Book Depository Closing Down 26 April 2023

Source

While I don't buy from them as much as I used to when I first came across them in 2008, mainly due to their prices not being as competitive any more, still sad to see them go. Used to get my Moleskine diaries, manga and uni texts from them before Amazon became a thing here and they had decent customer service if anything went awry.

Do you still use Book Depository?

  • Yeah I stopped around 2012, back then they were by far the cheapest.

I guess they must have got killed off by amazon.

They are owned by Amazon. I mostly use to use VPN until 90% of my VPN orders started getting cancelled.

      • Oh whatttt since when damnn

      • +1

How good was that VPN trick haha

        • +1

Too good. But it depended heavily on the publisher that published the book you bought. Books published in the UK were were overall cheaper than those published in the US.

      • not sure what you mean…

        • For example, before they started cancelling VPN orders I use to get Oxford World Classics editions for around 6-15 dollars. New york review books Classics rarely go under 15 dollars.

Been using them to get manga whenever there's a 50% cashback deal

I assume Amazon has intended to do this since they bought them a decade ago

  • Now Amazon can stop procuring those pesky and cheap book mailers for BD, such a waste of resources when we have expensive envelopes, lol.

  • +1

Oh no! :-(( I still buy a few books every year from them.

Where am I going to get my free bookmarks now?

    • +1

      Don't you re-use them?
I've been using the same one for about 10 years (it is a receipt for a book purchase).

      • bookmarks are single use only…

      • I keep it in the book for the next reading

Aw makes me a little sad. When I was a poor uni student I used to jump on here to get my textbooks for way cheaper then they sold them on campus.

Same here! Especially the chunky tomes like the Norton Anthology of English Literature vol. 2

    • +2

Same! I feel a little sad about it too.

Used quite a lot 10+ years ago but haven't really shopped from them since Amazon took over. A bit sad as it was one of few places to source obscure books with free international shipping.

  • nostalgia, had some great prices over 10yrs ago, agree with sentiments above!

  • Sad news. Agree with a lot of the above comments: after Amazon bought them they became less competitive and I stopped ordering there as frequently.

I'd like to hear any good non-Amazon recommendations? Blackwells (UK) offer free shipping to Aus. Prices are usually simiilar to Amazon (I mostly buy signed first editions from Blackwells, and majority of everything else via Amazon).

    https://booko.com.au/

My first port of call when looking for a book

    • +1

Agree. This is gold, especially when seeking specific editions.

  • Time to delete all my Book Depository affiliate links I guess. It only paid 5% and they only sold books, would rather direct people to Amazon tbh where they might buy some bigger ticket items after. I had someone buy a luxury watch after clicking a link to a book once, oh happy days…

Damn going to miss the 50% cash back offers

Sad news, used to buy a few from them too, some during university, then a few after I graduated. Sent them internationally too as gifts to friends.

  • Haven’t used them in a while unless there’s a 50% offer.

I mostly get mine from booktopia, shipping is so much faster and prices are better (when you get free shipping)

    • How do you get the free shipping? I would use them more but the shipping price is what holds me back unless I have a number of books to get.

      • ozb has posted a few codes as deals, but they have books you can add to your order for free shipping, and often they cost the same as the shipping so i dont mind getting them

        • ah Ok thanks for this. I will keep an eye out for this while its still possible!

Classic amazon buying out their competitors and letting them rot…

  • I use to use them a lot - 5/6 orders per annum but haven't used since mid-2021. My last order was one they could not fulfill and they refunded me but I still got the $10 cashback!

  • +1

yeah I used to use them a lot back in the day, occasionally order from them still. sad to see them go - will miss the bookmarks

  • Yeah, used to use them a lot, but not so much in recent times. https://booko.com.au/...good shout. Forgot about their service

I used them for all of my kids' English texts throughout high school. Saved us so much money. I've also bought entire back catalogues of my favourite authors, and used it to send gifts directly to family in the UK. I was so disappointed when I got the message yesterday. And most of the books on my wishlist are sold out!

  • Who knew they had a 'fulfilment' centre in Melbourne !??

  • Surprised no one has mentioned this yet:

They had the cheapest board games!
