As you suggested good quality second hand cars were unicorns and also appreciated in value because of black swan events.

I bought and flipped two good quality cars during COVID and lost only about 2k each time, putting over 50k on both, no replacement of tyres either.

Discount? You aren’t even trying. Last car I got the salesman paid me to take it.

    • +5

      Was it a Jeep?

  • +3

Unless the car is sitting on the floor and not moving, you won't get a discount.

Thanks to shortages and high demand, dealers have moved to made to order systems. And if you don't like the sticker price, someone else will, so you might get little to no discounts or add ons.

Depending on the car you might get discounts through a broker. Check with some of them and see what they can do for you

2023 new Mitsubishi Outlander LS AWD for the price of the 2WD and free floor mats. ~$2700 saving or just over 5%.

  • We bought a volume of cars for work and saved 5k off RRP (50 hrybid camrys) the deal was poor value considering how much we purchased.

A lot of unmet demand for new cars and I am surprised how much hatches go for now…

  • supply and demand.

in 2020 tried to buy a ute asked for 5 pct off, woulndt budge. his reasoning theres only two left and in two weeks time he will find another buyer willing to pay as advertised. it got sold after few days.

We were looking at the Hyundai Tucson early this year, not looking to buy that day. we just wanted to test drive it.

We basically got offered $4k off the $56,000 model without us even asking about purchasing it.

We took that as a starting point for getting a deal in the future, as we are now thinking of waiting for the Hybrid Tuscon to come out.

Id be at least looking to get 10% off a brand new car personally.

I am waiting on delivery of a mazda 3. I got just over 7% off RRP, free floor mats and a full tank of fuel using a broker.

I did not have the time or energy to negotiate myself so was really happy with the result.

    • Mazda is one of the few companies that have decent stock levels (even had a Drive article about it around Christmas).

      No stock=no discount

    • hey mate, mind sharing the broker details?
      Can't send you DMs'.

      Cheers mate

It entirely depends on the car and demand. With popular SUVs or small cars don't expect big discounts (if any), but if you are looking for a large or mid-size luxury car then I guess you still can. Because I got ~25% off on a new A6 recently (not a demo), and I was also offered a similar discount on a BMW 5 series demo. But none of the dealers offered any discounts on new build-to-orders. Guess not many people are buying non-performance based mid-size ICE luxury cars these days.

    • +1

because it was already 25% overpriced

      • +2

I suppose you could say all European luxury cars are overpriced. But then again, they have always been like that. Anyhow the fact of the matter is that you can still get significant discounts off the RRP with some cars.

        • Oh easy

I get fleet discounts off all cars

All these walk in plebs don't qualify

          • @Poor Ass: I’ve gotten considerable fleet discounts on my previous cars when I novated them pre-covid, but with the last car neither Audi nor BMW were offering worthwhile fleet discounts. From what I recall Audi said they have stopped fleet discounts altogether. When did you last buy a car with a considerable fleet discount ? I don’t think dealers are all that interested selling to fleet customers anymore. Everything has changed post-covid.

            • +1

              @opt: Last month a Mazda

              $51k RRP got for $42k

Maybe you are right with European cars dealers don't care. Merc and Honda all fixed price.

              BMW, Toyota do a little

Kia and Mitsi does a lot

Fleet dealers sell in volume and it doesn't mean you need to buy in bulk

I'm lucky to work in the industry so I can price it out but you are right post covid the discounts have dropped significantly

              • @Poor Ass:

Fleet dealers sell in volume and it doesn't mean you need to buy in bulk

When there are more than enough retail customers who are willing to pay full price, there is no incentive for manufacturers to offer volume discounts to fleet buyers. An article from the U.K : link

              • @Poor Ass: I bet you got a 2022 manufactured vehicle - hence the larger discount.

              • @Poor Ass: Is this a demo? Which model?

                • @TightAl: Cx-5 Akera 2.5 non turbo

Don't get it they are fuel guzzlers and have bad take off

                  • @Poor Ass: But it will last forever

                    • @gguu: they might not have the best features and fuel efficiency but I can agree with you on mechanical reliability

    • If it was recently and an Audi A6, then would I be correct in assuming it was a 2022 manufacture date?

  • +2

Everyone mentions the free tank like it's a bonus, but has this ever not been the norm? Do dealers ever push you out with just enough fuel in the tank to get to a servo? Or do they expect you to bring a jerry can on delivery date.

