I saw the product names before the URL and thought it was an entirely different kind of product…

  • Any bargains?

These are pretty cheap on Aliexpress & you don't have to spend $40 + $6.95 delivery on items that aren't bargains in order to get one.

      US$2.01 + $1.41 del + GST

      • Hi WatchNerd

These are not equivalent products - we are a small business specialising in Australian-made / Australian-designed products (you can find out more on our "About us" page).

We are all about supporting the local economy, so we specifically avoid stocking items that come from sources where there may be questionable regulations and oversight on manufacturing.

It is similar to the difference between buying legitimate mechanical watches made by manufacturers who use Miyota or ETA movements and buying the cheapest possible model from a knock-off manufacturer that uses no-name quartz movements with poor tolerances.

          These are not equivalent products

Yes, they are… do they serve the same function? are the of a similar size and construction?

we are a small business specialising in Australian-made

Yeah, nah, 100% you just bulk ship "made in China" from Alibaba like everyone else does

          Australian-designed products

Like this means nothing… Why not "German designed". Designing is the easy and cheap part. It's a marketing catch call to think you are investing in Australia and Australian jobs… nope.

It is similar to the difference between

A precision instrument like a watch is no where near the same level as a dog bowl. I am pretty sure that dogs dont give a shit about micro-millimeter variations in their bowl or toys…

"I tell you Rex, something is just off about this tennis ball.. it's like… its just a fraction too…. big?"

I can appreciate that this is what most brands our doing, this is specifically why BARKBARK was started. Our currently stocked products are primarily sourced from Goulburn, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney - you can find more info about this on our website if you have a look around and investigate where each of our suppliers are based, as well as our "About us" page.

We are not on Deutschbargain :)

think you are investing in Australia and Australian jobs… nope

LickiMat is a Sydney-based company founded by Australian veterinarians which employs over 20 people - I certainly think that purchasing their products constitutes supporting Australian jobs.

am pretty sure that dogs dont give a **** about micro-millimeter variations

I am an electrical engineer by day, and I can tell you that the quartz crystal oscillator ICs placed into sweatshop watches can keep the time about as well as any other quartz movement.

Buyers are not always chasing the lowest price, lowest quality build on every product - other things they take into consider is who they're supporting with their purchase, the level of greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain (always lower with domestic companies), and the likelihood of whether an item has had corners cut when producing it, the material it's made of, and even whether it's been contaminated with heavy metals or other chemicals.

It's a dog food mat… Not a complex engineering masterpiece. You cant compare a plastic dog bowl to a watch, no matter how shitty the watch is.

the level of greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain (always lower with domestic companies)

And you are kidding yourself if you think domestic companies have lower greenhouse gas emissions. Australia has some of the worst emission on the planet. Last time I looked, we were being beaten by a lot of cleaner third world countries.

the likelihood of whether an item has had corners cut when producing it

And corners cut?? It's a plastic mat for dogs to eat off… It's not a kidney dialysis machine. This is just pure marketing bullshit.

@arkeigh: Except Lickimat products are made in China and it even says so on the back of the packaging…

              • @antwill: Hi Antwill

Yes, LickiMats are manufactured in China to Australian specifications. Our policy on sourcing overseas items is outlined on our "About us" page - we have no illusions about that.

We stock LickiMat because the company is Australian-owned and the products are Australian-designed, even if they are made elsewhere.

In this particular instance, buyers will be interested in the Australian specifications - non-toxic TPR is being used rather than TPE or silicone (both cheaper materials), which are both far more environmentally harmful. Lower emissions in shipping in this case wouldn't be an advantage of course, because it still has to be shipped here from overseas.

                • +3

@arkeigh: So how are they reducing greenhouse gas emissions if they still ship from China, to you, to the buyer instead of cutting out the middleman?

                  • @antwill: Hi Antwill

The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in this case is from the manufacturing process itself, using TPR rather than TPE or silicone. You can find out more here:
                    https://lickimat.com/pages/eco-credentials

As you said, shipping it from China is still a serious source of greenhouse gas emissions - but there are unfortunately no Australian-manufactured products like this in the market.

Dogs are going to chew through those cheapo ones. They'll melt if you wash them in hot water.

        • +2

They are literally made of the same material, or, if not, they are made out of silicone… You know, the same silicone certain bake and ovenware is made out of…

The temperature range of TPR is -40 to 120 degrees. (Used in Likimat brand)
Silicone's temp range is from about -70 to about 340 degrees. (Used in Aliexpress brands)

So, please, tell me again how the silicone ones will "melt if you wash them in hot water…"
