These are great sounding IEMs, considered by many to be the best value you can get, if you don't find the triple flange eartips uncomfortable.
If you need sound isolation these are all you ever need, they are essentially earplugs with headphones attached.

The plugs are too long, I was scared and almost did not fit my ears, foam tips are ok but I like round silicon tips.

With these type of IEMs, 100% you're inviting an ear infection if you wear them for too long.

      Citation needed.

Used this style of IEM for many years without this happening.

    • +3

Been wearing Etymotic IEMs and earplugs for about 15 years and have never had any issues. Like with anything you stick in your ears (or any orifice) clean them regularly and you'll be fine.

Also my audiologist says its fine, so I trust them.

That being said, yes many may find the deep insert tips to be uncomfortable

How did you manage to clean them while plugged in for 15 years

With these type of IEMs, 100% you're inviting an ear infection if you wear them for too long.

You’re susceptible to ear infections with all types of in-ears, including less deep ones like AirPods Pro, if you don’t sanitise the tips and/or replace them when needed.

Hard to continue to recommend unless you need the fitment type or want the tuning. These days you've got IEMs like the Truthear Hexa at the same price, cheaper on sale.

    • +1

There are definitely a lot of chi-fi options now days and the Hexa is the current flavor of the month, but I would put more faith in Etymotics build quality and quality control. I've had a pair of HF5s for about 12 years that are still going strong. That and the isolation still make it a recommended for me.

      • +1

True enough, but the Hexa wins out on tuning, staging, imaging and separation. Some of them are marginal or somewhat based on preference, but overall it's better sound quality.

You do get more accessories here though!

      • There's little reason to put more faith in Etymotic's build quality given practically every Shenzhen special that gains popularity has comprehensive teardowns interrogating their construction—here's one for the Hexa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I5G3qzajRI
Quality control is another thing, but we're afforded great protections here so it's rarely a big issue with the typical paradigms of failure and our ability to make change of mind returns for things like channel matching. The ER2XR is a much more iffy recommendation purely based on the NSFW fitment.

    • Yes to the fitment type and tuning.

In my case, IEMs that are designed with the cable straight down (not around the ear) always fit better for me, especially on the occasions when I’m wearing glasses. There’s something about the angle of insertion that I need to achieve to get a proper seal. I must have weird ears.

  • I heard things I'd never heard before on some of my favorite tracks with a pair of The ER2s I borrowed from a friend.

That said, extremely clinical sounding. the XR should be better in that regard.

and yeah, just when you think they are in far enough, they need to go in further. not suitable for everyone, but I wear etymotics ER20XS earplugs several times a week for band prac so Im used to it.

  • +2

I got a pair from a previous deal and they have been great. Very effective passive noise cancellation and I can hear things I've never heard before in certain songs.
Takes a while to get used to the deep insertion fitting though ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • is the iPhone Adapter their own or off the shelf and is it sold by itself?

strange that Etymotic Research would make their own but not sell it for their other earphones that didn't have one

    • -1

The iphone adapter most likely only fits these earbuds.
Not sure how come you didn't know that it's pretty common practice these days, they design it that way so you specifically can't buy it to use with other products.

      • +1

What? It's just a 3.5mm to lighting cable. You can use it with any headphones that have a 3.5mm connector. Just like any other dongle DAC.

        • Sorry I read Shenannigoat's comment below as well, who confirms it is a lightning to 3.5mm adapter.
From the deal picture I thought the lightning plug all the way to the black part of the headphones was one single piece. (I was looking at it on my phone, and there is a greyish bar covering the bottom of the image which blocked it)
I thought it was this. https://www.etymotic.com/product/mmcx-to-lightning-audio-cab…

And they don't have any other lightning products when I searched: https://www.etymotic.com/?s=lightning&post_type=product&dgwt…

Anyhow how much is the Etymotic adapter on it's own??

You could walk into an Apple store and get one which measures transparent and does just fine for $7 I think. They also have a USB-C to 3.5mm version if you need it.

          • +1

@harshbdmmaster718: Pretty sure it's not branded and I don't think they sell it on its own. I doubt they actually make it. The Apple dongle is $15 and I would assume this is about on par with that. It's just a bonus freebie.

            • @ValadTheImpala: Ok. Weird I remember the Apple dongle either being free for Apple customers or $7.

Maybe I misremembered it as "Free for limited time" then they started to charge $7 for it. But in reality it was $7 to start with for a limited time (a year I think), then became $14?

Anyway luedriver seemed to be keen on getting just the adapter, which it looks like is not possible without buying the earbuds so might as well go to Apple and pay $14.

    • The one I got with my set last year looks practically identical to Apple's adaptor except it's black. It's a standard 3.5mm jack on the other end so I don't see why it wouldn't work with other headphones. Having said that, I've never actually given it a go.

    • is the iPhone Adapter their own or off the shelf and is it sold by itself?

You can just get this one from Apple without needing to buy the headphones.

I know I mentioned Apple store, but it's available at Officeworks and Amazon (if you have Prime for Free delivery) at the same price if that's more convenient.

      • I already know and have it, just curious about other known brands when I see them making a lighting adapter for apple

        • +1

Ok. Just to let you know apparently many "lightning" products in the past made by other companies often start having issues with compatibility are a few updates. I don't have an iPhone but I do have an iPad and I would only really depend on the official one to continue working forever with Apple products.

  • +1

I went from ER4-P to ER2XR and didn't really like the sound so sold those and with ER4XR on sale. They were definitely worth the extra money for me.

    • I got some ER3XR for roughly this price a few years back, after having HF5. Love them both.

    • I'm mad that I missed it. The ER4 should be more likely to be worth losing wireless and multipoint compared to the ER2.

  • Do you reckon these would these be good for travel? considering getting a pair for an upcoming trip with alot of flight travel involved.

    • +1

I haven't used them in a plane but I think they are great on the train (or mowing or drumming or playing live gigs). Personally I prefer passive noise isolation (earplugs) to active noise cancellation (airpods) so I would go for the Etymotics compared to something like Bose QuietComforts, but I'm likely the minority here.

But if you want great sounding earplugs, these are some of the best. They are small and don't have any of the drawbacks of ANC (needs batteries, doesn't work as well on high frequencies/inconsistent sounds, 'eardrum suck', etc)