    • +1

it was the norm but some dealers don't do it anymore because they don't have to and they don't care how they look anymore because it's a sellers market if you don't buy it someone else will

but they do have at least have quarter in the tank

      • I wonder when EV dealers will give it to you on 20% charge :p

        • lol drive out of the lot then run out of juice

    • +1

Toyota gives free tank of petrol by default now

My info is outdated. In April 2021, I got a $400 discount on a new vehicle ($35,900 rrp), which had a 6 month waiting time. I had to go through the head manager, and I believe telling them that I would be getting my car serviced at their dealership was what ended up getting me the discount. Got the accessories and the full tank of fuel as well.

    • How much was the dealer delivery?

      • No dealer delivery. The RRP included all on road costs.

        • +1

          It's on the invoice

The new Kia car I purchased. Not even a small discount or free upgrade. They flat out refused. Thanks to what Covid did to car market. The saleswoman was more beautiful than car, would have taken her instead of car if had choice.

    • It happens if ya walk in nobody in this climate

Was able to get a Mazda CX8 2023 model for 6k off rrp

    • Is it in Vic and which model?

        • Thanks for the info

        • did you have to wait?

          • @Archi: Ordered in October, picked up in first week december

          • @Archi: If you are wanting the details of where i negotiated the deal, feel free to DM me

When I was buying my 2020 camry, someone suggested a company that bulk buys cars for fleet purchase and recommended a company.

I sent them an email and they quoted 32,600 for a new hybrid Camry SL sport (the midrange one).

I accepted and later found out toyota honoured the quote even though that was the price for a petrol not the hybrid (the hybrid was another 2k more).
    So pretty chuffed.

The same model/year used goes for a similiar price now.

    • +1

Toyotas at the moment are overpriced and not talking about retail price but they've jacked the price up significantly

E.g. Rav 4 base model up $7k increase from last year

      • They are so ridiculously expensive. Car in general are though, will not be buying a new car (or used ) anytime soon. Not with a 3 year old camry in good condition

        • +1

you bought at a good time to be honest

that was before when anyone knew about the extent of these shortages and price jack

  • +1

I asked if they could show me an invoice for once they have recently sold. It was about 5k off with a bunch of extras. I said if you can do me that deal i will place a deposit today.
    Try your luck

I got a 2019 i30 n-line (manual) brand new in 2019 for $24,500 (RRP 30k) the loan on it just ended and I went to see how much it was worth on the used car market with 40,000km. More than what I paid new? I then checked on the new car price now (basically 99% the same car) $35,000 with no nego. Its really not a 35k IMO crazy how much the market has changed.

    • Are you sure about those numbers?

Sorry Just noticed its on the WOVR

Still impressive for a car to maintain its value like that.

      • Yea, that ones a bit of a botch job too. The headlights are from an older generation.

  • I've usually managed about 20%. It just depends how desperate you are to buy the car, and how desperate the dealer is to sell it.

  • I can't believe there are still people who are happy with "free floor mats" when they could have saved 10k on the car if they actually tried. Lol.

    • Floor mats are better than a cap, keyring and water bottle :)

Well done OP for creating a post like this. I wasn't able to find a recent, relevant discussion when figuring out how much discount to expect for the waitlisted Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid I purchased earlier this month.

I called 8 dealers asking for a "crazy" 10% off on the first one, man that guy got aggressive. Ended up settling on a very helpful and polite dealer that could do 5% off RRP and free floor mats, black plates and tank of fuel.

I wasn't game enough to try negotiating for the Kia and Toyota alternatives…

  • You will get more discount buying used car.

  • Honda CR-V purchased this month. No discount, no freebies. Had to buy mats separately!

Bought Skoda Kamiq May 2022, it was discounted, purchased via novated lease agent.

    • Would have expected Honda to discount considering no one buys them these days

      • They explained to me they give 0 discounts under their fixed-price model since 2021. The sales person compared their model to Apple and Merc.

        • Except Apple does discounts e.g. 10% off Macs

          • @kerfuffle: Yeah I think they mean they will do public discounts and offers, but dealers won't give any 'under the table' discounts to anyone, i.e. no room for negotiations.

          • @kerfuffle: Just purchased an iPad 10th generation with 256gb.With it I purchased an Apple keyboard @ $399.I did receive a discount of $100 on the iPad($999 originally) I always thought Apple products were a fixed price item, maybe because I purchased the keyboard as well.

  • Go in the last Sunday of the month

Have a peek at the sales board in the bosses office and find the person with the lowest sales that month - usually the freshie, desperate to make a sale

That's the person you want to negotiate with…if anyone will do whatever it takes to greenlight the lowest possible price, it'll be him

  • something like 5-7%

  • Using a car broker can get you at least a 5% discount. However, expect a longer wait time.
