Best Bang for Buck Wi-Fi Mesh for TP-Link VX420-G2H Router

My friend has just been shipped the TP-Link VX420-G2H wifi router from iiNet as part of his new internet service. He has an old, long, narrow single fronted, double brick house in the inner city, no structured cabling (and can't put any in) and of course the NBN is presented at the very front of the house so thats where the wifi router lives. Previously it's taken 2 additional 5Ghz range extenders (2Ghz spectrum is swamped) to get coverage to the very back room but they weren't mesh wifi so optimal signal strengh was a pain when moving about.

I'm not familiar with TP-Link but I see the VX420 supports some form of meshing called "OneMesh". I'm wondering if I can use the VX420 built in wifi to cover the front 2 rooms, then a mesh access point that will play nicely with the VX420 for mid way in the house, and finally one more AP near the end of the house so they can get full coverage. They aren't flushed with cash so I'm trying to make this reliable but not spend the earth on the solution. Anyone got any tips on which product might suit?

  • I would go with a pair of TP-Link Deco instead of TP-Link OneMesh. Do they have FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC, FW? How much do they want to spend?

    • FTTP.

I've also suggested ditching iiNet and perhaps doing ABB and opt in for the additional mesh AP's they offer. What do you think?

      • Plug in a TP-Link Deco to the nbn NTD and spread out the other TP-Link Deco's. TP-Link Deco E4, Deco M4, Deco M5 and Deco X20 are reasonably priced. Note that the Deco E4 has 100Mbps ports and the other Deco's have Gigabit ports. NetComm is overpriced.

  • Lot of reccomendations for TP Link Deco but after owning a set I hate it.

No web configuration, you are forced to use their app. App doesnt work very well when your internet is down though. Also settings in the app are limited, its really dumbed down.

Lucky for me, one of the three APs died in warranty just a few days ago so I will be returning it. Bought myself an ASUS router, may get another down the line as they have the ability to mesh. And they have a good old web configuration hooray!

  • I also have a tplink VX420 and would like to know which solution you decided upon and if you were happy with the result. Thanks in advance

  • Would they consider a power line Ethernet adapter to get a network point somewhere in the middle of the house?

    • Which WiFi 6 power line ethernet adapter do you recommend?

      • Sorry I haven’t used any of them but I only know they exist for edge cases like this.

  • It's not on the OneMesh device list https://www.tp-link.com/au/onemesh/product-list/

    • Went for a Deco setup in the end. Does the job.
