time if the success rate is only 60%?

      • +13

The breakdown is slightly complicated. Basically, it works 100% of the time, 60% of the time. It also works the other 40% of the time, with the caveat that you have to work about 60% harder

    • +1

Can't imagine anyone getting 25% on a brand new car. How big to people think their margins are?

      • Depends on the car. whether you believe it or not, I did

  • +15

How many times does this question get asked? There’s no discount on new cars. You get free mats, or a free tank of fuel, and that’s it.

    • +22

lets be honest, it hasnt been asked for 12 hours

    • You get free mats, or a free tank of fuel

And sometimes, if you're a good talker, you get both ;)

    • +1

      depends on the car,

negotiated a good discount on an MG ZST but we didn't purchase,

bought a kia seltos instead with no discount

    • -1

but according to all the posters here they're getting 20% off Tesla's, hahahahahahahaaha

    • +2

Absolutely not true and even during peak covid shortage. There are always dealer looking to shift cars to increase sale statistics and always deals to be had. Easiest way is to try a car broker and they get dealers to bid the lowest price/shortest wait time for your business.

      • +1

Got a cheaper deal ourselves than the best broker offer last time we bought a new car (2020)

        • +1

All depends on your luck. The brokers take a cut as well, but if you could find a dealer that needs a sale, 100% you can get a better price. The trouble is you'll need to invest a lot of time to find those dealers plus you won't know if another dealer can give you a better deal in that moment. Ive visited/called 5 dealers myself before going with a broker and non of the dealer was willing to give a much discount during peak covid, and my broker managed to get 8% off.

    • +1

My sister got mazda free servicing for 2 years(?) because she works for TAFE.

Maybe there are other benefits in other industries??

  • +2

I got them to round down to the nearest hundred once accessories were added.

    • So you probably saved $20 for something that costs in the thousands.

      • It was already on a good discounted price. Top spec model ‘on sale’ for about the same as the next model down.

  • +8

$136 off driveaway price with a bootliner and car mats thrown in for free.

  • Wow there's a lot of people in this thread who haven't bought a car in 10 years. Good luck getting 25% off the RRP of a new car today. Expect RRP with maybe a couple of floor mats 'added in'.

    • +9

      Whoosh??

    • +1

They just taking the piss mate

      • +5

        Please don't ruin our fun.

It's like fishing, but with really gullible fish.

  • +8

How long is a piece of string.

Anything with a waitlist - yeahnah
Anything without a waitlist - nahyeah.

Haval, chinese suppliers etc i hear are offering decent discounts as they're getting stacked up on docks.
    Everything else is highly variable.

    • +8

You’ll probably make it off the dock, and then it’ll break down

      • I'm sure they'd still be much more reliable than the old MG cars. Probably don't even leak oil from new.

        • They don’t leak oil but they are already rusty

        • Agreed, the Havals seem to be doing alright regarding reliability (better than MG).
Still 7 year unlimited km warranty is pretty good.

          • +2

@Drakesy: I always smile at the 7-year warranty…. doesn't it just mean you get to take the car in to get fixed for 7 years even if it breaks down every month?

            • +4

@Eeples: Better than 3/5 years like most euros
And then they still break down every month.

But honestly the ones saying ChInA CaR BaD may want to think twice, theyre doing better than many other brands

  • After being given price last year I mentioned my work had a corporate rate/partnership
Got $4500 off the price (about 7%)
I’d shifted employers since ordering and delivery but didn’t matter

  • 18% off MSRP new BMW…

    • +1

      Which bmw ?

  • +8

Got some hotwheels at 90% off

  • +3

Does negative discount count? There's been 3 price rises since.

  • +3

    FFS

    • +3

Hey, come on, it’s been a while week since the last time it was asked…

    • +2

Price error honored on AMG C65 plz

  • +4

oh good.. a new question… subscribing.

  • +1

Would entirely depend on car and availability..seems pointless getting a blanket number if you're looking at a high demand car compared to someone who got a significant discount on a readily available undesirable car.

Paid about 5% under RRP on a large Kia last week with pretty much 0 effort, which was less than the brokers price I had also obtained, which was just RRP.

But that was an instock/about to be in stock vehicle price, and I expect a discount on a wait list higher spec model would be different

And if I had walked next door to Toyota for example, the answer would be different (and the wait time significantly longer), making your survey kind of innacurate for any kind of 'baseline'.

    • lookin at sportages. interested to know model/price?

      • -1

        Wasn't a Sportage

  • +1

I couldn’t get the new car I wanted in the time frame I needed so ended up second hand.

  • -1

free, got a job with a car

    • I get approx $1000 per 28 days allowance for using my car for work and $3800 back from tax.

Thats potentially a new kia picanto every year after gst refund and they also have good resale value

  • +1

Name the dealership you got the > 5% discount at and what car, or it never happened.

    Nec' threads.
    Should we introduce;
    a brag tax?
    a 'bag' tax?

  • +2
  • Good lord this question asked again

  • +1

Mazda CX-5 purchased middle of last year. Pretty much zero discount on price but most of the accessories thrown in. Think it was maybe about a grand off plus tank of fuel. Most wait list manufacturers will give you nothing. They have no need to discount. We waited one week last year before placing order and our estimated delivery went from about 1.5 months to 3-4 months. Plenty of demand.

    • Got the same but I think you got ripped off

got discount and also accessories thrown in too

  • +1

$1300 off a Suzuki Swift GL Plus, May 2021, free premium paint $595, free mats, fuel, over $2k discount.
Couldn't get one locally of any colour, were hard to find anywhere especially metallic silver, bought from a Central Coast Dealer who had one on the way no one had claimed.

  • +1

if you are looking for a car with a waiting time for the next 12 months then forget the discount. But for the cars with plenty in stock like MG or KIA or Hyundai then the dealer may throw in some freebies but not more than $ 150 to $ 300.

Kindly note that genuine car mats doesn't cost $ 20 but they cost more than $ 250.

  • +2

I bought a mazda cx5 2022 in Aug 22 and managed to negotiate on the trade in car. Dealer quoted $4980, managed to negotiate to $10,000.

So I'd say scored between 5 and 10% discount on the actual brand new car cost. I was pretty sure cost of my trade in shouldn't have been more than 5k in the normal market conditions, but at the time market wasn't really normal for used cars and it allowed to inflate to almost double
